On the Medal of Honor in Iraq and Afghanistan

By Joe ‘Ragman’ Tarnovsky

It has been a point of contention that no living military personnel have been awarded the Medal of Honor in Iraq and Afghanistan since our Nation has sent these brave men and women into battle in those two wars. It is hard for me to believe, being a Vietnam Combat Veteran, that in Afghanistan and Iraq there is not a living soldier, sailor, marine or airman deserving of the military’s top award for valor. Since America has been at war in these two countries only six Medals of Honor have been awarded to our troops which have all been bestowed upon the recipient posthumously. Of these six recipients, three of these men jumped on live hand grenades to save the lives of their buddies that were in the immediate area.

For whatever reason the Pentagon and others that have failed to honor a living recipient that deserves the Medal of Honor in Afghanistan and Iraq, there is now a living soldier that has been recommended for that award but his name is not being released until a final decision has been made in regards to him getting the medal or not. The Pentagon stated this man saved the lives of a half a dozen men by running through a hail of enemy fire to engage the Taliban that were attacking his squad. This military action took place in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan in the fall of 2007.

If this man did what the Pentagon claims then he certainly deserves our Nation’s highest award for bravery, the Medal of Honor, and I think our society should demand that military officials go back and take another look at those individuals that received our Nation’s second highest award for heroism, the Navy Cross, Air Force Cross or the Army’s Distinguished Service Cross to see if some of these people were shortchanged from receiving the Medal of Honor because of personal or petty politics. It happens all the time with awards for gallantry in the military, google General Chesty Puller and you’ll read about a United States Marine that was awarded five Navy Crosses and one Army Distinguished Service Cross for intrepidness; however, the Medal of Honor was never bestowed upon this military hero and icon because some allege top Army officials and even President Eisenhower were upset about the disparaging comments Chesty Puller made about some Army units he thought did not fight admirably during the escape from the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.

Let’s hope that the Medal of Honor will be awarded to this mystery man and the military will take a second look at those awarded the Nation’s second highest award to see if anyone of them deserves the top award for daring under enemy fire. Our volunteer military should be given every consideration available because if it were not for them, we would see a mass of protests if the draft was ever reinstated and a flashback to the war protesters of the Vietnam War. War protester is really a misnomer for many carrying signs and burning their draft cards who were haranguing us with their pious rants and raves about being anti-war, when if fact, they were really protesting the draft and the very idea that they would have to put their country ahead of their own self-interests. I have not seen those draft protesters around since the Vietnam War, have you?

  1. By replacing Gen. Stanely McChrystal with another faild US military commander, Gen. David Petreaus, proved that he is a ‘copy-cat’ of the corrupt and failed Bush administration when it comes to America’s imperial ambitions or country’s foreign policy by blindly dancing to the tune of the powerful Jewish Lobby.

Gen. David Petreaus had failed miserably in erradicating resistance in Iraq even after applying Israeli barbarian military advisors to torture Iraqi Muslims and Christians. In his briefing to Congress, Petreaus had Islamic Iran for his military failure in Iraq. Professor James Petras in one of his article bestowed the honor of Zionism\’s military poodle upon Gen. Petreaus for someone who has Israeli interests more closer to his heart that his own country’s (US) interests.

John Stanton, an American author and crime investigator, wrote in May 2004 that both US and UK have long used the torture techniques perfected by Israelis on the Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners. Minister Farrakhan, also blamed Israelis for using their Nazi collaboration expeience in torturing (with photos) in Iraq.

Amy Goodman, the Jew host of ‘Democracy Now’ has written an article, titled We Cannot Afford War, saying:

“General Petraeus is a military man constantly at war with the facts,” began the MoveOn.org attack ad against Gen. David Petraeus back in 2007, after he had delivered a report to Congress on the status of the war in Iraq. George W. Bush was president, and MoveOn was accusing Petraeus of “cooking the books for the White House.” The campaign asked “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” on a full-page ad in The Washington Post. MoveOn took tremendous heat for the campaign, but stood its ground.

Three years later, Barack Obama is president, Petraeus has become his man in Afghanistan, and MoveOn pulls the critical Web content. Why? Because Bush’s first war, Afghanistan, has become Obama’s war, a quagmire. The U.S. will eventually negotiate its withdrawal from Afghanistan. The only difference between now and then will be the number of dead, on all sides, and the amount of (borrowed) money that will be spent.

The statistics for Afghanistan, Obama’s Vietnam, are surging. June, with at least 100 U.S. deaths, is the highest number reported since the invasion in 2001. 2010 is on pace to be the year with the highest U.S. fatalities. Similar fates have befallen soldiers from the other, so-called coalition countries. Petraeus is becoming commander not only of the U.S. military in Afghanistan, but of all forces, as the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan is run by NATO.

U.S. troops, expected to rise to 98,000 this year, far outnumber those from other nations. Public and political support in many of those countries is waning.

