In Arizona, get ready for “Zee Papers Please”
The racial profiling edict passed by the Arizona legislature and now signed by their Governor permits police officers (on his own, without provacation) to stop you and ask “for your papers”.
Don’t have ID? No problem, go to jail or at least to the intergation room probably housed next door to the water boarding gas chamber!
As a Arab American, what if I don’t look exactly like John McCain? Am I in trouble because I don’t have my papers on me?
I am concerned that these white guys with badges will simply say I look like a terrorist or some dishwasher at the local Denny’s and confiscate my person. After all, we middle eastern types look like Mexicans too, so if this law is designed to keep brown people out, I am definitely going to be on their shite list.

Okay, look, clearly this legislation looks to be signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is specifically to kick out illegal Mexicans from the their state and frankly, I can understand their desire to enforce already legal laws on the books that are being ignored. But is this the way to go about it?
Obama just slammed the legislation and so this looks to be another war front between the reactionaries of the past and the peoples who are moving forward into a global competitive world.
As it stands, Mexico is our 2nd largest trading partner, the 14th largest economy in the world, and our neighbor. We have neglected our relationship with them for too long. It needs to be on top of our list; a thousand times higher up then sending billions to some holy land colonialist country with whom we actually have very little in common with or get much back in return. We need to invest at home in our schools and in our peoples and in Solar plants, like the one’s they are buidling in Mexicali. We need smart sharp minds who can make peace and prosperity with our neighbors; not inflicting the indigities of our own failures! That’s not the USA, that’s the NAZI’s
Mexico actually has a growing middle class and we need to invest much more in her future success because we’re inter-dependant with her. We share culuture, values, and even our food. Yeah, our food. I watch the Food Network all the time and the see the Irish American Bobby Flay making Fish Tacos. It’s great… the people get it. We are family! Now we need to act like it and stop this non-cents.
Look, we allowed these illegal immigrant problem to fester as we looked the other way so that we can hire cheap labor and Mexicans were willing. But now, we are stuck.
But deporting what amounts to probably 20 million people is immpratical period. Come on people! Get real!
We need to give all illegals amnesty and get them registered and paying taxes NOW!
Then, we need to immediately put forth a work permit program that allows Mexicans to come and work for a certain period of time. This will put working in the USA in the open and allow us to collect tax on their work plus give all concerned the dignity that this country needs to stand for as we move forward and back into principle centered leadership.
Look, I am for enforcement of law but as it stands, what I suspect will happen when the Governor signs this reactionary piece of legislation is that all illegals will run to other states leaving Arizona barren of these workers.
So if you’re in Arizona and can’t seem to get your services on time or that prices have risen by double because wages have suddenly risen to pay for non-brown people to wash dishes, then Bienvenidos a Arizona Nueva! Get ready, this is battle royal!

Interesting and excellent on-point article. With this state law pending in Arizona, though I am not an attorney, I wonder how much of it will contradicts or attempt to trump federal law. As a retired federal law enforcement officer, I know that local police forces (as far as I know)are not specifically chartered to act as federal immigration enforcement officers. I had heard of situations where local cops are “deputized” as special deputy US Marshals for high-intensity drug task force work and so on, but never in the immigration area. The problem is that local police departments may be setting themselves up for false arrest and unlawful detention lawsuits. The PDs have more important public safety and crime prevention missions with which to allocate their limited resources. They have a need to “stay in their lane” to protect the public from violent crime. ICE has enough resources to deal with the immigration issue. Moreover, like the article says, we need to revisit the immigration issue with a modernized “bracero” program to give both countries some meaningful investment incentives. Mexico is indeed one of our largest trading partners and our neighbor, for crying out loud.
If Military Vet or Active and you just happen to be, especially active and serving but not yet have taken Oath of Citizenship or are a Citizen by Birth or Oath, traveling through Arizona, or Living in Arizona, or Stationed in Arizona, better have more then your DD214 or Military ID, Much More, as well as enough time so after arrest they have the time to check out your paperwork, even if physically fit, or disabled and or missing limbs from your service to country, if you fit the description, i.e. suspicion, You’re Not Wanted!!!!!!!!
More interesting than the Arizona “Illegals ID Edict” is how far up & how fast within the Federal Court system this travels as part of a class action suit. With the recent Supreme Court decision to allow corporations to donate huge amounts to political campaigns, lobby groups and political action committees unchecked by campaign finance laws, this latest attack on the US Constitution should provide a
serious reality check for all those ultra-conservatives who want to keep the US stuck in the 1950′s indefinitely.
Did the author check into the breakdown of how many Hispanic police officers are in uniform around the state of Arizona? Did you check the poles on how many citizens of Arizona want, at least something, done about serious problems that exist along the border? When American citizens are killed on their own property there is a problem. When drug trafficers are rampant and kidnappings are taking place, there is a prob lem. My nephew is a twenty one year veteran of a large county police dept in Arizona. He is married to a beautiful Hispanic woman. He says the law(s) they are referring to are not as open as you indicate.

