My Thanksgiving With the French Resistance

A Twelve Year Old Being hunted by the Gestapo – Others Standing Against a Wall Waiting to be Shot for 12 Hours – A Peek Behind a WWII Curtain

…by  Jim W. Dean, VT Editor

Jean-Jacques Auduc

I was honored to have Thanksgiving dinner in Atlanta yesterday with a group from the Franco American Veterans Association. The food was wonderful, and the company delightful, a day I will never forget.

I have no video footage of WWII resistance fighters in my archives. Those who joined as children at the time have stories that even a Hollywood screenwriter could not have come up with. The old adage of ‘truth is stranger than fiction is the picture frame for their exploits.

As often happens I learned about their coming here via an email. This one came from the French Consulate where I had attended a once in a liftime ceremony in September.

A dozen American WWII veterans were given France’s highest decoration, the Legion of Honor, dating back to the Napoleonic Wars.  Working as a Veterans Today editor sometimes gets the red carpet rolled out, always a treat for any of our volunteer writing and editing staff.

This story just got bigger and bigger by the hour while researching. I had never heard of the Association Anciens Combattants Franco Americains before.  They are the folks who run all of the ‘thank you America’ WWII memorial services all across France every year, and they turned out to be a colorful and very interesting bunch.

Another wonderful twist was learning that it was all started in 1995 by the American Major John Rodgers, who landed on Utah Beach with Patton’s Army, and ended up his military career in Vietnam.

Having married a French girl he found himself back in France for retirement and wanted to preserve the heroic memories of the French resistance who had helped so many American airmen and later soldiers, after D-Day.

Some of their early work involved placing monuments at bomber crash sites where the survivors were saved from capture and smuggled out to Spain  or England via the resistance networks. This was not done without costs as they were penetrated and broken up from time to time with the resulting harsh treatment of the Gestapo. This is one of those stories.

Few know their names, what they did or how they died. The Association works to keep their memory alive.

Jean-Jacques Auduc – France’s youngest Resistance member – He started out carrying messages in his handle bars – then moved on to spying and sabotage when he was 12

Jean-Jacques Auduc was 11 years old when his father told him he would be working for the resistance. The whole family was involved, even Grandma who hosted the traveling radio operator.

When I asked him about the danger of the whole family being caught when one was picked up he told me that risk had to be balanced against the safety of knowing your family would not turn you in for the Gestapo reward.

Emile Klein’s network was busted up this way. The network leader ran the local garage and took on a Parisian refugee who wanted to get away from the Allied bombing by working in the suburbs.

After he learned that the boss and his assistant were in the resistance he betrayed them for the 50,000 franc reward.

The garage owner and assistant were captured, tortured, given the full treatment, fingernails pulled out, burned, and other unpleasantries, but revealed no information which gave up the netword members. Mind you, these were people who had not been trained in dealing with torture like is done now.

Emile also started out as a messenger, but found himself awaiting execution with his village hostage group after the resistance had killed two German soldiers nearby.

He described to me how the SS had told them that if they even saw anyone looking out a window of the schools they were moved to they would throw grenades inside. This was after they had spent from 11am to 11pm the day before lined up at the execution wall.

As fortunately happens sometimes, the advancing Americans columns forced the Germans to pull back and saved the village hostages from a sadder fate. Emil described grown men crying, not due to the no food or water for two days, but the intense fear over what could happen to their families.

One village had already been burned in their church in retribution for the resistance killing of Germans during the retreat.

I don’t mind adding my opinion here that killing a few German soldiers during their retreat had no effect whatsoever on the outcome of any battle, and unnecessarily put large numbers of civilians at risk.

Renee Auduc, Jean-Jacques’ mother, never recovered from her Ravensbruck years… dying at age 42 in 1949.

Widely unknown even today is that executing hostages for partisan killings was legal under international law at the time, a little item that slips through the history cracks, also for partisan reasons.

The American Civil War saw the Yankee forces do this on occasion. You won’t find this in any school books, but in the official archives.

Jean-Jacques parents got caught and ended up in Ravensbrook concentration camp.  They did survive the war, but his mother died in 1949.

When discussing with him the old problem of WWII vets never wanting to discuss the war, he told me that this was the same among many of the French vets and resistance fighters, also.

His parents never talked about Ravensbruck, explaining once to Jean-Jacques that if they did no one would ever believe it.

