Racism is Alive and Well

When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s, racism was an accepted way of life. In the north where I grew up, it was not written into the law, but that made little practical difference. I lived in an all white suburb of Detroit and the only black people I saw were the garbage collectors and occasionally a delivery person.
The N word was thrown around loosely and one neighbor even named his black dog, Niggy. Major strides were made in the 60s with the civil rights legislation and when I went off to an integrated college, I found that my suspicions were correct that we had more in common than we had differences. Slowly things changed; more blacks were on TV and the job situation improved.
The economy was doing well and all people had the chance to get decent jobs. The military promoted equality, though the high command remained mostly white. The USSR was our common enemy and this was more important than individual differences.
By the turn of the 21st. century, it appeared that true equality, while not yet a reality, was at least, within sight. Of course, not everyone was onboard with this. There were still some hate groups, both white and black, but most people realized how stupid racial hatred is. Many blacks were now part of the middle class or higher. The new divide seemed to be more along economic lines rather than racial with poor blacks and ‘white trash” being the scorned.
When Kanye West made his famous remark following Katrina that President Bush did not care about black people, it would have probably have been more accurate if he had said that President Bush did not care about poor people, regardless of their color. Of course, in the case of New Orleans, they were mostly poor black people.
By 2008, most Americans were willing to accept Barak Obama as a serious candidate for president and, of course, he won and became president. Many of us patted ourselves on the back for putting qualifications ahead of race and some even went as far as to say that race no longer mattered. If only that were true. Instead of uniting the country, Obama’s presidency seems to have brought out all of the extremist nutjobs who preach hatred. In reality, Barak Obama is as much white as he is black.
His mother was a European American and his father was African, but no one thinks of him as the half white or half black president. Old Jim Crow laws from the south stated that in determining the race of a person, if he/she had one drop of negro blood, he/she was a negro. While this is no longer a legal standard, people still think that way, so Obama is black.
As the first black president, he has been subjected to insults and questions that have never faced a president before.
Even after showing his birth certificate, something no other president has ever had to do, some people still think he was not born in the US. Hawaii has been a state since 1959 and was a US territory before that so there really should have been no question.
His only difference, is his color. Even before his election, some questioned his loyalty to this country and his attendance of a controversial Christian church for 20 years was made a huge campaign issue.
Those same people now say that he is a Muslim. First of all, if he were a Muslim, there would be nothing wrong with that. The constitution states that there shall be no religious standard applied to candidates for office, so whether the candidate is Muslim, Jew, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, or Atheist should not make any difference.
Our government is supposed to be secular and completely removed from any religious influence. This is why our country has lasted as long as it has. Theocracies tend to be short lived. Obama is not a Muslim, of course. Rev. Wright’s church does not teach from the Quran.
It is one thing to criticize a politician’s policies or even his qualifications, but 
questioning his citizenship or loyalty is going too far. G. W. Bush received a lot of criticism during and after his presidency, but I have never heard anyone question his love of country. We just feel that his ideas were wrong.
Obama has been called every name in the book and a few that have not made the book yet. Bill Clinton was hated by the right, but even he did not get this kind of treatment.
I can only conclude that Obama is being singled out due to his race. I have a friend that is politically a right winger, and this is fine as long as he stays with issues and qualifications, but he keeps sending me extremely distasteful raciest cartoons and stories about the President.
One of the milder cartoons featured a photo of an ape family with the President and his family’s faces on the apes. Even his daughters’ faces were used. I have not seen such trash since the 50s, and I thought we were well past those days.
Even the First Lady has not been spared. First Ladies typically have a project or theme for their tenure in the White House. Laura Bush promoted literacy and reading, which is ironic considering who she is married to, but never the less, it was a good issue to promote. Michelle Obama is promoting good nutrition and exercise for our young people. This should not be a contriversial subject, but there are those who view this as government telling them how to raise their children, and if they want to poison them with crap food, it is their right.
The Obama candidacy in 2008 brought out a lot of young, hopeful people that were energized by his message of hope and change. He has accomplished some of his promise, but mostly has been a disappointment to his strongest supporters. He has continued many of the Bush policies that he campaigned against. WHY? This is the question many of us have been asking. People who know him say that he does not like confrontation and is too willing to compromise. This certainly seems to be the case as he often starts a negotiation by offering a compromise.
Perhaps, as the first “black president” he is being overly cautious. When Jackie Robinson was chosen to re-integrate major league baseball, (baseball was integrated in the late 19th century, but became re-segregated around the turn of the 20th century) he was chosen for two primary reasons: First, he was an excellent baseball player and no one could question that fact, but there were many very good ball players in the Negro Leagues. What made Robinson really special was his personality.
He knew he was going to be ridiculed, insulted, spat upon and he could take it and turn the other cheek. This is a rare talent. When a spectator spit on him, he had to resist the temptation to go into the stands and beat the living hell out of him. To do so would have set back the re-integration of the major leagues and he could see this.
Obama may be in a similar position. If he gets angry and calls out his opponents, some people will say, “Well, it was only a matter of time before the [fill in the racial slur of your choice here] came out.” He has to be that much better to be considered equal. Recent information received by VT staff indicates that the lives of the president’s family have been threatened if he does not toe the line. This might explain a lot. He may well feel that no one has his back and his only option is to cooperate. This could explain why his policies are often so different from his promises.
When the early campaigning in 2007 and the primaries of 2008 made it clear that the Democratic candidate would be either a black man or a white woman, and the Democratic candidate would most likely win the general election, the decision was made to crash the economy and time it to occur shortly after the election. Their ideal scenario would be for the economy to crash within a week after the election so the woman or black man could be blamed for it all. See what happens when you elect one of them.Unfortunately for the right wingers, the crash occurred before the election, during the Bush administration. The new president was left in a deep hole that he still has not been able to climb out of.
PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL???
His lack of experience at the national level and his desire to be all inclusive played right into the hands of the right wingers. They have fought every attempt to restore the country apparently believing that it is more important to damage the black president than to help the country.
This would greatly reduce the chance of seeing another one for quite a while. Had Hilary Clinton been elected instead, the plan was the same except it would have been designed to block future women.
Apparently the decision has been made that the country will stay in this hole for another 4 years and so the current plan is for Obama to be allowed to retain the office for another 4 rough years.
Why else would the GOP be fielding their current field of mental midgets? It appears that they actually want to lose so Obama will continue to be blamed for all that is wrong in the world.

