A New "Greatest Generation" Enjoys Our "Convenient" War

Sanchez-War-Iraq-JusticeAmericans at Home Live in Peacetime Abundance While A War Almost None Understand

Goes on Forever and Ever……………..

By G. Duff

Any time congress asks to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home, we hear cries of treason and betrayal.  Do the troops want to come home or are they all happy, properous and well taken care of while handing out cookies at orphanages and converting Iraqis to Christianity like the Army and Whitehouse disinformation services tell us?

Are parents around America getting letters from thousands of kids begging to stay in Iraq just 5 or 10 more years until the Shiites and Sunni's love each other and the Kurds have developed amnesia?  Perhaps we should keep them there until the elected government of Iraq is in real control of the country and no longer filled with criminals and puppets.

Lt General Sanchez, our recent commander in Iraq, now retired and free to speak publicly has called the Iraq war a "nightmare" and Bush Administration planning "incompetent".  Sanchez and an endless stream of military leaders forced out of service for failing to blindly have repeatedly called for Rumsfelds resignation (and Rummy finally left) and for the US to admit that there is no possible role for the US military in Iraq.

Imagine a war where our troops have to fight against one side on one day and against another side on another day.  Imagine fighting a war where the civilian population is half enemy combatant yet they are all legally armed with assault weapons and have automobiles with almost free gasoline.

Imagine a country that had no Al Quaeda presence but now has thousands of Al Queda fighters being armed by Iran and Syria (read Russia and Bush's buddy Putin) and more coming in from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Algeria, Morocco etc etc every day.  We are now running the most successful worldwide recruiting program for terrorists imaginable.  Where there was no terrorist infrastructure, we suddenly have training camps in a dozen countries.  This is how we fight and win the war on terror.

Are our troops telling us that they want to stay in Iraq until there are no longer Al Quaeda camps in Pakistan?  Are our troops prepared to fight in Iraq until the war we are losing BECAUSE THEY ARE IN IRAQ AND NOT AFGHANISTAN is won?

If the majority of our troops have asked for this, then supporting the troops means supporting Bush policies that will keep them in Iraq forever.  Has anyone really asked the troops what they want or are others, perhaps others with NO personal military experience telling us?

Bush is now comparing Iraq to Vietnam, and I believe rightly so.  When I left Vietnam in 1970, there were many areas in Vietnam that were largely pacified.  The enemy had withdrawn most of their troops and combat was at a moderate level with the daily and continual murder of American soldiers just enough to keep us "engaged".

Of course, in 1968, while a presidential candidate, Richard Nixon announced he had a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam, much as Ike had for ending the war in Korea which is technically still going on over half a century later.  Nixon and Kissinger meant, of course, a compromise with the communists that would get him elected, letting our troops get out and then allowing a communist takeover 5 minutes later.  This is what we knew and this is what happened.

Using the Bush analogy of Vietnam, we are safe to leave Iraq as soon as it becomes an island surrounded by the American Navy.  Anything less than this would leave Iraq open to domination by Iran or a civil war and partial domination by Iran.  It will always be the same story, Iran will win, Iran will have nuclear weapons, Iran will be protected by Russia and we will be flanked in the middle east for 50 years with a new cold war.

Perhaps this was the entire reason for the debacle in the first place?  Did we need a new enemy?  From the look of our utter failure in building infrastructure in Iraq though key corporations in the US are making billions in the 600 dollar screwdriver and toilet seat industry we are so familiar with, it seems like the defense industry has bought itself a permanent war.

How is Iran becoming so powerful?  American oil companies are making record profits while oil prices move toward 90 dollars a barrel.  Russia is certainly a part of it, supplying Iran with their best weapons and building a huge uranium enriching facility protected by Russian military technicians.  Did you also know that Haliburton Corporation, formerly of Houston, Tx, is in Iran building up their oil industry so they can sell oil to China for US dollars which go to Russia to buy weapons to kill American soldiers?

If you look at things like this, you might even want to take a second look at 9/11.  Only Americans believe that the US government was did not take part in the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

CURRENTLY, MORE AMERICANS BELIEVE THAT THE US GOVERNMENT HELPED PLAN 9/11 THAN SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT.

THE ZOGBY POLL HELD IN AUGUST 2007 INDICATED THAT:

51% OF AMERICANS WANT CONGRESS TO QUESTION BUSH AND CHENEY ABOUT THEIR ROLE IN 9/11 AND

32% OF AMERICANS DEMAND IMMEDIATE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY

67% OF AMERICANS DEMAND REEXAMINATION OF 9/11 COMMISSION FINDINGS AND BELIEVE THERE IS A COVERUP.

With a war based on initial terrorist attacks that more Americans believe may have been planned by members of our own government than currently support our military involvement in Iraq, is it really far fetched to question our current executive branch about genuinely failed policies?  Do we also want to mention the government's fantasy involving weapons of mass destruction?

With trillions in debt piling up and taxes for the rich staying at rock bottom levels why we borrow our way into debt for a century to the Communist Chinese, isn't it time we began to suspect that, quite possibly, our government seems to have an "internationalist" agenda that does not involve the survival of the US as a free nation?

Our troops, most of them at least, are always ready to do what we ask of them.  What those of us who know war from close up also know is that we have now asked too much of our troops.  They are serving because they are good and decent, not because they are unemployed and stupid.  This war and how it has been handled has shown us beyond question that our current administration sees the military as something to play games with.

Our troops generally trust us and are taught to trust their leaders. That we lie to them and coerce them to get their support is a disrespect that we will pay for in decades.  Every military expert of repute in this country says our military is being destroyed by this war.  Do we save Iraq from itself even if we have to kill everyone there, and destroy ourselves in the process?
