CNN Senior International Correspondent Ben Wedeman Smeared by Israeli Lobby

Phil Weiss notes that another of the Dirty Tricks divisions of the Israel lobbies in the U.S., CAMERA (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America), has denounced CNN´s Ben Wedeman for retweeting a post of mine on Turkey-Israel relations.
By the way, I am particularly proud of that posting, which examines the political economy of “re-Ottomanization” and Turkey´s emergence as a significant and independent player in the Middle East in the past decade. I haven´t seen a similar analysis elsewhere, of the way in which Turkish external trade intersects with its various policy initiatives.
Whenever a journalist is attacked for referencing an academic, it is an attempt to make that scholar´s work taboo and to forbid its public mention. It would be perfectly all right for an advocacy group to say “In that blog posting, Cole gets the Turkish economy and its impact on relations with Israel wrong for reasons X, Y and Z.¨” But CAMERA did not engage with my substantive points. They simply propagandized.
CAMERA wrote,
“Cole’s article claimed: “[Israel's] isolation derives from Israeli policies, of illegal blockades … and systematic land theft and displacement of occupied civilians under its control, along with aggressive wars on neighbors, which target infrastructure and civilians and are clearly intended to keep neighbors poor and backward.” In other words, Cole and Wedeman promote the argument that Israelis send their sons and daughters to war not for the country’s security and preservation, but out of sheer malice. The Six-Day War, according to this view, did not stem from Egyptian acts of war and threats of annihilation. “
But the article was not about 1967. It was about now. The reference was obviously to Lebanon and Gaza. Moreover, Mr. Wedeman specifically pointed to my comments on Israel-Turkish relations as what he found interesting, and did not anyway say I was right about everything. He certainly said nothing about the 1967 war (nor did I in that posting)! Yet CAMERA has invented such a statement and then damned him with it falsely.
Wedeman has risked his life to cover the Middle East for us for many years and has long experience of the region on the ground. The CAMERA offices are not filled with similar people and they have no idea what they are talking about most of the time. They have no standing to go after Wedeman. All they are doing is trying to mark him with a taboo (me), which is a fundamentally undemocratic tactic. Liberal democracy is about open discussion and substantive debate, not about saying “Voltaire cannot be quoted in the press because he was a harsh critic of the Christian Church.” That is the form of CAMERA´s discourse, and it is against everything the Founding Generation of Americas stood for.
CAMERA is not in fact an organization devoted to fairness in journalism. It incorrectly and dishonestly maintains that only the Carter administration ever said that Israeli colonization of the Palestinian West Bank is illegal. Its members also mounted a covert and conspiratorial attempt to edit all Wikipedia articles to slant them toward a rightwing Zionist perspective, and they were banned from Wikipedia when the plot was outed. The organization occasionally succeeds in correcting errors, but only in the same way that a fanatical Khomeinist would easily be able to find and correct errors in US journalism about the Islamic Republic of Iran. It isn´t that ideologues want fairness– they want to impose their blindered narrative on everyone else. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
The insidious damage that CAMERA and other such far rightwing organizations do to the United States of America is incalculable. They try to get journalists fired for not being as fanatical and narrow-minded as themselves, and they often succeed. We do not know their full impact because such decisions are taken behind closed doors by cowardly editors or corporate middle managers.
By accusing Mr. Wedeman of saying that all Israeli wars have been aggressive in character, when he said no such thing, CAMERA is functioning in his regard just as Andrew Breitbart did to Shirley Sherrod. Selective editing of texts and videos, innuendo, framing statements unfairly, trying to make certain authors taboo, and other such dirty tricks are the bread and butter of the far right, because they do not have truth on their side to begin with.
Luckily, in this case CAMERA over-reached and as far as I can tell nobody cares what they think about my analysis of Israel-Turkish relations or about Mr. Wedeman´s citation of it. Nobody should care what they think of anything else, and should be doubly careful when they accuse journalists in future of getting some fact wrong about Israel, because they have repeatedly shown themselves dishonest.

