Paul Krugman on the ADL: “Shameful — and stupid”
- One thing I thought Jews were supposed to understand is that they need to be advocates of universal rights, not just rights for their particular group -
If it were not for Frank Rich and Paul Krugman, many Americans wonder, could they have made it through the last nine years?
Here’s Krugman on the ADL’s “counterproductive to the healing process” imbecility:
Outside my usual beat, but the statement from the Anti-Defamation League opposing the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero is truly shocking. As Greg Sargent says, the key passage — it’s a pretty short statement — is this one:
Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right.
Translation: some people will feel bad if this thing is built, and we need to take these feelings into account, even though proponents “have every right to build at this site.”
So let’s try some comparable cases, OK? It causes some people pain to see Jews operating small businesses in non-Jewish neighborhoods; it causes some people pain to see Jews writing for national publications (as I learn from my mailbox most weeks); it causes some people pain to see Jews on the Supreme Court. So would ADL agree that we should ban Jews from these activities, so as to spare these people pain? No? What’s the difference?
One thing I thought Jews were supposed to understand is that they need to be advocates of universal rights, not just rights for their particular group — because it’s the right thing to do, but also because, ahem, there aren’t enough of us. We can’t afford to live in a tribal world.
But ADL has apparently forgotten all that. Shameful — and stupid.
Update: Times staff briefly removed the link to the ADL statement, because it seemed to be dead — but it was apparently just a case of an overloaded server, and I’ve put it back.

Shameful, ignorant and cowardly. The thing that makes the ACLU effective, and the thing that makes the Bill of Rights so inspired is that they guarantee rights regardless of how you feel about the individual or the group involved. We have been descending into a maelstrom of tribalism and intolerance, and to oppose the establishment of a religious institution that does not present a clear and present danger or violate laws in other ways — The Father Pedobear Institute for Young People by the Archdiocese, the Holy Roller Snakehandler Institute for the breeding of Vipers — is absurd. And, to do it based on people feeling bad is to fall into the same trap that ensnared the terrorists. Remember, Bin Laden’s primary complaint against the United States was our presence in Saudi Arabia. We made him feel pain by our presence on ground he held holy. Does the ADL and the various bigots involved in this want Ground Zero to be our Mecca? The Pentagon our Medina? A field in Pennsylvania our Dome of the Rock? They don’t get it…

What inspired me to join the US Marines in 1965 was the American ideology of freedom as defined in our history. American freedoms and our liberty are not in our buildings or piece of real estate.
It is the ideal lived out with imperfections that binds America together. An idealistic idea that all men are created equal. Even Muslims! To hate Muslims is to hate Jews. To hate Jews it is to hate Catholics. To hate Catholics it is to hate Baptists and so on.
America is not about hating and separation from each other it is about one nation held together with the hope that we all can live together in peace. This is what those people on Normandy and Iwo Jima fought so hard for.
Greetings Bill,
I agree with you.
When the USA invaded Normandy, our national motto was E PLURIBUS UNUM – from many one. This was an inclusive motto. A country for everyone. During McCarthyism they changed it to In God We Trust – a divisive motto. This is unconstitutional and unAmerican.
Shepherds are for sheep,