It is the State of Arizona’s business, not anyone else’s. The requirements of the new law are reasonable, if anyone choses to read them — which most readers won’t. I believe other border states will enact similar legislation, because the U.S. Federal Government has done little to protect our borders, one of their primary requirements under the Constitution.
Let Obama and his minions challenge Arizona’s attempt to stop the illegal murder and mayhem across its State. That’s the American way. Obama will lose once more, and go on to cement in the minds of REAL AMERICANS why he has no sense of wisdom, in fact, very little of the common sense required of his demanding job.

The author must of forgotten to look up Sanctuary City. These Cities, like San Diego and San Francisco prevent law enforcement agencies to question or arrest anyone standing around corners looking for work. Did the author live in a Sanctuary City, where he lost his job, house, and credit rating, to find out he is not qualified for social services, yet Illegals are and get everything available to them? Did the author stop to think why these illegals lie? They don’t care, they are here to get paid money to send back to their hometowns and never, never, apply to become a citizen? That’s okay right. Arizona a border state is rampant with murders, home invasion, kidnappings, rapes, assaults and one of the highest crime rates, by illegal immigrants. Its ignorance and indifference of Washington, not to enforce our immigration laws? In fact they have purposely underfunded them.

Seeing California is a Refuge state for illegal foreigners and already has the largest illegal population in Unites States other than New York. In principle, I agree with BRUCE above. Unfortunately, it’s not practical. We messed up so bad that it’s too late. We are stuck. We cannot just wave a magic wand and clean up the mess.
We need methodical sharp action taken over time. In my view, we need to first accept responsible for our failures and stop blaming others.
1. We need to register all illegals now and get them on the tax rolls
2. We need to give them work permits and for those, that want, a reasonable path to citizenship.
3. We need to give future Mexicans who want to work in our country work permits so that we can legally host them as so many companies depend on their efforts.
4. We need to enforce our federal laws.
5. We need to put Mexico at the very highest national security priority and continue to invest in their future so that their growing middle classes continue forward and work to help the working classes raise their wages
This approach will be great for the USA and over the next 5 years, will clean out this challenge and get things back into a balance while we work to compete on the global scene.

1. They will not register for fear of getting deported and taxed on the money they make and send to their families.
2. There are a ton of work permits already out there. And why should someone that has broken the law be granted something that someone else is working hard to get? These law breakers need to be punished and sent to the back of the line.

No, you need to read the law as it is writen. The police are not allowed to pull someone over just because they feel like it. There has to probable cause, in other words, the driver must break a trafic law. Then when the Officer aproaches the vehicle, they can ask the question. If the driver does not have the appropriate documents, then there is a problem.

I have no problem with deporting illegal aliens. They are NOT in USA legally and should go. The problem is that there are 20 million of them and we’ve let this problem go on for way too long. I live in Arizona. I am very upset with the law because it has impacted everyone. I feel that now everyone thinks Arizona is THE racist state. I completely disagree. Many people are upset with this law and sad because alot of our friends are moving out of this state. I think our governor is the racist one and makes Arizona overall look bad because of her actions.
