They sell out. They don't realize that they do and they resent being told that they do. But in the end, they become what they despise. I suspect that this has happened to John McCain in such a way that everybody around him sees this but him. THIS is the reason for term limits on public officials in any particular office on any level of government. It has to do with people selling out. We should have a two term limit for all Senators and Congressmen, all mayors and councilmen in the city government, all state representatives. Period. John McCain and his degeneration into a living symbol of "whatever" is a poster boy for why that must be the case if we are going to have honest government in this country.