I was sent to a precinct where a man, 6 foot three with Elvis Chops, dressed in a red white and blue leather outfit, caucasian,Square dancer-yes later he gave me his card. I was tasked with checking this precints open voting record of the day(that they failed to provide for a long time). We had a conflict, he tried to get me thrown out of the precinct. I told him I was staying til eight o clock and was going no where. -That I had my legal rights to be there. At first I was sitting at the table with them, then the Obama people told me I could only check the votes outside, which is where I moved. Later the man apologized to me and offered to buy me Pizza. I thanked him, but declined. Obama became president . The rest is History. Wolf you are still a moron!

Vote for someone who supports the constitution and does not perpetuate the so called ‘war on terror’. Who will support a ‘citizens grand jury’ to investigate 911 and of course end the private federal reserve that has pushed this country into bankruptcy. 1913 was the final coup by the International Banking Elite’. As we know, Kennedy was intent on ending the control of our money by private international banks and stood against this tyranny. It cost him his life, yet, without this kind of leadership, there will be no chance of bringing this country and the world back from the abyss of chaos and war. We need to elect someone who is not afraid to confront these issues and only one candidate has stated his determination to: 1. end imperial conquests 2.
dismantle the private federal reserve 3. Has stated he would support a new investigation into 911 as the commission was a failure, and this man is Ron Paul. I do not agree with his position on many issues, however,

Now, why is it that black people aren’t allowed to fail like everyone else? How about just admitting that this guy is not up to the job, black, white, green or purple. He has made terrible policy decisions that have worsened any situation he might have ‘inherited’ and has done nothing to bring about any improvements. Moreover, he has failed his own base by not living up to any of his promises to them in any meaningful way, with a couple of exceptions, and they are abandoning him in droves…not because he’s black but because he’s a failure at his job.
I would also ask why the author insists on making this a racial issue? I would suspect he’s the racist since those are the goggles he seems to wear. One needs to be able to assess the situation without resorting to the race card, which by the way, is overplayed and no longer effective.
As for the real racists, monkey pics, etc, I would say two things: 1) there were plenty of monkey pics of George Bush, if I remember correctly and 2) there truly are some ignorant people among us who, like the author, are unable to get past the race issue and evaluate people not based upon the color of their skin but on their job performance. Obama presided over a failed administration. And no attempt to make it a racial issue can make that go away.

