Sean Hannity and Ollie North accused of scamming Veterans

March 31, 2010 posted by Robert L. Hanafin · 15 Comments

In line with our article on those non-profit organizations that do provide a service to our Veterans and ‘Support Our Troops’ as was covered in my previous article Do All Non-Profits really Support Veterans, Troops, and Military Families?

We will be exposing reports of fraudulent efforts and causes that scam our Veterans and Troops. We are also working on getting the latest ratings of organizations that provide services or support to our Veterans and Troops from the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) that has reportedly just released its latest ratings for April-May 2010.

Joe Conason at Salon reports that Sean Hannity and Ollie North say they collect millions of dollars for veterans’ kids. But where did the money go?

Robert L. Hanafin, Major, U.S. Air Force-Retired, Veterans Today News

Do Hannity and North operate a “charitable” fraud?

A potentially damaging scandal erupted that implicates Fox News Channel personalities Sean Hannity and Oliver North in the worst kind of charitable fraud.

According to complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission and the IRS, the two right-wing icons have exploited American veterans for personal and partisan gain. The actions filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) accuse Hannity and North of misusing millions of dollars collected by the Freedom Alliance, a charity they promote and control.

Veterans Today Editorial Comment: If the accusations prove to be true, this scandal will open up more questions about how charity watchdog organizations rate such efforts. A check of the Freedom Alliance shows that they claim at four star rating from Charity Navigator, have been screened by the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and paid for Best in America Independent Charities recognition via membership in that organization.

Similar accusations were aired recently by right-wing blogger Debbie Schlussel, who complained that the “Freedom Concerts” sponsored by the Freedom Alliance and headlined by Hannity were not donating all proceeds — estimated at more than $10 million — to scholarships for the children of wounded and killed service members, as advertised. But now CREW, which had been investigating the same allegations independently before Schlussel posted her warning, has completed its own probe and filed legal actions before the two federal agencies.

Without naming who two of the most left-wing organizations were that are attacking Hannity and North, we must assume that CREW is one of them, according to a Freedom Alliance media release. The conservative charity organization claims these complaints to the IRS and FTC are a smear campaigns from the political left-wing. However, one complaint has been lodged by a right-wing blogger, and we would not necessarily consider VoteVets a political action committee affiliated with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to be too left of center given their silence on the Afghanistan War.

POINT: These are not anti-war groups filing complaints against Freedom Alliance moderate maybe but calling them left-wing is a bit awkward.

Freedom Alliance Responds to Complaints

By Freedom Alliance
Monday, 29 March 2010
“Today, Freedom Alliance was attacked with baseless complaints. There is absolutely no merit to the scurrilous charges launched against Freedom Alliance from two of the most left-wing organizations in the country.“The smear-mongers who have launched this politically motivated witch hunt against Freedom Alliance will be proven wrong as we aggressively defend ourselves in the days and weeks ahead.”

-Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon

A review of Charity Navigator shows that Freedom Alliance has indeed been rated a four star, however comments sent to Charity Navigator take issue with the four star rating and includes the above response from Freedom Alliance. The news section also takes issue with the rating given by Charity Navigator with VoteVets a political action committee associated with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and other younger Veterans Service Organizations has filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission.

It will be insightful to follow these developments, and it is essential to note that efforts and causes that claim to support our troops and Veterans needs much closer scrutiny and monitoring by Congress, and each state’s Attorney General, and the Justice Department as necessary if they have broken any federal laws.

To Freedom Alliance’s credit they did pass the stringent screening and requirements of a noted charity watchdog organization Charity Navigator so if any legal actions find Freedom Alliance has not been spending proceeds on the children of Veterans, Vets or our troops in general will reflect negatively on Charity Navigator.

Freedom Alliance also got a satisfactory C- rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) to its favor so any illegal actions by the management of Freedom Alliance could also shed negative light on AIP a watchdog organization that has rated far too many Veterans and Troop support efforts and causes with an “F” efficiency rating. A ‘C minus’ rating reflects that although Freedom Alliance could do better they are supposedly meeting their obligations to their stated mission or cause.

