N.C. woman gets $9M in alienation of affection suit

N.C. woman gets $9M in alienation of affection suit
A woman sues her husband’s lover for ruining their marriage

By Associated Press
A jury has awarded a North Carolina woman $9 million from her husband’s lover after ruling the other woman ruined their marriage.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports the jury ruled this week in 60-year-old Cynthia Shackelford’s alienation of affection case. North Carolina is one of a handful of states that allows jilted spouses to sue over affairs.

Shackelford says her husband was a Greensboro attorney when he started an affair before separating from her in April 2005.

The other woman didn’t respond to a message left by the newspaper.

Shackelford’s lawyer says she might not get the full $9 million, but Shackelford wanted to send a message that the sanctity of marriage should be respected.

  1. oh give me a freakin’ break. how much is she suing her husband? i dated a married man. he lied and said he was single with two kids. after i fell hard for him it was then that he revealed the truth. what if he led the mistress to believe he was single? it is very easy to do in the military. married men&women in the military say that they are geographically single. their spouse is in one state or country and they are in another. they fail to tell this to the person that they are dating. the cheater also has friends and relatives who will lie for them. some even go out the way by getting a bachelor or bachelorette pad. this woman needs to stop crying over spilled milk and drive on. that’s right! put on your big girl panties and move on expeditiously. her husband is the one who disrespected her and their unified marriage. that woman wasn’t the first and she probably won’t be the last that he has had an affair with.

  2. Figures a woman who had an affair would be against this legislation. I’m sure if the other woman had been deceived that would have come out in evidence. Also this case the wife sued for $1 – the jury awarded $9million. I think every state should re-enact this law and it should be illegal to have an affair in every state – you’ve broken a legal bond.

  3. Hell Yeah Dee! If anybody needs to “put on her big girl panties and move on expeditiously” it’s the mistress of the man “who lied and said he was single with two kids”, and other women duped into affairs with married men (If there was such a thing as a cosmic IQ test, you failed it!).
