Sarah Palin Runs Over Rolling Thunder

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

WASHINGTON — One day after Sarah Palin announced her bus tour, a group sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend event she plans to attend said they never invited her.

“She wasn’t invited. We heard yesterday she came out with a press release she was coming to Rolling Thunder,” Ted Shpak, national legislative director of Rolling Thunder, told “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” Shpak is one of three members of Rolling Thunder’s current leadership who says he had no idea Palin was coming until it was posted on her website.

On Thursday, the former governor of Alaska and potential GOP presidential candidate announced her bus tour on her political action committee’s website,  The tour is to begin in Washington, D.C., where Palin plans to participate in the Sunday motorcycle rally sponsored by Rolling Thunder Inc., a group that raises awareness of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

“She’s not invited to speak. We’re not endorsing her … (but) we can’t stop her from coming to ride, if she wants to ride,” Shpak continued.

Organizers of Rolling Thunder say their guest speakers are Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Palin’s representatives say they were invited to Rolling Thunder – by a former board member who is emceeing the event.

Mike DePaulo tells NBC News he had a standing offer for her to ride with them from the Pentagon across the bridge to D.C. – and that he got a call from what he called “the Palin campaign” on Wednesday to see if they could take him up on it.  He coordinated it with a friend of his, Joe Fields, of the Alaska Veterans’ Advisory Council, who had worked with Palin when she was governor.

A spokeswoman for Rolling Thunder says they frequently invite celebrity guests to ride with them.

DePaulo says he has a permit for the Palin bus to be parked on Henry Bacon Drive near the Lincoln Memorial.  He acknowledges he didnt tell current leaders of the organization that she was coming, since they were already on the road.

When asked if Palin’s bus will be participating in the event, Shpak of Rolling Thunder Inc. responded, “Absolutely not.”

Shpak says Palin’s attendance “is a big distraction” and that his “phone has been ringing off the hook” ever since she announced her intention to attend the event.

“We’re not political. This is not a political event … Maybe she’s coming because she knows we have a half a million people in town and thinking she can start her [campaign]?” stated Shpak.

“We’re taking care of our issues and that’s why we’re here.”, a site dedicated to Sarah Palin reports the opposite and claims”Rolling Thunder Riders Praise Sarah Palin’s Participation in Rally” and calls Shpak a liar.

And so it goes with Sarah Palin, a polarizing force.

Palin was invited by Mike Depaulo.Palin is a Blue Star Mother & she was there because she wanted to be.
I’m sorry but her appearance promoted this event.Could it be that some are JEALOUS?
They should be happy she didn’t have a booth setup in THUNDER ALLEY cutting in their sells, making
money for themselves & not their pockets. How many people in National are profiting off the very cause
that they claim to raise awareness for?

  2. Barbara  May 30, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I rode yesterday in Rolling Thunder for the first time with my husband, who is a combat vet. I was amazed at the outpouring support that we had as; 1st we rode to the Pentagon in a very large group from one of the nearby dealerships and 2nd the support and the thank yous we received downtown. I have nothing against her if she was out there to ride and support the true reason we were all there, but while we were ALL out there sweating in the hot sun, where was she? What about the US Marine that saluted everyone of us as we drove by in dress uniform with a broken wrist? What she did is disgraceful and slaps the face of EVERY veteran.

I am a vet, though not a combat vet, I’m married to a combat vet and we are parents of 3, yes 3 servicemembers and I am proud and honored to have made that ride yesterday amongst all those other veterans.

I salute each and everyone of you. Thank you for ALL that you gave to this great nation.

I do not like Sara Palin. I do not think she represents me (I served for 23 years in the US Army) or any other veteran that I know. So she rode with the Rolling Thunder–she is a publicity hound. She is all about appearance, self, and adulation of self. Politics aside. Happy Memorial Day to all service members and former service members. I bow my head to honor those who gave all. That is what this day is about—to honor all those who gave all.

Earlaiman: Thank you for a great post. Yes, your earned the right to express your words and you did it in a colorful accurate description.

The quitter/liar showed up with her own camera crew this morning at the Rolling Thunders Event. That’s what she calls – just riding with them, one of thousands.

  5. Earlaiman  May 29, 2011 at 12:51 am

I once drove an eighteen wheeler nationwide in the US for two years, when I needed some fast money to build a boat and escape from that prison. And I learned a lot about hitchhikers.

She is not simply “riding with Rolling thunder” as the Leadership Member has said she is permitted to do, she is trying to hitch a ride on their wagon, a hitchhiker.

And, that is all she is, a hitchhiker. One who brings nothing to the truck or the truck driver who picks her up and takes her along, feeding her, sharing his cigarettes and coffee with her, and listening to her all day and are usually not worth the patience it takes to tolerate some air-headed twit like Sarah Palin in the cab all day.

