Senate Repeals ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
WASHINGTON — The Senate on Saturday struck down the ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military, bringing to a close a 17-year struggle over a policy that forced thousands of Americans from the ranks and caused others to keep secret their sexual orientation.
By a vote of 65 to 31, with eight Republicans joining Democrats, the Senate approved and sent to President Obama a repeal of the Clinton-era law, known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a policy critics said amounted to government-sanctioned discrimination that treated gay and lesbian troops as second-class citizens.
Mr. Obama hailed the action, which fulfills his pledge to reverse the ban. “As commander in chief, I am also absolutely convinced that making this change will only underscore the professionalism of our troops as the best led and best trained fighting force the world has ever known,” Mr. Obama said in a statement after the Senate, on a 63-33 vote, beat back Republican efforts to block a final vote on the repeal bill.
The vote marked a historic moment that some equated with the end of racial segregation in the military.
It followed a comprehensive review by the Pentagon that found a low risk to military effectiveness despite greater concerns among some combat units and the Marine Corps. The review also found that Pentagon officials supported Congressional repeal as a better alternative than an court-ordered end.
Supporters of the repeal said it was long past time to end what they saw as an ill-advised practice that cost valuable personnel and forced troops to lie to serve their country.

Although I 100% support gays and their choice to serve in the military, don’t ask don’t tell was a wonderful policy. It allowed gays to support their country without fear of oppression. I actually had a few openly gay friends while serving and nobody was kicked out for it, but they sure as hell were treated like garbage.
I see many problems stemming from this. For one gays will need to have separate facilities. By that i mean showers, restrooms etc… I know the women i served with went through hell in a predominantly male career field, and the more feminine of the men were teased relentlessly. I see this only causing problems for current and future servicemen and women. The gay military members WILL be treated different by their superiors no matter what silly policy some halfwit comes down with.
Politicians need to learn they can’t make bills and wave a magic wand and everything is unicorns and rainbow kisses. Service members are not under the constitution as any of us trouble makers in the military know all to well…we are under the UCMJ. All the sexual acts are still punishable, especially the fun ones.
I think the gay men should have thier own facilities as well. For safety reasons. The gay women I wouldn’t be worried about for women are more tolerant of homosexuals then men. Usually less aggressive as well.
I just hope they don’t try to make this the first step in making everything co-ed. Men, women and gays all showering together. Gawd, what a mess that will be.

Most politicians care nothing for troop welfare to say nothing about destruction of the America’s enemies – the REAL mission of the military.
Military forces exist to destroy an enemy.
American politicians including the executive and legislative branches gleefully and as cowards grant our enemies sanctuary. They do appear fearful of making our enemies MAD at us. I am constantly amazed that we as a people do not vote the clowns out at every election. Islamic and other terrorists produce IED’s, plan attacks, rearm, refit, obtain replacements with impunity in Iran, Pakistan and other countries around the world. Our military is worn out folks, they are tired and there is not enough of them.
The legislative action described above is merely one more burden the grunt has to cope with. Weakness – as a nation will correct itself – when we REALLY go to war again, won’t it? The cowards will slime back under their rocks and the brave will step up as they always have. The cowards will march again when the next emergency is settled. (REMEMBER FOLKS – WE ARE NOT AT WAR – THE IRAQ AND AFGAN ISSUES ARE SIMPLY MAN CAUSED DISASTERS.)
The fools and traitors in Washington D.C. believe they can legislate combat effectiveness. Real military types will see the country through the foolish issues the politicians create – as they always have. Just once, once, one time I wish just a few of them could arrange to walk point.
