But let me add one further point. There is another reason for deploying 15,000 troops this place. The point is to control the opium fields. You can be sure that these troops will be running daily patrols throughout the region, and will control all the roads in and out. The US wants to control the opium. To destroy it? No. Opium production has skyrocketed since the US invasion of Afghanistan. Remember what happened in Iraq? The first thing we did was to secure the oilfields. Now we are securing the natural assets of Afghanistan. Recently, the United Nations' drugs and crime czar Antonio Maria Costa said that drug money worth billions of dollars kept the financial system afloat at the height of the global crisis.* I wonder if there is a connection here.