Speaking of which, the latest ratings of Veteran and Military related charities and causes has just been posted by AIG in their recent April-May 2010 newsletter to members of Congress. That is a story we will be preparing for our readers, because little has changed since the last ratings in 2007.

first i think anyone that scams a veteran is low.and deserves to be thoroughly punished for the act.
on agent orange i have a big question for the veterans affairs.why does it take years to add new illnesses to the list of ailments from agent orange. why are they not researching and adding all the illnesses alot sooner.we are dying left and right from this chemical and suffering with all types of ailments prior to dying.this is very wrong. i’m a totally disabled vietnam veteran who is coming down with all types of medical issues from agent orange.hurry up va or are you just waiting to see if we die before you admit to more.
my last question is when we went to vietnam,we took our whole body.but just recently the va denied post traumatic stress from veterans suffering with it not to recieve purple hearts. this is very wrong. if your body is injured in war you get a purple heart. but if your mind is hurt you get nothing. this in my opinion is a violation and discrinatory decision by the veterans affairs.our minds are very important and actually as important if not more than feet arms legs. and so on. so i feel this should be brought up again and if i could arrange enough veterans to sign a petition i will be the first to sign demanding they re-evaluate that decision.we deserve the right to wear that purple heart as any other combat injured veteran.
that what i have to say for now.to all my brothers god bless and we are always one.

  2. It’s sad, Sad, SAD! I’ve been covering issues of interest to OUR Troops, Military Families and Veterans (especially Disabled Vets) for nearly a decade now here in Souther Nevada and State-wide), and staying up on issues nationally!

I can tell you Sheldon Adelson, the hard right winger that owns the Venetian Hotel & Casino has been aligned with Freedom Works, Freedom Alliance, Freedom Concerts and this whole gang of political profiteers on the far right for years now! They purposely play to the needs of OUR Troops, Military Families and Veterans by purporting to do some really charitable work – but, they’re obviously in it to win partisan political points by pandering and just patronizing our community!

Here in Nevada Sen. John Ensign (who’s soon to be under indictment), Congressman Dean Heller and former Congressman John Porter, as well as our Governor Jim Gibbons, routinely gathered together a select group of military families and vets that they had determined were not well educated or politically astute – invited them to events and told them what they wanted to here – then, went right back to Washington, D.C. and voted AGAINST our needs! When you compared their rhetoric to their voting records the hypocrisy was just blatant! It took us 6 years, and 3 (two year) political cycles to vote out Porter and replace him with our new Congresswoman Dina Titus – it takes a lot of time and effort to get the facts out there, educate our community, and get them to start voting smart!

That’s not to say we don’t have some serious problems with Democrats – we do, indeed!

What’s so frustrating is that we in the Military/Veterans Community have allowed most of our issues to become partisan! Our issues, like true patriotism, should be NON-Partisan!

I’ve got no problem with a sitting President having a diverse sampling of OUR Troops in the backdrop of an appearance – the President is the Commander-In-Chief! But, we went astray when we started allowing so many other politicians to use media and pander and patronize us as political props – THAT has to STOP!

There have been a number of expose’s where other phony groups have been predators for profit on our community – all of them should be investigated fairly, and IF found guilty, prosecuted to the full extent of the law! Our duty is to get the facts straight and do the objective reporting of those facts!

As for C.R.E.W. (Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington) I think if you look just a little deeper, you’ll find they are very bi-partisan and non-partisan (it’s a group that has Democrats, Independents and Republicans working on staff to keep it balanced)!

  3. Abides says:

You can slice this anyway you want – but it is a fact that a lot of patriotic Americans were led to believe that their attendance at the Hannity summer concerts would directly benefit veterans and their families (with scholarships). Do you really remember Sean Hannity ever once telling his followers that only about 10% would go to the veterans and their families?

Instead of trying to spin their way out of this, Hannity, Lt Col North, and the Freedom Alliance have to come clean. Full disclosure: Tell people who went to these concerts EXACTLY where the money went.

