Secretary Shinseki Announces Louisville Expansion

More Space for Health Care Services Coming

WASHINGTON April 7, 2010 – Louisville-area Veterans are another step closer to receiving expanded access to high quality, state-of-the-art medical care.  The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced plans to acquire land to expand the VA’s 21st century health care locally.

“Veterans deserve the best quality health care,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.  “This expansion demonstrates VA’s commitment to Veterans.  We will ensure they have access to the top-notch care they have earned through their military service.”

VA is seeking options for expanded health care operations, specifically in Jefferson County, adjacent to the University of Louisville medical center and at the current VA medical center on Zorn Avenue.

The additional space would enable VA to improve access and add capabilities that are not available at the current Louisville VA Medical Center because of the aging infrastructure, existing treatment space for patients and insufficient parking.

Shinseki said VA will provide opportunities for Veterans and other stakeholders to express their views on proposed sites as part of the evaluation process.

Last year, VA spent nearly $1.4 billion on behalf of the state’s 344,000 Veterans.  VA operates medical centers in Louisville and Lexington, plus outpatient clinics and Vet Centers across the state, and seven national cemeteries.
