Gulf War Illness Proof of Real Physical Damage

Gulf War 90-91 Veterans are the Ghost Veterans not seen in large numbers during Veterans Day and the answer is because they are ill and need urgent attention!  The doctors at the VA need educational programs on this situation past tense.  For twenty years the veterans of the gulf war 1990-91 have come to the doors of the VA to receive less than adequate care and this is totally unacceptable!  This is not about compensation alone but more so about health care and treatment answers!  Their neurocognitive executive functions are damaged and this is not AGE Related!  There are visual problems that need attention.  There are neurological, endocrine, immunological problems that have gotten worse over twenty years.

As the holiday season approaches for this group of veterans a dire need is identified.  Help is needed.  The Gulf War Veterans want Dr Haley’s work at UTSW Medical funded, we need the next phases of his research to show the damage done to other cohorts of the Gulf War Veterans 90-91.  We need a massive educational program for all health care providers throughout the VA.  Where is the plan?  Where are the centers of excellence for gulf war veterans care?  We need them in all areas of the country to meet the demand that has lanquished for 20 years!

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Potentially more than 100,000 US troops may have been exposed to the organophosphate chemical warfare agents sarin (GB) and cyclosarin (GF) when a munitions dump at Khamisiyah, Iraq was destroyed during the Gulf War (GW) in 1991. Although little is known about the long-term neurobehavioral or neurophysiological effects of low-dose exposure to GB/GF in humans, recent studies of GW veterans from the Devens Cohort suggest decrements in certain cognitive domains and atrophy in brain white matter occur individuals with higher estimated levels of presumed GB/GF exposure. The goal of the current study is to determine the generalizability of these findings in another cohort of GW veterans with suspected GB/GF exposure.

METHODS: Neurobehavioral and imaging data collected in a study on Gulf War Illness between 2002 and 2007 were used in this study. We focused on the data of 40 GW-deployed veterans categorized as having been exposed to GB/GF at Khamisiyah, Iraq and 40 matched controls. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain were analyzed using automated and semi-automated image processing techniques that produced volumetric measurements of gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and hippocampus.

RESULTS: GW veterans with suspected GB/GF exposure had reduced total GM and hippocampal volumes compared to their unexposed peers (p< or =0.01). Although there were no group differences in measures of cognitive function or total WM volume, there were significant, positive correlations between total WM volume and measures of executive function and visuospatial abilities in veterans with suspected GB/GF exposure.

CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that low-level exposure to GB/GF can have deleterious effects on brain structure and brain function more than decade later.

  1. As a DS/DS vet I can give you first had account of Neuro Problems encountered upon return, aside form the Short-Term Memory Loss. In the 2003-04 time frame I began to develop what was termed to be partial-complex seizure activity. I suspect it began a lot earlier with the short-term memory loss, and progressed with time. The VA Docs dismissed my claims. I took it upon my self, and my insurance and sought other medical treatment at the Massachusetts General Hospital. After consults with the Chiefs of Neuro Surgery,& Neurology in 2007, I under went a Right Temporal Lobectomy. They removed a small portion of my Right Temporal Lobe, and up to this point in time I have never had another problem. I was with the MAARNG at the time of war assigned to the 1st Inf Div. We were within 5km of Khamisiyia at the time of the ammo dump destruction. The VA has denied my claim up to this point in time. I believe this is our generations Agent Orange Battle

        • same here, have not seen a neurologist as of yet. History repeats itself just like AGENT ORANGE. Here we go again. Keep up the fight.

  2. Proper TREATMENT is the key! Not drugs that only address the symptoms and cause problems themselves, but natural herbs and supplements that address the cause at its root. That is the only way we will get better.
I know as I have been treating myself naturally for a couple of years and have improved; I was not even able to get out of bed without help the end of 2008, now I do more than that. While I am not 100% better, I am improving and so is my quality of life.

Too many people do not give natural treatment the same chance they give drugs. You did not get sick overnight, so you will not get better over night, but you CAN get better. The choice, however, is up to you!

  3. This study should be published in the VA-Gulf War Review. Memory Problems and Brain Fog most (VAMC) PCP will send vet/patient only to Mental Health Clinic

  4. I enlisted in the Navy in 1984. While my Company and our sister Company were recieving our required innoculations and shots they seperated my Company from our sister and told we were going to get a trial vaccine for what was called the “crud”. Having people from all over the country coming together, there was always sickness that went through the Company the first week. At 18-19 y/o I didn’t think to ask any questions. We were all told to lean on the wall and relax our legs , and then we were given a shot from a pnuematic gun.
We were then made to run in place for 15 min or so, to “get the fluids moving”.
Our sister Company did not recieve the extra shot.
The next day we all had golf ball sized hard spots where the shot was given, and had pain.Within the next couple days all of us were sick, but our sister Company had no more than usual.

After I got out of the Navy in 1988 I started having swelling and pain in my joints. I was treated for gout, but recieved no relief. The VA tested me for gout, lupus, RA,And whatever else they could think of, but no cause or relief was found.
I have since read a book called “Vaccine A” that desribed the effects of squaline on the human body, and they all were familiar. I haven’t found anyone who knew (or admitted to knowing) anything about my problem at the VA.
My Company # was 149-84, and I enlisted on May 22nd 1984.Boot Camp was at Great Lakes IL.
    Thanks for letting me vent.