Then let the free market decide the fate of the Freedom Alliance and Sean Hannity’s broadcasting career.

    Veterans Today Editorial Comment:

“Instead of trying to spin their way out of this, Hannity, Lt Col North, and the Freedom Alliance have to come clean. Full disclosure: Tell people who went to these concerts EXACTLY where the money went. Then let the free market decide the fate of the Freedom Alliance and Sean Hannity’s broadcasting career.”

This has to be the BEST response to this article thus far. As reported on Veteran Today we have to first give Hannity and North the benefit of the doubt, hell they were rated as efficient by at least two Charity Watchdog organizations who are good at what they do AIP and Charity Navigator. They received a four star from Charity Navigator and as noted the rating data appears on Charity Navigator’s website with a break down on how the efficiency rating was done.

We know from experience that the American Institute of Philanthropy is strict and not reluctant to go after any Veterans or Troops charity that is incompetent at funds raised going to Vets and Troops.

NOTE: Just because a Vet or Troop Charity or Cause is no efficient does not mean it is a SCAM. As we understand it the business of watchdog organizations is to advise donors that this charity or cause does not deliver on its stated mission or cause. The message to charities and causes is to get their act together, spend less on advertising, and selling the cause and more on Our Troops and Veterans.

BTW thanks for the link to Guidestar. But even Guidestar can only rate an organization on the information the charity or cause provides. If the information is fraudulent or plain out lies, it is up to the watchdog organization to determine if the data being provided by Freedom Alliance or any other cause is fixed and report it to the IRS and public.

    • Blackcoat says:

What is so difficult for Hannity, North, and the Freedom Alliance to post the contract (agreement), the results (money contributed) and amount of money distributed, “post haste) right here on this Blog? If they have nothing to hide and they are so “Gung Ho” in their endeavor to help those that they say they are helping, wouldn’t a simple posting be a place to start? Lastly, who believes that many people advertising an event such as this do not have an ulterior-motive and use whatever spin that they can to further their agenda? I certainly do not believe it. Semper Fidelis. Blackcoat

      Veterans Today Editorial Comment:

Blackcoat, we do not believe for a second that FOX, Sean Hannity or Oliver North could care less what an independent blog like ours has to say about them. We felt it was about as balanced a posting as we could make it. Frankly, I can personally see a biased politically partisan attack on Hannity and North NOT from the left per se (that is FOX and right-wing rhetoric, I should know coming from the right wing).

Point: The ratings given their effort Freedom Alliance by charity watchdog groups does not jive with the attacks on Hannity and North, and let me assure you I’m no fan of either Hannity or North just stating facts as I found them.

Now that could mean either Freedom Alliance is hiding factual data from the American Institute of Philanthropy for example and Charity Navigator, but it is up to the charity watchdogs groups to investigate that NOT Veterans Today, we have no such capability nor scope.

That said, we know that the fund raising efficiency of Freedom Alliance has been lowered, but they still remain a satisfactory effort on delivering what they say they do. More $$$ is reportedly going to Veterans and Military Families than to administrators of Freedom Alliance or to advertising the Freedom Alliance logo if you get my point.

However, Freedom Alliance could be lying, and we are not saying that.

  4. Dave says:

The other group that Freedom Alliance might be talking about is actually a small group called One People’s Project. They were the first to break this story in 2007.

    http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=358%3Asean-hannitys-freedom-concerts-now-a-conservative-has-questions&catid=39%3Astupid-right-wingers&Itemid=1

Veterans Today Editorial Note: Most of our readers have no clue what One People’s Project is by just going to their website. We could not find an ABOUT US link. However, this is what we did learn.

One Peoples Project (OPP) was founded in 2000 to monitor and publish information about alleged racist and far right groups and individuals, so we assume in this respect that since it monitors the far right it must be left-wing in orientation.

Its most prominent members are its founder Daryle Lamont Jenkins and Joshua Hoyt, who joined the group in 2002.

The precursor of One People’s Project resulted from a counter-demonstration to a July 4, 2000 rally in Morristown, New Jersey, that was billed as Independence from Affirmative-Action Day, which was held by the white supremacist group Nationalist Movement.