It’s interesting to note that the ADL was founded in 1913, the same year our treasonous Congress “sold out” to alien interests and signed the Federal Reserve Act.
Furthermore, take note of the ADL’s tax status: 501(c)(3). WHAT HUBRIS!!!
If you click on “donate”, the above will be confirmed. I resisted the “temptation” to do so. It is interesting to read where the dollars go…”anti-bullying material”…what hubris.
Oh, by the way, an enlightening read: “The Ugly Truth About The ADL” by the Editors of Executive Intelligence Review. First published in 1992, fifth printing in 1994. Library of Congress Catalogue Number: 92-075810.
ALIPAC Issues Advisory on MIAC and SPLC, ADL
Infowars
April 3, 2009
The following is a press release issued by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC:
Withdrawn Missouri MIAC Documents Leads to Advisory on SPLC
Contact: Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC)
WilliamG@alipac.us, (866) 703-0864
March 26, 2009
ALIPAC is issuing a national advisory to all local, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies and officers, along with all DHS Fusion Centers, a warning against any reliance upon faulty and politicized research issued by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and Anti Defamation League (ADL).
A national scandal emerged in Missouri, after their MIAC Fusion Center issued an eight page document which made many false claims. The documents attempted to politicize police and cast suspicion on millions of Americans. The ‘Missouri Documents’, as they came to be called, listed over 32 characteristics police should watch for as signs or links to domestic terrorists, which could threaten police officers, court officials, and infrastructure targets.
Police were instructed to look for Americans who were concerned about unemployment, taxes, illegal immigration, gangs, border security, abortion, high costs of living, gun restrictions, FEMA, the IRS, The Federal Reserve, and the North American Union/SPP/North American Community. The ‘Missouri Documents’ also said potential domestic terrorists might like gun shows, short wave radios, combat movies, movies with white male heroes, Tom Clancey Novels, and Presidential Candidates Ron Paul, Bob Barr, and Chuck Baldwin!
The Southern Poverty Law Center was cited as a research source for the ‘Missouri Documents’. Furthermore, the attempt of these documents to cast suspicion of violent and life threatening behavior on millions of Americans who are concerned about these issues is consistent with the regularly released political materials of both the SPLC and ADL.
Since the SPLC was listed as a source in the MIAC Missouri Documents, ALIPAC sent a letter of inquiry to the Missouri Governor Jay Nixon on March 20, 2009 asking for more specific sourcing information.
“When many of us read these Missouri Documents we felt that the false connections, pseudo research, and political attacks found in these documents could have been penned by the SPLC and ADL,” said William Gheen of ALIPAC. “We were shocked to see credible law enforcement agencies disseminating the same kind of over the top political propaganda distributed by these groups.”
Colonel James F. Keathley, Superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a letter of response to ALIPAC and other sources on March 25-26, which states that the Missouri militia documents are being withdrawn, more oversight will be applied to future releases, the Missouri Documents do not meet the high quality standards expected from the MIAC, and that “certain subsets of Missourians will not be singled out inappropriately in these reports for particular associations”.
FOX Radio Network is reporting that Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder (R-MO) has asked that Missouri Public Safety Director John Britt be placed on administrative leave. The report also says Kinder has issued a public apology to Presidential candidates Ron Paul, Bob Barr, and Chuck Baldwin.
ALIPAC would like to advise all media sources, law enforcement officers and agencies, that the ADL and SPLC are political organizations, with stated political goals and agendas which are contrary to the candidates, political parties, and millions of Americans besmirched by the MIAC documents.
While both the ADL and SPLC actively market themselves and seek roles as advisers to law enforcement and the media, both groups regularly engage in political tactics like those observed in the now withdrawn Missouri Documents. Materials from one or both organizations contributed to this scandal.
“In the past, these groups have served a helpful role in America by providing information about racist and potentially violent groups like the KKK and Neo Nazis,” said William Gheen. “Unfortunately, their mission has drifted into political efforts to paint almost any American or group who opposes their broader political agendas as being associated with racist or potentially violent groups just like what we saw in these scandalous MIAC documents in Missouri.”
ALIPAC hopes that future scandals can be avoided by issuing this advisory and promoting awareness of the faulty information distributed to police and media in America by the Anti Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center to prevent future scandals of this nature.

( PROVIDED/SOURCED BY ADL/SPLC)
YOU SHALL KNOW THEM & UNDERSTAND THEM BY WHAT THEY
HATE & ARE INTOLERANT OF.
The report was distributed by the Missouri Information Analyzes Center (MIAC). The report instructs the Missouri police to be on the lookout for supporters displaying bumper stickers and other paraphernalia associated with the Constitutional, Campaign for Liberty, and Libertarian political parties. The report said that supporters of this independent, or third parties, are “militia influenced terrorists” and opposed to the North American Union and the New World Order. According to the MIAC, opposition to world government, NAFTA, federalization of the states, and restrictive gun laws are a potential threat to the police. The report reveals that opposition to any of the following, risks someone being classified as a potential “domestic terrorist”: The New World Order, The United Nations, Gun Control, The violation of Posse Comitatus, The Federal Reserve, The Income Tax, The Ammunition Accountability Act, The North American Union, Universal Service Program, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). And…Abortion on demand or Illegal Immigration. Again, if you oppose any of the previously listed, or if you supported Ron Paul – Republican ’08 Presidential Candidate, Bob Barr – Libertarian ’08 Presidential Nominee, or Chuck Baldwin – Constitution Party ’08 Presidential Nominee. You are being labeled a “domestic terrorist”, according to the MIAC.