His father lost two brothers killed in the network, and as the years went by their two widows were always at family reunions as bitter reminders. And yes, the widows did blame Jean-Jacques’ father for the deaths of their husbands. Hence, discussing the war days was never a popular subject for many years.

Jean-Jacques had already been decorated by the time he was twelve for running spying and sabotage operations. They taught him to arm a magnetic mine and how to spill his marble bag under a German truck so he could get under it to collect them up and place the mine.

The German soldiers even helped him collect his marbles. An hour later the truck blew up but no one ever tied the two events together.

Wooden bombs were used to send a message that the decoys did not work

Another time London wanted visual information on a Luftwaffe base that had three squadrons of planes instead of the usual only one.

Adults were not allowed to get within eyesight of any of these air bases, but Jean-Jacques did, flying his kite just on the other side of the perimeter fence. He was able to spot that the underside of the planes were wooden, and unpainted…decoys…and reported that back.

The British responded by bombing the base with wooden bombs just to let the Germans know that they knew.

Eventually the war ended and the politicians began their traditional form of warfare. De Gaul had always had his problems with the British. Jean-Jacques paid for this. Because he had been in a British network, France compensated him for this war time loses with a big Zero…no pension, no medical care, nothing.

After the war Jean-Jacques became a forester for 40 years ‘so I did not have to be around people’. In his retirement he has come out of the closet, or the forest I should say.

Clarie and Ken Kirk, author of… Messages in Handlebars

People are his life now, and he is sharing his story more widely now due to Atlanta author Ken Kirk’s 2011 book called Messages in Handlebars, on Jean-Jacqes’ story and some of the other resistance fighters. Ken’s wife Claire is fluent in French and was a great interpreter.

Sharing Thanksgiving Day with these people was like being in a dream, but it was real. We will try to make it more real for others by getting more coverage of their work.  I could find no YouTube video of them so we will try to fix that, and of course cover them as needed in VT.

The 70th anniversary of the liberation is coming up, and probably the last one where participants will be attending. I dearly hope to somehow be able to do over.

I will never forget what my dear friend and mentor Jeff Davis (yes, a descendent of CSA President Jefferson Davis) shared with me during the last interview I shot of him before he died. When he joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans General John B. Gordon camp in the early 1950′s here in Atlanta, where I am also a member…that on Confederate Memorial Day there were STILL  living Confederate Veterans attending.  It just blew my mind.

We all need to see to it that our young people have some similar stories to tell their grandchildren many years from now. We here at Veterans Today will do our part as best we can. And we hope maybe, someday, someone will be telling our stories.

A delightful and inspiring WWII book

During World War II, the French Resistance played a vital role in the Allied victory. Supported by Brittain’s Special Operations Executive in London, Resistance networks were formed, led and equipped by SOE agents.

The Auduc family provided essential support to the network formed around Le Mans, France, by an American OSS agent and a French SOE agent. The Auduc’s oldest son, Jean-Jacques, became the youngest Resistance fighter to be awarded the Croix de Guerre.

He was also awarded the U. S. Medal of Freedom and the French Legion of Honor for heroism as a 12 year old. Other members of this heroic family were similarly distinguished.

The downing of two B-17′s on July 4, 1943, brought the Auduc’s face to face with the five surviving U. S. airmen and changed each other’s lives forever as the airmen were first sheltered and then repatriated to England. The graves of those airmen who perished were resolutely guarded by French citizens.

The Legion of Honor

The Auduc family and their fellow resistants teach us how much people will sacrifice to gain freedom from an oppressor. American, British, Canadian and French worked in cloaked secrecy and harmony to rid the world of the greatest evil in recorded history.

U. S. airman Sgt. David Butcher stayed with the Resistance for eight months, training its members in the use of the weapons parachuted to them. Other downed airmen were assisted by underground networks to escape to Spain and eventual repatriation to England.

American Army Captain and OSS member Fred Floege twice parachuted into France on missions for the SOE. During his second mission, he organized and led a large group of resistants in the east of France who stymied German movements before and during the D-Day landings.

This is a true, previously untold story of undaunted resistance to the Nazis. Alfred Auduc awes with his reckless determination to thwart the Nazis even while imprisoned in concentration camps along with his brother and other resistants from his region. His mother at age 66 harbors a radio transmitter and its operator while receiving munitions drops on her farm.