Among them was activist Daryle Lamont Jenkins, at the time a member of the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based group New Jersey Freedom Organization (NJFO). The counter-demonstration was called the One People’s Rally.

On the day of the rally, 300 persons turned out to face nine supporters of the Nationalist Movement. Afterward, the One People’s Project decided to monitor and track such racist groups. Originally named One People’s Coalition, with Jenkins as its spokesperson, the group researched and published information about the white racist Nationalist Movement’s awards ceremony at the Manville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hall. This led to the cancellation of the event.

For American Veterans it is notable that an organization like the VFW would cancel the renting of one of its halls by any racists or supremacists groups be they white, black, or green.

Who or what is the Nationalist Movement?

The Nationalist Movement is a Mississippi-based, white supremacist organization that advocates what it calls a “pro-majority” position. It has been called white supremacist by the Associated Press and Anti-Defamation League, among others. Its leader is Richard Barrett and its Secretary is Barry Hackney.

It has also been monitored by the Justice Department and used as an example of a Domestic Terrorist Organization by DoD. Its activities include its Warrior-Training Camp for right-wing militia members, Unixandria Library, Crosstar website, Prisoner Pen-Pal Club, All The Way newspaper, Free-Tip news-service, Crosstar Forum, Airlink television-studios and Nationalist Legal-Defense Fund. The symbol of the movement is the Crosstar similar to traditional Ku Klux Klan (KKK) symbols.

During 2001, the renamed One People’s Project broadened their focus, to publish information on their website about American conservatives; ranging from the mainstream to the far right. One People’s Project has published phone numbers, home addresses and workplace addresses of some individuals.

In November 2001, One People’s Project began focusing heavily on white supremacist groups that were attempting to take advantage of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The most notable of these groups was the Hillsboro, West Virginia-based National Alliance. The National Alliance is another white separatist political organization. It was founded by William Luther Pierce, and is based in the Pierce family’s compound in Hillsboro, West Virginia.

Membership is not based upon citizenship in any particular country, but only upon all-white, non-Jewish European ancestry. The National Alliance is often included in lists of Neo-Nazi groups by their political rivals, in part due to its alleged glorification of Adolf Hitler. For example, within an article appearing in a 1989 issue of one of its magazines National Vanguard had celebrated the 100th anniversary of Hitler’s birth, declaring him “the greatest man of our era”.

On July 28, 2007, far right-wing conservative blogger Robb Pearson sponsored a rally to support a plan by the mayor of Morristown, New Jersey, to deputize law enforcement officials to enforce immigration laws. A notice on the One People’s Project website called the event an “anti-immigrant rally”, although Pearson described it as a rally against illegal immigration. During the rally, counter-demonstrators chanted, while rally participants sang the The Star-Spangled Banner.

One People’s Project has been featured on numerous television programs and newspaper articles. It has also been mentioned in Gwen Ifill’s book, The Breakthrough.

I would agree…it is a disgrace for individuals or organizations to mislead for gain; however, I did not read anything that would immediately discredit the intentions of “The Freedom Alliance.” The proof is in the numbers and not in the words of entities claiming foul play. Lets get the facts before we send anyone to the gallows.

A recent investigative report by Jeff Testerman and John Martin dealt with a non-profit organization, U.S. Navy Veterans Association. See the St. Petersburg FL Times for the two part report. Read and appreciate.

  7. Military Mom says:

Hannity and North are not the only FOX personalities that seem to be happy to use the honor of our veterans to promote themselves – Glenn Beck is holding a rally in August on the National Mall – originally planned as the day he’d announce his 100 Year “Plan” for America, he changed direction (when the Park Service perhaps informed him that holding a rally to sell a book would not be permitted, one might surmise) but he found a willing non-profit to hold a veteran’s charity “fundraiser” on the Mall instead – featuring Beck himself of course…but how is this rally being paid for? Beck is asking his fans to make donations to the charity (tax deductible donations?) but only after Beck’s rally expenses are met will the charity get any of the donations.