Color and Gender seems to be of great consequence in this 2008 US election debate, but substance: who stands for what, and who has the legacy to back such stances, neither is promising, I am afraid. Black, white, a woman, a man, shouldn’t really matter. Shouldn’t it be about substance? Collin Powell the man was black, and Rice the woman is? They have committed or contributed to genocide, haven’t they? Does it make a difference for a Palestinian, Iraqi or Afghani child to be killed by a bullet fired from a black, a white or even an Arab as long as he will die or suffer his entire life as a result of the decisions these people make?
We all, particularly in the Western world and those places influenced by the west, have been conditioned for too long that any racial bias, or implication of bias, is the most despicably grievous failure of humanity, and yet, it seems that to accomplish our goals, that might be necessary as the only, recourse.
What do we do? Embark on a program of genocide? I don’t think that is an acceptable solution.
We must find a more humane way.
Colin Powell’s “successes” and career achievements in the military were based on his tokenhood as a young black in the right place at the correct time. After graduating from City College in June 1958, he was granted a commission as an Army Second Lieutenant. Powell was a professional soldier for 35 years, during which time he held a variety of command and staff positions and rose to the rank of General. His advancement into the higher ranks began with his compliant cooperation with the My Lai cover-up. He has been a tame, compliant and convenient military lapdog. Since then, he went on to serve a White House fellowship under President Richard Nixon.
I believe, he may have originally had the character and the strength of conviction to have made it on his own, had he been given the chance and had he been white but, unfortunately he was not and he never had a chance to shed his skin and be himself. Too bad for him and his country. Once you have signed the Faustian contract, there is no redemption.
I suspect that Condi Rice has suffered something similar. A brilliant woman, who is also black, struggles against two of the major cultural barriers between her and success in America and, armed and capable of making it on her own merits, she is still classified as a black and a female and given a token ride on the bus whether she liked it, desired it, or not. She too, never had much of a chance to become Condoleeza Rice. More than perhaps Powell did, but still wearing the same chains.
The fact that she is member in good standing of the Stanford community says all that one can say about her political bias and basis. Stanford is the home of the well-dressed, immaculately manicured and coiffed American Republican party, otherwise known as the Grand Old Party, the GOP. Stanford hosts the Hoover Institute, which is about as right as right can get. (“right” meaning the opposite of “left” not the opposite of “wrong”). They are not as open, rude and crude as the competing newcomers of the Johnny-come-lately Fascist Neocon group from Chicago and big-business, and they carry their weapons concealed under a veneer of academic charm, dignity and pragmatism, but they are as autocratic, slick and vicious as are the later day Neocons from the South End of Chicago in blue suits.
And then, there are the other competing pretenders to civility and culture, the Skull and Bonezers from Yale. They usually live and travel well on great amounts of old, moldy and heavily tainted money, but they come with the same basic political philosophy and are headed toward the same place as the Stanfords and the Chicago mob. They consider themselves superior to both because they have been around a bit longer, but that is about the sole distinction.
It would appear that Obama is the forerunner of a similar group operating out of Harvard Yard, another hotbed of the same wannabe leaders of the world. They too have been around for a long time, as long if not even longer than the Skull and Bonezer bozos. They travel under the banner of the Democrat (Democrat, a nominal term, definitely not adjectival as in “democratic”) Party, solely because of the proximity of Harvard Yard to Boston Commons and Scollay Square, the joint home, along with the cotton, corn and goober fields of the Southern States, and the factories of America of the Democrat Party.
Most Democrats, except for the elitist leaders who purport to “represent” them but whom they actually depend upon to further and support their own personal agenda, not that much different from the Stanforders, Yalies, Neocons, and South Chicago mobsters, have the soil of the earth or the grime of America’s Industries under their fingernails… unbecoming dirt never associated with any of the more socially acceptable and recognized hard-core Rightists mentioned above.
The distinctions are fine, but it is these fine distinctions which, in the end, make all the difference.
Many men like Faust have played the game with the Devil. Many have sought to renege on the deal. Many have believed that they can, only lease their soul for a few hours, for a “short-timer,” and walk away free after the messy work is done but… the Devil has learned from the mob… and once you take his first cent, you are his, for the deal is sealed, based not on how much you negotiated for, but the fact that you made the pact.
It is not a question of whether Obama has sold soul. He too did not get to where he is without making the Pac. Whether he can break the deal, or whether he will even try, is another question which has yet to be seen. No one has succeeded so far. My gut feeling, he will at least try, the alternative is scary. I don’t mean just from a Middle East Policy standpoint, but even for his country.
Well, even Fox News Commentator Bill O’Reilly, a smart product of, the institutions that breed smart agents, says a lot of nice things about Obama the sincere man he recently met for a Chat. Obama the President? We’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we? Well, could be that Bill O’Reilly is just trying to put the peanut butter on both sides of his toast. It could also be that he is an honest man, and there are just certain things which he cannot, or will not, do! Perhaps he is no longer the believer he once was. Some men change.
I, a knee-jerk idealistic romantic who still believes in the fundamental goodness of man (against all available evidence) tend to go with the “honest man” option.
It is all conjecture.Of course brilliance in one thing is no indicator of one’s ability in other endeavors. History is all we have to go by.

The problem is that people of principal are forced to either hide their principals or forced to conform. If you hide your principals your talent can never be unleashed, if you conform then your principals are not a guiding factor in your life. At the end of duty, when you stand before whatever made this universe, I believe all we will have is our principals and in some cases that’s very scant covering.

Are you insane? This author isn’t making it a racial issue. It is a racial issue. Things have been said and portrayed about Obama since he began running for president. Everything in his article is the exact way America deals with race. The cartoons, snide remarks are an American hallmark. Even people in other countries know that there’s a distinct color line in the US. This man isn’t a racist. He’s seeing exactly what America is under that PC demeanor.

If affirmative action did not exist and Negros had to be measured by merit and ability, instead of being advanced because of their race to rectify the perception of past racial discrimination, then people would trust them to be competent.