The Last Bastion of American Morality Is Under Assault

The morality of the American people now resides, insecurely, in the Presbyterian Church. Every other institution of American society — the evangelical churches, the bought-and-paid-for American media, both houses of Congress, the executive branch, both political parties, the corporations, the financial sector, the universities — all support Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians. Only the Presbyterians dissent.
The genocide is cloaked behind the propaganda that no Palestinians lived in Palestine until after the Israelis arrived, that all Palestinians are terrorists who want to murder innocent peace-loving Israelis, and that the terrorist Palestinians are armed by the few remaining Muslim governments that so far have escaped becoming American puppet states.
The solution, of course, is for the few remaining independent countries in the Middle East to be brought by force under US and Israeli hegemony.
The Presbyterian Church, as it is the only US organization that is not under the Israel Lobby’s suzerainty, is included among the independent institutions that must be brought to heel.
The Presbyterian Church, which alone in America has a moral conscience, has been disturbed for some time by the Israeli/American policy of Palestinian extermination. In violation of international law and under the protection of US diplomacy and America’s UN veto, Israel has evicted Palestinians from their homes and villages since the Israeli occupation of the West Bank in 1967 and even before. The remaining small parts of the West Bank in which Palestinians still reside have been turned by Israel into ghettos cut off from the rest of Palestine.
The Presbyterians, being meek Christians, have only mild criticisms of Israel, which are packaged together in the church’s Middle East Study Committee’s report with the Presbyterians’ commitment to Israel’s continued existence and to “our American Jewish Friends.” The Presbyterian report even disavows divestment from Caterpillar, the US company that supplies Israel with the machines that destroy Palestinian homes, thus driving Palestinians from their lands so that zionist settlers can confiscate their properties. It was a Caterpillar bulldozer that killed the American Rachel Corrie who was protesting Israel’s destruction of Palestinian homes.
The Presbyterian report expresses concern that “the window of opportunity for an end to the occupation and the viability of a two-state solution is rapidly closing.” The Presbyterians fear that violence begets violence, and that the two sides are sliding into wanton willful murder of one another in violation of God’s commandments.
The Presbyterian document states: “We do affirm the legitimacy of Israel as a state, but consider the continuing occupation of Palestine (West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem) to be illegitimate, illegal under international law, and an enduring threat to peace in the region. Furthermore, we recognize that any support for that occupation weakens the moral standing of our nation internationally and our security.”
For Israel and the vast media and American political apparatus that Israel controls, this was too much. Israel is never guilty of anything. Only Palestinians are guilty. Anyone who criticizes Israel is anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists who want a second Holocaust.
The extreme Zionist Jerusalem Post; the moderate American Jewish newspaper, the Forward, and even a Mormon blog declared war on the Presbyterian Christians.
Israel, of course, denies that there is any illegal occupation of Palestine despite this being the finding of every country, the UN, and even Israel’s American protector, the US government. The Jerusalem Post accuses the Presbyterians of expressing “contempt for Israel” attempting “to delegitimize Israel” and justifying “Palestinian terror against the Jewish state.”
And there you have it. Any person or organization that is not all apologies for Israel’s dispossession of Palestinians from their homes, villages, and lands, any person or organization that does not accept that 5-year old Palestinian children shot down in the streets by Israeli soldiers or zionist settlers were terrorists about to bring down the Israeli state, anyone who does not genuflect before the Israeli line on everything is an anti-semite who wants to renew the Holocaust and exterminate the Jewish people.
The Rabbis in every American community will buttonhole the Presbyterian ministers and ask them to explain why they are anti-semites and beat their wives. The Presbyterian General Assembly, which meets in July, will again be intimidated, as it was previously, and vote down the recommendations in the church’s report on the Israeli/Palestinian issue.
The weak forces of morality will again be defeated by the Israelis, and the extermination of the Palestinians will continue.

Oliver Stone: Apology #2 to ADL
New York, NY, July 28, 2010 … In response to the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) statement saying his initial apology was insufficient, especially his comments about the power of the Jewish lobby, filmmaker Oliver Stone communicated directly with Abraham H. Foxman, the League’s National Director.
He said, “I do agree that it was wrong of me to say that Israel or the pro-Israel lobby is to blame for America’s flawed foreign policy. Of course that’s not true and I apologize that my inappropriately glib remark has played into that negative stereotype.”
Mr. Foxman welcomed the apology, saying, “I believe he now understands the issues and where he was wrong, and this puts an end to the matter.”