Is Beck getting to have a tax-deductible vanity rally on the mall by using our veterans? This seems not right on several levels.

For a military/veteran’s charity to publicly align with a man whose celebrity is so closely tied to despicable characterizations of the sitting Commander in Chief and our duly elected government, it is inappropriate from the get-go. For a multi-millionaire one-man entertainment industry like Beck to be having funds to pay for his vanity rally funneled through a veteran’s charity seems like a questionable way to pay for his show – no matter how many wounded veterans he parades in front of his fans.

I think Beck and Fox and the SOWF need to be asked lots of questions about this – it really galls me as a military family member. Beck claims he’ll be “Restoring Honor” – I say, our veterans don’t need their honor “restored” by a television shock jock, nor has our country lost its honor. I will always be proud of my country and I don’t need the likes of Beck to tell me how to do it.

VETERANS TODAY EDITORIAL COMMENT: You need to be clear on which Military/Veteran’s Charity or Non-Profit you are referring to. We have to assume you are talking about the Special Operations Warfare Foundation (SOWF)http://www.specialops.org/?

Of note the Special Operations Warfare Fund is also Four Star charity recognized by Charity Navigator. However, go to the news link at Charity Navigator and you will note posted concerns about the actual intent of the cause. SOWF is not rated at all by the American Institute of Philanthropy, but they may not have to honor (no pun intended) requests from AIP for fund raising efficiency documentation since they may have a Veteran/Fraternal exemption from reporting on their non-profit status.

Lastly, Veterans regardless what our political views are, live in a delusional world if we believe the vast majority of traditional and now non-traditional Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) getting Congressional charter or tax free status are liberals or even left of center in their views.

The very name Restoring Honor rings of a major Tea Party on the Mall in DC so what. The only Vets who are going to show up are those who share right-wing views anyway. They have just as much right to express their views as the anti-war movement, the immigration reform movement, or what have you. It is up to donors of said non-profit to do their home work and be smart enough to see a VSO or related non-profit teaming up with a political party or right-wing radio or TV celebrity.

It is up to American voters to bug Congress to pull a VSO’s tax exempt charter or file complaints with the IRS about a non-profit being a front for a partisan political organization or movement.

Check it out within a few decades most of these Old White Boy groups with the funny hats are gonna die out anyway with precious few young bloods to take their place. The Vietnam War generation is fast replacing the WWII as the dominant Veterans group, and not as many of us were drafted, enlisted, what have you compared to that older generation. The younger generation of Veterans from the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan will be even smaller.

To date, we have around 22 million people claiming Vet status in the U.S. I sincerely doubt there are near 5 million Veterans of the Gulf War and current wars combined to take our place. That is unless we have a BIG WAR calling for massive mobilization and of course producing MORE VETERANS BY THE MILLIONS. (wink)

  8. Ron says:

“A review of Charity Navigator shows that Freedom Alliance has indeed been rated a four star”

If you click on your own link to Charity Navigator. they have Freedom Alliance rated 2 stars not 4.

A 2 Star rating means the effort or cause meets or nearly meets industry standards but under-performs most charities in its Cause. As a 4 Star is EXCEPTIONAL, a 2 Star is a Vet effort or cause that NEEDS IMPROVEMENT.

Veterans Today Editorial Comment: This is indeed TRUE Ron. However you will note that the 2 star rating is an UPDATE since this story was posted. When we were researching the story the Charity Navigator Rating was 4 star. Question is does the combination of comments, especially complaints against a cause, made to Charity Navigator on a charity combined with negative press impact the rating is plausible. If nothing else too many complaints about a Vet or Troops effort combined with too much negative publicity could put a fire under Charity Navigator to ask the charity to provide an UPDATE. Only Charity Navigator can respond to that.

Now, did the negative publicity or new data submitted by Freedom Alliance to Charity Navigator lower their rating from a 4 star to a 2 star is another matter. That said, we can name you a listing of Veterans and Troops causes that do not even rate a star at all. Meaning the 2 star reflects that Freedom Alliance still does what it says it does provide support and assistance to our Vets and Troops.