Cole is himself as guilty of the unfair categorization and guilt by innuendo as his accusers in CAMERA. To suggest that the “far right,” whatever that’s supposed to encompass, is behind the obviously leftist, totalitarian tactics of the neocons calling the shots under Bush and Obama is the kind of demagoguery he cynically denounces. Maybe he should read Chronicles Magazine now and then to see that the intellectual heirs to America’s conservative tradition are anything but supporters of the neocons and their treason against the American people.

Hey, stop twisting the truth. Juan Cole is a respected and serious scholar who respects facts. Camera is a propaganda organization. Camera constantly lies in order to smear those who criticize the crimes of the so called state of Israel. It acts as it was a watchdog of a totalitarian government and needs to be exposed for what it is. It’s simply a propaganda organization which tries to hide Israeli crimes from the rest of the world and particularly and particularly in the USA.

On September 11, it wasn’t as clear to me who did 9-11. I suggested anti-globalists, anarchists, organized crime involving high finance, or an Israeli “frame-up” ( I did not yet know the word “false-flag.”) However I did see as early as Netyanyahu — who in an interview in Israel on the day of the attack, that the effect of the terrorist event would be “very good for Israel.”
I too, after seeing the capital that Wolfowitz was making out of the event, could see clearly what Netyanyahu meant: September 11 got Ariel Sharon out of a very unpopular spot his murderous and inhuman intifada policies against Palestine and Lebanon — were getting him. I also noted that Wolfowitz, Perle and others were very quick in blaming Osama bin Laden and in concluding that Saddam Huessein’s regime would have to be taken down. A recently-revealed tape has shown Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, discussing ways to undermine the Oslo Accords and calling the United States “easy” to manipulate.
The video was filmed in 2001, apparently without Netanyahu’s knowledge, during a meeting with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. It aired on Friday night on Israel’s Channel 10, and several translations have been posted online.
At one point on the tape, Netanyahu threatens a “broad attack” against the Palestinian Authority.
“The main thing, first of all, is to hit them. Not just one blow, but blows that are so painful that the price will be too heavy to be borne,” Netanyahu said. “A broad attack on the Palestinian Authority.”
The tape was shot during the early stages of the second intifada, when violence between Israelis and Palestinians was escalating. Netanyahu was speaking with settlers who lost family members to Palestinian attacks.
Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister at the time, had recently deployed additional Israeli troops in the West Bank.
Undermining the Oslo Accords
Netanyahu – who did not hold political office when the recording was made – was dismissive of the United States, calling it easily manipulated.
“I know what America is,” Netanyahu said. “America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won’t get in the way.”
Netanyahu also spoke extensively about undermining the Oslo Accords, the agreement signed in 1993 which set a framework for future Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
The Oslo Accords specified that Israel would be allowed to keep “military zones” in the West Bank in any future agreement with the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu told the settlers he would use that loophole to retain large portions of Palestinian territory.
“I’m going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the ’67 borders,” he said.
“How do we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I’m concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone.”
In the recording, Netanyahu described Bill Clinton – the former US president who helped to negotiate the accords – as “radically pro-Palestinian”.

