NATO struggling to fulfill commitments for more troops in Afghanistan – Washington Post

Okay.  Here is the situation and it is not what we were told would happen by our friends.

NATO either cannot or will not send the troops to Afghanistan that they promised Obama that they would send.  There is stiff opposition among the European governments to any increase in troop levels for this unpopular war.  Simply stated, their citizens do not support the war.  There is no surprise there.

Now, here is the question.

Why are European governments sensitive to the demands of their citizens on this issue of ‘soldiering up’ for an unwanted war and our government just simply plods along?

Why are we sending our sons and daughters, grandsons and grand daughers  into harm’s way against the will of the majority of our people?

What is the lesson to be learned here?

The Washington Post article is entitled NATO struggling to fulfill commitments for more troops in Afghanistan .

Read between the lines.  The article should be entitled “European governments teach American politicians about responsibilities to their constituents”.

Maybe Donald Rumsfeld was wrong.  Maybe “Old Europe” has lessons to teach us after all!

  1. NATO is a Cold War dinosaur that has outlived it’s purpose. We should get out
of it and the UN. That being said, Mr. Barnes has a point about government
listening to it’s people. The Founders of this country warned against entangling
alliances and we still keep ignoring that sound advice.
