The Islamic fundamentalism was considered a potential energy (physics) once during the early days of Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. It was subsequently perpetuated by United States into kinetic energy where the momentum has taken a nonstop motion and still spinning out of control.
However, as Nouri said, there are ways to make this notion of talibanization changed into conciliatory progress. If entire Europe and Japan was transformed into a world order mainstream model after WWII, then Afghanistan can too. One may say Afghanistan is nowhere close to then technological advanced Japan and Europe were. The answer is; that should be fine, except the Afghan transformation may take longer and therefoe patience is urged.

"Yes, the Afghans have been and still are the victims of a group named Taliban that did not exist until 1995. The only three nations in the world that recognized the government of Taliban in 1995 were Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emeritus. These three nations never do anything without the consent of United States of America. Once Taliban were in power they provided a safe haven for an Arab group called Al Qaeda that committed the heinous crime of September 11. We made that mistake by allowing or ordering these three nations to create the government of Taliban. Now; does it worth it to sacrifice the lives of young American men and innocent men, women and children of Afghanistan to eliminate the so called Taliban? We believe in the abolishment of the group called Taliban also, but there is a better way which is our way to do it."

Afghans are sick of the Taliban. They way they see it, the Taliban are the occupiers. They are the ones who murder and mutilate innocent people to scare the rest into supporting them. If the taliban went away, the only people left would be the Afghans - because we are only there to defend the Afghans and their government from being taken over by the Taliban. If we leave, the Afghans lose (their freedom, their hands, and their heads!)

Some Local leaders in Afghanistan have managed to throw off the Taliban yoke themselves, just like the Iraqis did to al Qaeda in Anbar. They put together militias and fight back. Even in the current operation, locals are pointing out IEDs for us.

So, what if we give up? a) the Taliban resumes control and b) uses the Opium to make money to c) give to bin Laden to set up training camps, plan and finance a nuclear attack against the US. Wait a minute - we already were attacked with 3000 dead and sections of New York and the pentagon in Washington destroyed which is why we are in Afghanistan now.

We live in the type of society that cannot thrive living in fear. On 911 we lost billions in buildings, but we lost trillions in capital in our stock market. So letting the Taliban assume their pre-911 operations will lead to disaster for us.

You live in a fantasy land if you think it will be better for anyone except bin laden if we leave. You are blind if you think the killing and torture will stop if we leave.
