WE THOUGHT WE WERE FREE

Slowly but surely the fear driven Orwellian noose closes as civil liberties and freedoms which were once taken for granted are gradually restricted or ended and always for the same reason ~ National Security

George Orwell’s 1984 revealed that the key to social control is a never ending war, such as Afghanistan; for it keeps the masses fearful, silenced and obedient as there freedom and civil liberties gradually vanish.

In that regard, as I watch the TSA security fiasco unfold as well as George W Bush’s book tour where he rationalizes his illegal war and economic rape of Iraq as well as justifying torture as a means to this criminal end ~ I think of Milton Mayer’s classic “They Thought They Were Free”  (The Germans 1933 – 1945).

For German exceptionalism in the 1930’s was really not too different, in many ways, than American exceptionalism in the last decade and very likely headed for the same disastrous fate.

Mayer’s book describes the slow but sure seduction of the people as their liberties, freedoms and moral values were gradually stripped away by Hitler’s fascist government while waving the flag of national security and patriotism.

THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE – Pg. 166 / 167

But Then It Was Too Late ~ “What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if the people could not understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

And their sense of identification with Hitler, their trust in him, made it easier to widen this gap and reassured those who would otherwise have worried about it … this separation of government from people, this widening of the gap, took place so gradually and so insensibly, each step disguised (perhaps not even intentionally) as a temporary emergency measure or associated with true patriotic allegiance or with real social purposes. And all the crises and reforms (real reforms, too) so occupied the people that they did not see the slow motion underneath, of the whole process of government growing remoter and remoter.”

Apathy sets in with each step, as it most certainly has in America, and Mayer knowingly describes the consequences for Germany in the early 1930’s~

THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE – Pg 171

“In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D ~ and one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you.

The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in ~ your nation, your people ~ is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays.

But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed.

Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way… You have accepted things you would not have accepted five years ago, a year ago, things that your father, even in Germany, could not have imagined … Suddenly it all comes down, all at once.

You see what you are, what you have done, or, more accurately, what you haven’t done (for that was all that was required of most of us: that we do nothing).”

And that is Mayer’s main point ~ it is the spirit that dramatically changes when we accept if not condone the disintegration of our national moral values through illegal wars and occupations as well as crimes against humanity such as torture, secret renditions as well as intrusive full body scans and pat downs, which will soon be extended to trains, boats, schools and court houses.

What is the Cheney/Bush and now Obama/Biden administration afraid of?

They are obviously afraid of the Truth and, in particular, an informed public in possession of the truth.
We thought we were free but, in reality, like the Germans in the 30’s, we are being manipulated and conditioned by fear to slowly give up our rights, liberties and freedom ~ and all in the name of National Security.

If you’re not concerned, you’re on life support.

One reason that people don’t seem to recognize what’s going on is because it starts at the bottom first. You begin with the poor because they can’t fight back and because society has no interest in really helping the poor. Then, you go up the latter. The powerless first, the little guy second and on and on until everyone is under the same thumb of whoever wants the control. It started with our congress after this election. The government wants to make sure there isn’t a deficit on the following generation, but they don’t care that the generation is the first ones to feel it when unemployment is cut. And there don’t have to have death squads because they’ve robbed Social Security and now they’re going to cut the benefits and the medical. Most elderly won’t be able to buy their medications. It becomes eat or take my medicine. No it’s all stacked up. They got theirs and they got ours. Read the “Handmaidens Tale”. It has a wonderful step by step plan to take over the country.

The sheeple of America still believe they are free. They will still believe it when their neighbors, friends or family members are arrested and hauled off to the FEMA camps for permanent internment. They will still believe it when the government places TV cameras inside their homes. They will still believe it when the government invades, Iran, Pakistan, Yemen. They will still believe it when the price of food is so high they cannot afford a gallon of milk for their children. They will still believe it when their every move is monitored. They will still believe it when dissent is ruthlessly crushed and their children become spies for the regime.
They will still believe it because the mainstream media told them so.

The Brits still apply the term “democracy” to their national political system even though they are most monitored nation on earth and a boon to cctv manufacturers, so you have the right of it, sadly.

No free thinking country, not even the US, wanted the Zionist problem on their own doorstep. Little did the US know, that the Zionist parasite was destroying her from within..

It has become a jewish nirvana. Remember Russia in 1917-the best is yet to come

Freedom? LOL! Wasn’t that fallacy debunked back in the mid-80’s when Ronbo just said NO and gave us laws that threw due process out with the rest of that “trash” once called our “freedom”. It’s taken 25 years for many Americans to realize that their country is NO longer the land of the free but the home of the nave.

Money? Business? Yes! One of the best! Multinationals love this country so much that now, thanks to the Burrito Supreme Court, they are now considered legal people who can donate to political campaigns without limit! Amazing! Freedom for Corporations! Yes! People? No! Fight or Run for the Border!

Great article…spot-on and relevant. It is chilling to read the excerpts from “They Thought They Were Free” because it seems as if they could have been written about life in the USA circa 2001-2010.

Wondering if “Operation Paperclip” had anything to do with it.

    • Allen L Roland  November 28, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Unfortunately, much of the information surrounding Operation Paperclip is still classified.

I will know some of that information.