Make no mistake about this one… she is a political truckstop whore, just like Nancy, Jane, Madelaine and Hillary, and she is more trouble than she is worth.

They guys at Rolling Thunder have done a wise thing, and rendered the US Public a public service by making it clear that, if she cannot be prevented from coming along, then at least she was not invited.

I’m also a Veteran of three of the US’s “finest wars” in twenty five years, with combat in two of them, which not only gives me a voice here, but demands that I peak my piece, controversial or not.

  6. Erica Stuart  May 28, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Am I the only person sick and tired of Sarah Palin? If it where not for the Media drooling at her every word Palin is just a rather primitive tribal woman from the beautiful but still wild Alaska. She is what old West women used to be. Nothing wrong with that but you can take the Country Back to those times, it is too late, we are too big and crowded, yes crowded. Instead of showing us every prison and in the USA and the story of its guest–reality show they call it, but cannot find any thing nice to show about the USA. So why not show the street of Beijing, India and other overpopulated nations to let us see what Crowded means and where we are headed. Nice if you like to rub elbow with a multitude as you try to make your way any where.

But what has slapped us in the face this week really has me and many other quite upset. Memorial Day coming up, first we get a US Congress putting down this Country and embarrassing this Nation by eulogizing 26 the PM of Israel who is a master story teller, tear brimming peddler of his nation Dreams he expect us to fulfill for him. No one in Congress told him we also had dreams that went to peaces thanks in great part to some of his compatriot and dual loyalty citizens we have here whose primary job is see to it we will finance their dream. Go on the Internet, we are the latest joke of the world and that did not go over very well here either. And for those of you who do not yet fully understand Obama he was not just saying to go back top the 67 lines, not physically any way, what he was saying that infuriated Netanyahu who is the creator of the settlement dream was simply “this time instead of bullying you way
into Palestinian land, try negotiating your swaps and start from the beginning”.

So much for that, but today I went to the shopping center looking for some nice white red and blue for my mail box. The drug stores did not have one flag or absolutely any thing red white white and blues, in one store the clerks asked me if it was for the fourth of July me, that did it and loudly reminded all who hear that there would be not fourth of July if it were not for Memorial Day. as I made my angry exit there was a fire truck there don’t ask me why but a told them if they could see what was happening to this country? And this is Republican Territory. Well. I calmed down when Trader Joe in my town shopping area had a big flag and lots of red white and blue decoration, so did the square. If our Congress has so little respect for this nation, and our Media so few programs to make us proud what can we expect from the mostly foreign management and staffing of our stores.
To all of our troops and Veterans my humble Thank you an there is a flag by my door and a tea shirt hanging that states “Freedom is Not Free”

E.S. => “Am I the only person sick and tired of Sarah Palin?”

T.V. => Thanks for your post, Erica. Unfortunately, you ARE the only person sick and tired of Sarah. 🙂 Get prepared to hear a lot more about her as Obama and his Democrats are trying everything to distract this beautiful country from their piss-poor, failed agendas and even worse plans.

T.V. great, great, great… grandson of Thomas Jefferson.

Erica Stuart: Enjoyed your post. Isn’t Trader Joe’s great. They treat their employees special and have a fantastic matching savings plan. My daughter got a job there in her early twenties and now she’s a stay at home mom for awhile. Thanks to Trader Joe’s.

Enjoy the weekend. CSPAN should have some good shows, they are online now.

Pray for our Military Families that make the greatest sacrifice and don’t forget the disaster victims. They will need a bipartisan Congress to help them rebuild and they will need all the help we can give them.

Much like most groups out there, the higher ups whine if their not the center of attention.

    • Jim  May 28, 2011 at 11:17 pm

So Jim in Arizona, wanna come up to my rolling Thunder Chapter and help us keep a current veteran family from being foreclosed on? Sound to me like all you do is get ego runs a running..cause we “quitely” get it done, with old and young members in a “association.” Where we have built two homeless vet shelters and countless solutions. And our homeless vets run this year which started here then went national is, but maybe thats not your ” cup of tea” being from Arizona and all. Sounds like reading your crap like your only idenitity is…your past still seeking some …”fame.”””””” vr lightfoot

    • Texas Vet  May 29, 2011 at 12:21 am

Jim: I just made a donation to Rolling Thunder Charities Inc. I’ve added you to my favorites. I did notice that Alaska was not listed as a Chapter Member?

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 2:07 am

jim in arizona: Why don’t you take a moment out of your important life and read about Ted Shpak, Army Vietnam Veteran. There is an excellent article about his accomplishment in the Pentagram. Google it.

You show nothing but disrespect in your childish remark “bunch of old whiners with nothing better to do”. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Check out how Ted Shpak has worked for decades to help his follow Vietnam Vets. I doubt you can top his hard-work.