The whistle-blower website WikiLeaks.org, which received international attention after releasing leaked video from a U.S. attack helicopter showing the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians and a Reuters cameraman and his driver in Baghdad, has just posted a confidential CIA memo detailing possible public relations strategies to counter waning public support for the Afghan War. The agency memo reads: “If domestic politics forces the Dutch to depart, politicians elsewhere might cite a precedent for ‘listening to the voters.’ French and German leaders have over the past two years taken steps to preempt an upsurge of opposition but their vulnerability may be higher now.””

    • “Gen. David Petreaus had failed miserably in erradicating resistance in Iraq “….First off, I was in Iraq before and after his surge plan. Your comment is completely off-base and I would dare you to provide proof that suggest otherwise. I assure you it doesn’t exist.
Second, ” U.S. attack helicopter showing the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians and a Reuters cameraman and his driver.. “. I really don’t want to remark on such a comment, but the utter stupidity of it makes it necessary. Journalist were running around with a group of insurgents who previously fired on U.S. Forces. They were carrying cameras with tele-photo lens, which from a helicopter hovering several hundred meters above, can easily be mistaken for a weapon. Lesson learned here – don’t run around with a group of insurgents that are attacking U.S. Forces..too easy. If you are, at least have the common sense to wear something that would easily identify yourself as press.
Third, you seem to be one of those people that do nothing but sit around all day and watch the news and develop off-the-wall theories that utterly obsurd. Unless you’ve been there, how bout you just sit back and keep your mouth shut. GEN Petraeus and GEN McChrystal have served their country with honor, which I’m willing to bet is more than you have ever done. War is war, it’s not clean, it’s not easy, but sometimes it’s inevitable. If you think you can do better, get off the blogs, get off your ass, and by all means, do so.

P.S. Not edited for grammar, so take your best shot.

  2. Good article, and how true about those Vietnam era draft protesters, some of them no doubt now in positions of power in Washington, sending our troops to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq. Isn’t it odd, too, that those neocons screaming for us to attack Iran are so obviously among those least likely to have served in the military, and of those neocons young enough to serve, among the least capable and willing to serve. What kind of insanity are we witnessing when Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham have the audacity to call for a war against Iran, or anywhere? Maybe Lindsey Graham could join a canine team and bring his two Shih Tzus with him. Seeing him in drag walking two Shih Tzus would scare an army from the field.

  4. Marine Sergeant Major Brad Kasal was awarded the Navy Cross for actions that in my view were very deserving of the Medal of Honor. Many of you may recall the widely published iconic photo of him being assisted out of a house in Fallujah by two of his Marines. Then First Sergeant Kasal still grasped his 9MM pistol in his hand, walking as best he could with a comrade supporting him on each arm, in spite of the fact that he was very badly injured and bloodied by having absorbed enemy small arms fire and shrapnel from a grenade that was thrown at one of his downed Marines. The bad guys were on the second floor, firing down at Kasal as he shielded his fallen and trapped comrade by placing his body between the grenade and his Marine.

Kasal was hospitalized for the better part of a year and through sheer grit and determination was able to recover well enough to return to active duty. Read his book “My Men are my Heroes” and you’ll know the story of Brad Kasal.

Far too many cowardly politicians are afraid of alienating their anti-war, anti-military constituents by approving the Medal of Honor to a living recipient. A recipient who then becomes a walking/talking reminder of the war….probably bringing a positive light to the war as well…and that is something these moral mice do not want. So they turn a blind eye to combat heroism that without a doubt is worthy of this nation’s highest honor. That kind of disrespect for the extreme sacrifices that Sergeant Major Kasal and others have made in the defense of freedom is unforgivable.

Kasal’s case needs to be re-opened. I wrote the White House last year about this. They responded with a letter advising me that the President doesn’t have such authority; that those kinds of decisions are up to the Secretary of Defense. I say BS. The President needs only to make a phone call and the case gets re-opened. All they did in response to my letter was pass the buck. I’d like to have a President that believes in the old adage; “The Buck Stops Here”. The folks who’re running the show in DC now, beginning at the White House, are made of Teflon. “Pass the buck and blame the other guy” is their motto. They wouldn’t recognize moral or physical courage if it came up and bit them on the butt. They don’t know how to deal with such deep subjects.

    Dave Winnett
    Captain, USMC (Ret.)

    • Yo, knucklehead, the “bad guys” in Iraq are actually defending themselves from aggression by a bunch of deluded morons like Kasal.

The war against Iraq is not about “defense of freedom”; rather, it’s an illegal, immoral, pointless and stupid Zionist crusade. It’s destroying America as sure as it’s destroying the victim countries.

I hope that clears things up for you.

      • Joe 'Ragman' Tarnovsky

Dave, I think the knucklehead is Nelson and if you want to go in as partners, I’ll contribute half the money to get him a one-way ticket out of America! Let me know, Dave?
