Is Osama Bin Laden dead?

The BBC News online is running an article today entitled Is Osama Bin Laden dead or alive?  It is a good question and from the article I think we can assume that he is dead.

In today’s Washington Post there is a piece entitled Bin Laden claims airline bomb attempt on Christmas in which an audio tape played on Arab radio allegedly is OBL claiming responsibilty for the Christmas attempted attack on an American airliner.
Here is the same story with a different slant from CNN News entitled Report: New bin Laden tape emerges .

In today’s New York Times in the book review section we have a piece entitled Who Declares War? in which two scholars argue whether or not our present incredibly powerful Executive Branch serves the people well.  Is it too much power in the hands of a president, a man by definition who is supposed to “preside” over government?

In another piece from today’s New York Times entitled Gates Sees Fallout From Troubled Ties With Pakistan we learn of the problems that come with being Robert Gates and attempting to hold Pakistan with the spehere of American influence.  It seems to be an uneven sitution at best.
The Associated Press is reporting that yesterday Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel has claimed that Israel will stay in parts of the West Bank forever, annexing thme for all intents and purposes.  The story is entitled Premier: Israel to keep parts of West bank forever .  I doubt that this is helpful to the peace process.
In yet another piece of cultural phenomenon out of the Middle East that stuns Westerners the Associated Press is reporting today that a 13 year old girl will recieve 90 lashes for assaulting a teacher at school.  She brought a phone camera to school and that is forbidden.  The nature of the assault is a bit vague.  The story is entitled Lashing, prison ordered for Saudi teen .

In today’s Time Magazine online we read a piece entitled Tony Blair’s Iraq War Wounds in which the public forum for the soon to be heard explanation for Britain’s involvement in the Iraq-Afghan wars is standing room only for participants. Reporters have to participate in a lottery to get into the room.  It seems that Tony Blair has a lot of explaining to do.

The Middle East is always good for conflicting opinions and information.  But today at least, it is relatively quiet. So far anyway.

  1. The ghost of OBL, as per your recent report, makes the rich richer. It is the average American who suffers; bereavement, taxes, agony etc.
Bob Gates is a decent man who landed in Pakistan at a bad time. I remember those days when we were cooperating on Afghan Jihad whereby I also saw Director Casey in mid-80′ in Islamabad before my posting to Germany as a follow-up.
Despite being, generally, pro-US, the people are feeling disgusted about this relationship due to the regular killings of civilians in Af-Pak, the India-factor, death/destruction caused but no palpable signs of resettlement of the IDP etc.
In addition, the people are also feeling cut up by the NRO affair which was nursed by the US and many here believe that there was a game-plan behind the killing of Miss Bhutto.

  2. Madame Bhutto stated in an interview with David Frost in London that Bin Laden was dead and she knew who killed him. There was an obit in the Pakstani Times Dec. 2004. The man had kidney failure requiring dialyis every two days. Thats why he was in Tora Bora when Bush let him get away. Can anyone do a little critical thinking and explain to the rest of us how this man is surviving in a cave while needing dialysis? Notice the Clintons nor Obama speak about him…Bush did on a regular basis…the news media will glom onto to any story whether factual or not. As someone said, “the israelies should understand we cant be fooled by this one anymore”.
