Texas Purple Heart Veteran With No Benefits
Former Army SPC Patrick Joseph Feges, an Eagle Scout from Sugarland, Texas, was born November 2, 1984. He entered the Army after high school, trained to serve as a cook, and was sent to a base in South Korea as a member of the 2-17 Field Artillery Unit. It wasn’t long before his brigade was deployed to fight in Iraq.
He was awarded a Purple Heart after being severely wounded at the Marine Base Camp in AR Ramadi on November 1, 2004. Barely alive after being hit by mortar fire in the legs and abdomen, he was flown to Baghdad, then to a hospital in Germany, and on to Walter Reed Army Medical Center on November 6, where he stayed for two weeks before being sent to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for rehabilitation.
He was given leave to recover, then medically discharged in August, 2005, and classified by the Army as 20% disabled. A month or so later he was evaluated by the Veterans Administration, which informed him, unofficially, that he qualified for a 60% disability benefit. Since that time he has received no official determination and absolutely NO benefits from the VA—not one thin dime. He has received neither disability benefits nor education benefits.
The VA is dragging their feet, telling Patrick, among other things, that they lost his records and that he needs to be re-tested. For over a year and a half they have sent Patrick letter after stating that they are working on his case, yet nothing happens…
In the mean time his mother, a single mom who lives in Sugarland raising her five children, is working two jobs to help pay his bills and college expenses (he is attending college in Austin).
Patrick’s family needs help. Support for our troops should not end the day they are so honorably discharged. Please lend your voice to the cause of justice for this fine young man.