So why don’t you just say your sorry and make a nice donation to Rolling Thunders and make one for the disaster victims while you out it. Yes, I’ve made two this week.

I don’t want to call you a liar but you should have checked your facts before you try to discredit the Rolling Thunders.

There is just something about your tone that causes me to question your military background. I have worked in the Defense Industry for years and you don’t ring true.

    • Jim In Arizona  May 30, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Chris…Who are you to question anyones service? Something special because you worked in the Defense Industry…I think not, I did my time in 68/69, worked hard after I got home, survived good times and bad, never asked anyone for anything. I’m entitled to my opinion, I gave it, get over it or have you forgotton what freedom is about.
Happy Memorial Day, and thanks to all for your service

  15. Eileen Fleming  May 28, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Sarah Palin is a tool for Zionism and a member of The New Apostolic Reformation- a religious movement of elites and regular people who ascribe to such things as geographic maps citing where demons reside and they seek to take control of communities and nations through large networks of ‘prayer warriors’ whose spiritual warfare is used to expel and destroy the ‘demons’ that they believe cause societal ills.

Once the territorial demons, witches, and generational curses are removed, these ‘born-again Christians’ believe they will take control of society!

May God Have Mercy on US and WAKE the USA UP asap!!!

Pathetic Alaskan grifter is all she is. Anyone that believes in Palin has an IQ that is around room temperature or colder.

    • Texas Vet  May 28, 2011 at 11:59 pm

Hey Boonie Rat — This Texas Vet is top MENSA. I guess what you really mean is that rooms can get really hot this time of the year in Texas. I don’t think you know what a true grifter is unless you look in your own urban cowboy boots. 🙂

  17. david A. White  May 28, 2011 at 1:04 pm

I’m not a Palin fan, but I would just as soon see her as that useless admiral and ass kissing cabinet member.

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 1:33 am

Are you referring to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, soon to be retired, and Adm. M. Mullen? Do you have any idea how devoted these two men are to our country. The hard work and sacrifices they have made to help keep us safe?

I sure would like to see you say that Sunday to some of the Vets.

I’ll show my respect to the men and women who have earned and deserve my respect.

You sound like a Palin supporter and you deserve her.

  18. mikemcguire  May 28, 2011 at 11:51 am

Palin’s problem is she “Can’t Understand Normal Thinking” !!!!! (look at the caps)

    • The Die Hard  May 29, 2011 at 5:51 am

      HAH! Good one.

  19. Liam  May 28, 2011 at 9:13 am

Palin is rolling in on a bus which solicits funds for her PAC, (Political Action Committee), and the bus with the advertisement on the side directing people to donate to her PAC will be sitting at the event? That’s got to be illegal.

  20. stewart  May 28, 2011 at 8:13 am

Well, Mr Joe Fields and Mike DePaulo have managed to take a historicaly POW-MIA event and turn it in to the Palin show…what this has done is divide the participants in to three camps, pro and con Palin, and all things political.
What a couple of dopes for ever cooking this up, can you spell damagoguery?

    • Texas Vet  May 29, 2011 at 12:16 am

As one senior editor has said, stewart, “Rolling thunder has way too many Nam veteran wannabes in their group.”

To quote him exactly: “as for rolling thunder you can find more real vietnam vets on the moon than on rolling thunder”.

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 1:36 am

      Texas Vet:

I wonder how many of Palin’s supporters that claim they are Military are really high school dropouts?

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 1:22 am

Palin and her crew tried to insult and present their version of the truth about Ted Shpak. A man who has devoted his life to his follow Vietnam Veterans.

  21. Cathy  May 28, 2011 at 7:56 am

As the widow of a Vietnam Veteran ,who has been active in Veteran’s Outreach for more than 25 years I ask you this.If Sarah Palin just wants to be there to just show her support for Veterans why did a huge announcement by her “People” have to be made several days before the event? Why does her Big Campaign Bus need to be parked in plain sight? Why not just show up and be there for the Vets without the big hoopla.of” Look at me” !! She’s as phony as you get !

    • Texas Vet  May 29, 2011 at 12:10 am

We thank your husband for his service. And for you doing the best you can to support his memories. But let me ask you (and just as importantly, any Vets posting) a question, Cathy. If you were trapped on a muggy hot jungle hillside in Nam who would you want covering your six? Obama? H. Clinton? S.Palin?

Let me ask you another way. If you managed to make it home on a stretcher, damaged for life, who would you want to be looking out for your future years of recovery?

I’d go for Palin. The others are narcissists supreme. They’d run for cover. Palin will and does cover the Veterans’ sixes. Enough said.

      Cheers and thanks,

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 1:12 am

Respect the wishes of the Rolling Thunders.

They do not want it to be political.

Palin isn’t fooling anyone. She wants to out-stage President Obama when his in Joplin, Missouri for the Prayer Vigil for the victims of the disaster.

      She has no shame.

