VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND SEEKS EDUCATORS TO JOIN TEACHERS NETWORK

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND SEEKS EDUCATORS TO JOIN TEACHERS NETWORK
Application Deadline to Join the “Class of 2009” is March 27

Washington, D.C.—The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is seeking educators to join its Teach Vietnam Teachers Network Class of 2009, said Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the organization. The deadline for educators to apply to the Network is March 27, 2009.

“This will be the seventh year since we inaugurated this important educational program,” said Scruggs. “Since then, teachers in the Network have been learning from each other and from nationally known experts and have brought new creativity and enthusiasm back to their classrooms when they teach this important era in our nation’s history.”

The Teach Vietnam Teachers Network is a nationwide network of educators at all grade levels who are dedicated to teaching students about the Vietnam War era and building awareness of the Memorial Fund’s educational initiatives. Members of the Network represent the Memorial Fund in their school districts and communities, helping to educate other teachers and neighbors about the war’s legacy and how it continues to impact our nation today.

The Memorial Fund provides educators chosen to join the Network with educational resources and hosts a national conference in Washington, D.C. to help members develop lesson plans. Workshops and seminars about the Vietnam War and The Wall will be led by veterans, fellow teachers and other guest experts. The conference also includes activities at The Wall. The next Teach Vietnam Teachers Network National Conference will be held July 15-19 at American University. The Memorial Fund will provide meals, accommodations and local transportation during the conference to all Network members.

The Teach Vietnam Teachers Network was established in 2002. Currently, over 300 educators are members of the Network.

Educators interested in joining the Teach Vietnam Teachers Network should contact the Memorial Fund at (202) 393-0090 or e-mail vvmf@vvmf.org.  Applications can also be downloaded from the Memorial Fund’s Web site (click here).  To be considered for the Class of 2009, teachers must ensure that all application materials are received by the Memorial Fund by Friday, March 27, 2009. A limited number of teachers will be accepted for the Class of 2009.

Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Today, through a series of outreach programs, it is dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Wall, promoting healing, educating about the impact of the Vietnam War and is building the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Center, an underground educational facility, near The Wall.
