Vocational Rehabilitation Pay Veteran’s Reimbursement for School

On February 12th, I published a story highlighting a disabled veteran who was unable to get a reimbursement for a student loan that was used to cover educational expenses while enrolled in vocational rehabilitation. Well, I am proud to report that the vocational rehabilitation program has decided that they intend to pay the costs, so [...]

The appeal of unreality

When Al Franken ran for the Senate, people questioned his credentials, but good grief, people, comedy is hard work compared to harrumphing. It takes brains and elegance and courage to make people laugh. A comedian who joins the Senate has taken a step down on the social scale and everybody knows it.

Johnson, Boone Question Obama’s Aim at Banks

Wish President Obama would just say the U.S.A. resembles an oligarchy in many ways, this is not good, I’m for the people and: Here’s what we’re going to do. This clearly has not happened. The Nation’s Katrina vanden Heuvel points out that the sound of one hand clapping is silence and the results of bi partisan legislation when one party refuses to play is… gridlock. John McCain Has Gone Crazy

Facing a strong challenge from  J.D. Hayworth for the primary election in August, John McCain is desperate. When McCain gets desperate, the McC-man lies or gets seriously deluded. It’s almost embarrassing, but I don’t like McCain so let the good times roll though a charitable diagnosis is that McCain has gone bat-shite crazy uttering “pathetically, obviously untrue [...]

Distant Wars, Constant Ghosts

SINCE the two recent NATO-led military strikes that accidentally killed dozens of Afghan civilians, I have been thinking a great deal about the psychic toll that killing takes on soldiers.
In 2007, I was an Army lieutenant leading a group on a house-clearing mission in Baquba, Iraq, when I called in an artillery strike on a house. The strike destroyed the house and killed everyone inside. I thought we had struck enemy fighters, but I was wrong. A father, mother and their children had been huddled inside.

The Irish Pride of the Sullivan Brothers

The words were from a letter that Mrs. Alleta Sullivan received from President Roosevelt, when it was confirmed that all five of her sons were missing in action after the sinking of the USS Juneau during the Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. While most aboard the Juneau perished, a few remained alive including the eldest Sullivan brother George, who would later die at sea. The last remaining survivors lived through of a horrific ordeal of exhaustion, heat, sharks, hunger and thirst.