    • The Die Hard  May 29, 2011 at 5:48 am

I’d want President Obama’s youngest daughter on my six before I’d trust that triple-chinned wh0re with a water pistol. I’d prefer my 18-year-old cat looking after my medical care before I’d let that scuzzsl^t, who blew a quarter of a million dollars on K-Mart blue-light special clothes, so much as put ben-gay on a sprained wrist.

And no, you have never been in the military, so quit bothering to try to sound “tough guy” by cut-and-pasting from bad novels. You’re a little weenie who wants to have unclothed relations with someone other than a cardboard cutout, and never will.

The mentally-dysfunctional rear-end-wiggler, whose children obviously all inherited her disabilities, could not possibly care less about soldiers. Anyone who believes otherwise is a member of that group that Ronnie threw out of insane asylums.

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 9:36 am

The die hard: Thank you for a good laugh.

The quitter showed up at the Rolling Thunders Event with her own camera crew. Fox is interviewing all pro-palin supporters at the event.

Palin is sucking up all the media coverage.

Please folks remember their are people suffering. President Obama will be at a Prayer Vigil today in Joplin, Missouri.

Palin will success in upstaging the President and the victims. The Mean Girl Revenge.

The Disaster Victims will need biapartisan support to rebuild.

    • Kenai_Gal  May 29, 2011 at 9:45 am

I am Alaskan Vietnam veteran, Sarah Palin is a liar and a grifter. She will do nothing but cause a distraction. I would definitely rather have President Obama at my back. We have all seen what Sarah Palin did in Alaska, when things get tough she walks away. Definitely not someone you want covering your back.

    • usmcviet  May 29, 2011 at 10:06 am

      Texas Vet,
I know you have made quite a bit of sense in the majority of remarks I have seen you post. But you are
dead wrong on Palin. She is a publicity hound, a kook, a dumb dimwit. Did you know she is actually a true
“blond” ? (Sorry for all you truly liberal blonds..I just couldn’t resist 🙂 !) And now, living in Arizona, I have to
worry about her possibly running for John Kyl’s seat in the US Senate (another blow-heart !), or possibly
Govenor of this state. As much as I dislike Brewer, Plain would be even more of a disaster. Shit,
she couldn’t even handle a full term in Alaska ! Semper Fi to ALL vets on this Memorial Day.

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 10:40 am

usmcviet: Best to you. Palin quit Alaska and their work year is minimal. She quit because she had already signed a contract for paid speaking engagements. Fox lets her sit on their pot and turn our political election method into a joke. It’s wrong to have her as their paid commentator and at the same times she collecting money for her PAC.

She would actually have to work and answer question if she was a Senator or Representative and both elected positions would be a step down for her giant ego. Remember the disaster victims. They are suffering and will need bipartisan support and our help.

God Bless our Troops and their families. Daily they make the greatest sacrifice for us for little pay and lousy conditions.

p.s. I’m sure glad she picked the desert and not an oceanview.

  22. cory  May 28, 2011 at 7:53 am

According to columnist Ed Morrisey of, his investigation found that, contrary to the report given by NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Lauren Stephenson, Sarah Palin WAS actually invited to “Rolling Thunder” by a retired board member named Michael DiPaolo (link below):

  25. Texas Vet  May 27, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Why would Shpak complain if Palin brings more positive attention to the “Rolling Thunders” general Veterans mission? Sounds to me like he should be cheering the free PR, not whining. ESPECIALLY if she makes it into or next door to the Oval Office. It is possible you know. And we often rejected and forgotten VETs need all the political help we can get to repay us for what we earned with our hearts and souls..

    🙂 T.V. First Cav Vet

    • stewart  May 28, 2011 at 8:16 am

the event needs no PR friend, and the political help is not what this event was ever supposed to have been about to begin with, its about the POW-MIA issue and not the Palin show.

    • Daniel Glines  May 28, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Because her personality is that of a narcissis and she must always be the center of attention.

    • Chris  May 29, 2011 at 1:04 am

Texas Vet: Do you know anything about Ted Shpak? Why don’t you go read the article about his background. Google Ted Shpak Pentagram, there is an excellent article about how he has devoted his life to obtaining benefits for his fellow Vietnam Vets.

After reading about Ted Shpak’s accomplishments if your resume is thicker in support of our Veterens then put in your 2 cents. But, I doubt that you can match his decades of hard work. So why don’t you just make a nice donation to Rolling Thunders via paypal and stop your whining.

Texas Vet, shame on you. If you are really a vet. If not consider changing your name to palin kiss axx.

p.s. Since Palin will suck up the media airwaves and overshadow the Prayer Service in Joplin, Missouri why don’t you also make a nice donation to the Red Cross for the disaster victims.

Yes, I have made two donations this week.

    • The Die Hard  May 29, 2011 at 5:30 am