The end of the War is not the end of the Auduc’s story. Through them we learn how the Marshall plan helped to restart European’s lives. But we also learn how the deep scars of their incarceration pain them throughout their lives.

For many years, Jean-Jacques Auduc has belonged to a French association whose mission is to remember Allied sacrifices to liberate their country. Jean-Jacques relates his story to French school children; he proudly carries the American flag at commemorative events; and, he restores and maintains Allied monuments.

Jean-Jacques chooses to use his meager funds in this way rather than on a TV set or a computer or the internet or other comforts. Perhaps the proceeds from this book may allow him some comforts in his eighties.

My wife, Claire, who translated the several bios which are included in this book, Jean-Jacques, who so much wished to have his family’s and friends’ stories preserved, and I thank you for your interest.  Kendrick Kirk

Messages in Handlerbars is available on Amazon.

I had the honor to see these Legions of Honor presented to twelve WWII American veterans in Atlanta in September, France’s highest decoration.

  1. “American, British, Canadian and French worked in cloaked secrecy and harmony to rid the world of the greatest evil in recorded history.”

So they were fighting the Stalin/Beria/Kaganovich Soviet Union?

    • They do present a comic book wrap on the event, and even the vets engage in this. The worst example was WWI with the Brits. It was the last time when all the diplomatic correspondence leading up to the start of a war was released soon after. It was an open admission of the huge subterfuge the Brit elites used, not only lying to the public, but the Parliament and most of the upper leadership. Francis Neilso wrote who the cable reports were ripped into confetti and the MPs went on strike for a day leaving the floors littered.

And despite all of the public revelations, there was not a whimper out of the vets, despite their being on the bread lines and unemployed for years as the eliminating Germany as a trading partner threw huge numbers of British and French vet into poverty.

Neilson poses that they just could not bear to think that all of the deaths and sacrifices had just been a criminal act, and to a great deal by their own elite. But never again would material be released like this. We still have a good bit of WWII stuff classifed, and it is of course all the major lies and deceptions used on the people. Those coming afterward cover the behinds of the others as they also want to be able to do this to the public when it suits them, and have those following them cover their behinds.

It’s something that the public should really put their feet in the fire on, as it really has nothing to do with national security but quite the reverse.

  2. Both wars were in fact planned hoaxes to consolidate control of the world’s human and natural resources, and money supply. This depraved plan has been in effect for a long time. Monarchs were vilified and executed first, well into the 20th century, and the parasites have been wildly successful in replacing them with the illusion of democracy which is in fact controlled by the same psychopaths. Former subjects became citizens and were taught that they could control their own destinies. Hahahahaha.

Then came the assault on culture, also denigrated as old hat by the degenerate NWO mandarins and their media and university toadies, and replaced with vulgar NWO culture, or rather dysculture. We don’t know who we are anymore, and as such we are primed for new identities. We even have a new vocabulary to attack one another as not sufficiently multiculti. The wars furthered the destruction of growing national cultures everywhere. They were never really a threat to anyone but the NWO, and so authentic and beautiful culture had to go.

Worst of all was and continues to be the human cost. As brave as the young Maquis messengers were, it never had to come to that. As fearsome as the Germans were in occupied nations, that never really had to come to that either. They were no where near as bad as our own traitor FDR whipping the whole country into a frenzy of war. None of his parasitic family paid the ultimate price. It was all the Jean-Jacques, Antoines, Erwins, Johanns, Mikes, and Tommys of the world who were used for their unnatural plans. And don’t think for a minute they’re done. They’re just getting warmed up. They have all kinds of fancy toys that can take out anyplace they want. Both world war hoaxes were artifice conjured up in swanky boardrooms years earlier, with lost lives factored like empty numbers on a financial ledger. Nothing has changed, our slave masters have only gotten worse.

      • Follow the money – The Greenback Pound

In Chapter 6, entitled ‘Usury on the Great War’, I’ve selected the following paragraphs which I believe are both shocking and self-explanatory:

WHEN the whistle blew for the start of the Great War in August 1914 the Bank of England possessed only nine millions sterling of a gold reserve, and, as the Bank of England was the Bankers’ Bank, this sum constituted the effective reserve of all the other Banking Institutions in Great Britain.

