Thank you for the interesting, well written, and informative original article.
The idea of individual justice, human rights, and respect for the rules of international law have been aggressively and criminally abrogated by the Orwellian "War Against Terror" inclusive of the illegal, aggressive, and criminal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We have engaged in a pogrom against Muslims in the region with the result that hundreds of thousands of Muslims have been killed, displaced from their homes and nations, and denied fundamental civil rights.
The greatest defense that a nation has against "terror" and the preservation of civil liberties at home is to promulgate the rule of law, civil liberties, and civil rights through out the world rather than aggressive war and the violation of the same through out the world.
Those who wish to concentrate unjust economic and political power in themselves and their special interests will continue to use those Machiavellian, Orwellian, and Authoritarian means and ends to further these unjust ends unless veterans and others assertively oppose the same.

"In time of actual war, great discretionary powers are constantly given to the Executive Magistrate. Constant apprehension of War, has the same tendency to render the head too large for the body. A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence agst. foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended. Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretext of defending, have enslaved the people.
o	Speech, Constitutional Convention (1787-06-29), from Max Farrand's Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, vol. I [1] (1911), p. 465 James Madison, President of the United States"