. . . The long history of bipartisan Congressional support for Israel led former Secretary of State James Baker to call the Congress “The Little Knesset” after Israel’s Knesset (parliament) in Jerusalem. Congress’s embarrassing and unpatriotic display of allegiance to a foreign country that is dependent on American largesse and support is the unknown scandal to the American people.
With the media’s strong, biased and sympathetic portrayal of Israel while simultaneously denying any opposing view of Israel or human pictures and stories of the endless suffering of Palestinians, its no wonder that we the American people are so unaware of the true face of Israel. Thus shockingly but not surprisingly only 4 % of the American people are aware of Israel’s 34 year brutal military occupation of the Palestinian people.
Only at times of war and threat upon the U.S. does our Senate ever exhibit the strong bipartisanship support of America it regularly provides Israel. Despite our current crisis in airline security, Congressional political bickering continued for weeks between Republicans and Democrats placing American lives at risk while foreign aid to Israel was quick and automatic (about $6 Billion), even at a time the Congress is telling us of budget deficits and lack of money for the unemployed American workers.
As an American, I am outraged at the blind historical allegiance our Senators have provided Israel while they neglect many of our pressing domestic issues such as airline security, Social Security and Medicare Reform, Education Reform, Health Insurance for needy Americans, Money for Dilapidated Schools, and Prescription Coverage for our Elderly. Our Congress operates on the premise that most Americans are disinterested in foreign policy thus they have a vacuum to provide Israel with blank checks and our latest F-16 fighter jets that Israel uses to kill Palestinian civilians. They depend on our media to keep us uninformed and distracted with Sports, Harry Potter, and scandals.
And guess what? Newt Gingrich has been tagged to be your GOP presidential candidate in 2012 — possibly to ensure reelection of Obama — as “Manchurian” McCain and Ron “Interruptis” Paul ensured his victory in 2008.
I know Israel and Zionist dual-citizenship Jews were behind 9-11. I also know that Newt Gingrich was on the Defense Policy Board with Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Douglas Feith and Henry Kissinger at the Pentagon in the months leading up to the September 11 false-flag terrorism. By far the most damaging impact of the subversive activies of CAMERA (in line w. JEWS ARE THE WORST “Hate Crime” offenders of all. Thousands of “Hate Crimes” have been committed by the State of Israel. And now the latest “Hate Crime” has been perpetrated by an entire city in Israel: the burning of hundreds of copies of the New Testament.
This “Hate Crime” was committed by a multitude of Jewish religious school students in the city of Or Yehuda adjacent to Tel Aviv on May 20 2008.
The burning of the New Testaments took place in response to an order by the Mayor, Uzi Aharon Here. The mayor went through the city in a loud speaker car calling on the Jewish youth to retrieve and burn the New Testaments given to Ethiopian Jews in the city by Christian missionaries Here.
“I certainly do not denounce the burning of the booklets“ Aharon told Associated Press. And in a radio interview Aharon defended his actions calling the New Testament bonfire: “purging the evil among us.”
The Jewish Anti Defamation League (ADL) having convinced 45 States to enact “Hate Crime Laws” defines a Hate Crime as: “a crime motivated by a bias.” Certainly the Jews are guilty. But where is the ADL’s condemnation? Nothing doing. Because Jews couldn’t care less about “Hate Crimes” unless it serves their own selfish interests.
HATE CRIMES BY JEWS AGAINST CHRISTIANS
ON MARCH 21 2008 the teenage son of a Christian missionary was seriously wounded when a package bomb delivered to the family’s West Bank home went off in his hands Here. The bomb was delivered in one of the gift baskets Jews typically exchange on the Purim holiday occurring at the time.
Amiel Ortizi, 15 years old, was the recipient of the bomb. He is the son of Reverend David Ortiz, a Christian missionary who leads a Christian congregation in Ariel, a West Bank Jewish settlement town. “He’s in serious condition and hooked up to a respirator with shrapnel all over his body,” Dr Efrat Har-Lev of Beilinson Hospital told news reporters Here.
Most of Amiel’s internal organs were severely injured from the blast and he has burns all over his tender youthful body Here. The Israeli government continues to be indifferent to the crime.
In another recent “Hate Crime” perpetrated by Israeli Jews, 2 mayors in the West Bank were victims of car bombs by Israeli Jewish settlers Here. Bassam Shaka’a, the mayor of Nablus, had both legs amputated. And Karim Khalaf, the mayor of Ramallah, lost a foot. The case against the criminal Jewish settlers was dismissed because of “general civil unrest in the area.”