However, closer examination of Charity Navigator shows that, unlike the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), Charity Navigator does not rate the effectiveness of a Vet or Troop effort or cause. CN does not rate how well a charity, effort, or cause provides assistance or if more donations go toward promoting the charity, effort, or cause in admin overhead and advertising to sell Freedom Alliance than goes to scholarships for kids is an example.

Also of note this is what Charity Navigator has to say about its rating system:

Why doesn’t Charity Navigator evaluate program effectiveness?
At this time, evaluating the effectiveness of a charity’s programs is out of our scope. We hope over time to expand the information we provide donors, and that includes developing a methodology for measuring an organization’s output. For now we’re still seeking a methodology that would allow us to apply a uniform standard to all charities and thus allow us to continue to provide donors unbiased, trustworthy ratings.

Veterans Today, as in this article, strongly recommends that donors should not only check directly with the Veteran or Troop effort, cause, or charity BUT to also compare the ratings given by Charity Navigator with a watchdog organization that does evaluate program effectiveness. To this end the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) comes to mind. Of course Charity Navigator IS NOT going to refer donors to a competing watchdog organization HOWEVER Charity Navigator does recommend that:

Should I use your ratings exclusively to determine if I should support a charity?

We do not recommend using our ratings as the only factor in deciding whether to support a particular organization. Givers should also seek out additional information from charities directly and through other private and public sources to evaluate what a charity does and how well they do it.

Intelligent giving depends on reliable information. Charity Navigator provides an important piece of this information, and we encourage givers to learn as much as they can about a charity before deciding to support it.

i used to listen to fox news until i realized it was all right-wing propaganda, and there constant pro-America and pro-veteran was nothing but rhetoric and hype to make themselves appear to be something beside the hypocrites that they are.i am a 100 percent disabled service connected vet who realizes that the republican party is using veterans issues only for political gain and that they personally could care less about vets.most re-pubs. are very good at avoiding the battlefield but they love promoting war for huge financial profit.i used to be a republican until i found out that there only god is there endless greed.there party is not only the party of no for the people, but one that has been taken over by fanatics, bigots, buffoons and big corporations.

Veterans Today Editorial Comment: What you say about Fox can apply to most mainstream media outlets, but of course Fox was designed to be a right-wing alternative to what many fanatics, bigots, buffoons, and big corporations came to be viewed at liberal, if not left-wing media. You know the media that helped the liberal and leftist Vietnam anti-war movement lose that war. However, what you say about the Republican party could almost be said about any political entity that is composed mostly of people who never wore a uniform. The fact that more Republicans made an art out of avoiding the battlefield in no way let Democrats or even Independents who’ve avoided the battlefield off the hook. Case in point just mention two words in polite conversation THE DRAFT and we are going to have just as many Democrats puking as Republicans except Republicans just may puke more. The right-wing only appears to be good at avoiding military service, but we believe more Democrats are going to cry conscription is slavery that Republicans. Now as to a party taken over by fanatics, bigots, buffoons, and big corporations. Would it not be the fanatics, bigots, buffoons, and big corporations that would make the BEST Crusaders in Iraq, the Middle East in general, and Afghanistan, Somalia, and so on. If their bite is as vicious as their bark America could conquer the Muslin World in not time, then put what is left of the Communist world in chains or GITMO – take your pick. Being facetious here, but you get the point.

Sean Hannity, well it’s hard for me to trust anyone who maintains a high profile position with American Mainstream Media.

This same topic has come up several times on different Charity Orgaiizations, as well as when WE THE PEOPLE have DONATED MONEY to places over seas to help the poor.

In almost EVERY CASE, the end result has been that the accusers do not know what it takes in order to run a company, be it non-profit or for-profit. Yes, even the Haiti relief fund set up by Wicleff Jon is included in this thought.

Many people think that the people running the operations work for free. But in reality, they do not, and as you and I, must get paid for their work.

I am not saying any one is not guilty here, just that we need to see all of the facts before you start jumping down their throats.
