Awed by the caliber of those who serve our country

During my youth, my father always spoke in reverent terms about the men and women who served our country during World War II. Dad didn’t serve due to a family deferral, but his brother piloted C-47 supply aircraft across the Burma Hump.

Due in part to my father, my uncle and many of the Hollywood movies made about that war, I always held those veterans, and the men and women who followed them with service during the Korean War, in high esteem.

The idea of taking several years from their lifetimes to serve our country struck me as an act of bravery and a commitment to a country that remains unique in its abundance and freedoms.