The bank managers at the outbreak of War were seriously afraid that the depositing public, in a panic, would demand the return of their money. And, inasmuch as thedeposits and savings left in the hands of the bankers by the depositing public had very largely been sunk by the bankers in enterprises which, at the best, could not repay the borrowed capital quickly, and which in several and large-scale instances were likely to be submerged altogether in the stress of war and in the collapse of great areas of international trade, it followed that if there were a widespread panicky run upon the banks, the banks would be unable to pay and the whole credit system would collapse, to the ruin of millions of people.

Private enterprise banking thus being on the verge of collapse, the Government (Mr. Lloyd George at the time was Chancellor of the Exchequer) hurriedly declared a moratorium, i.e. it authorized the banks not to pay out (which in any event the banks could not do), and it extended the August Bank Holiday for another three days. During these three or four days when the banks and stock exchanges were closed, the bankers held anxious negotiation with the Chancellor of the Exchequer. And one of them has placed upon record the fact that ‘he (Mr. George) did everything that we asked him to do.’ When the banks reopened, the public discovered that, instead of getting their money back in gold, they were paid in a new legal tender of Treasury notes (the £1 notes in black and the 10s. notes in red colours). This new currency had been issued by the State, was backed by the credit of the State, and was issued to the banks to prevent the banks from utter collapse. The public cheerfully accepted the new notes; and nobody talked about inflation.

        • It’s even worse than that. The traitor “Sir” William Wiseman headed up British Intel, reported to Rothschild, and willfully had the best of Britain put to death so as to break up the four main Continental Empires. He worked with his counterpart Max Warburg who headed up German Intel, also reporting to Rothschild.

Economic collapse and population control was in fact a well thought out plan. While all the target populations were staggering around in a daze at war’s/hoax’s end, and with the pesky Monarchs dead and out of the way, the parasites consolidated money and control. With so many men dead, missing, or wounded, that left their their women and children at the mercy of the parasites who set about changing the culture to one of state dependency and vulgarity, which has only grown worse with time.

The bankers who were not in on the hoax instinctively sensed something was amiss but could not place it and how could they? How could they imagine that the rot went right to the top? How could they imagine that their own army was being put to death by British Intel? Who would believe them even if they sounded the alarm? And how long would they have lived if they did?

Truth has been held hostage for too long but now has her opportunity. She is unleashing the lies more quickly by the day and they will only get more depraved with time.

          • I don’t know why, but I admire women that scare the bejeezus out of me. Good on you, Ann. You are always a pleasure to read.
            Same goes for lola.

    • Hoax is an inappropriate term here. While the causes of the wars were not what the public was told, the fighting and destruction were very real.

A real hoax was the Gulf of Tonkin “incident”, where the alleged attacks on US Navy ships never happened.

  3. WW II was simply the continuation of WW I. Germany especially hardest hit as they were erroneously blamed for starting WW I, made to pay massive monetary damages by the zionist controlled armistice. The zionists wanted more than anything to destroy Germany and its people.

It is my belief that Churchill declared war on Germany not because of its invasion of Poland , which it had every right to do, but for the nationalizing of its banks and monetary system, which of course the jues did not like, especially the Rothschilds, who controlled the Bank of England and thus the British government. Germany had to be punished…a second time.

As for Germany invading France, for which Hitler felt was to avenge a humiliation done against the German people, may or may not be right depending on which side of the world you stand, that is if we are to believe the stated motives. I suspect historians such as David Irving may know the actual reason for this.
America does owe a debt of gratitude to those who fought in the resistance. Not just in France, but in Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Denmark and many other countries.

Today those who resist American or zionist ie: israhelli domination are called terrorists but do those whom we call terrorists, drop bombs from B-52s or Hell Fire missiles from drones piloted by zit faced 19 year olds ten thousand miles away, who thinks it’s all just another computer game?

Just who are the true freedom fighters of today and who are the aggressors and oppressors? We only need to look within our own border at a government, out of control of the people, but controlled by the banksters, Military Industrial Complex, oil and coal and of course by zionists, which has become not unlike that of Stalin’s regime. After all, the communist regime in Russia was installed by these same zionist jues.

Take a good close look at those within the White House,(filled with jues) Congress, the SCOTUS, the DHS and elsewhere and you will find theses same zionist jues have infiltrated our government and turned it against us.
The zionist jue is the world’s worst enemy bar none. Worse than NAZI Germany ever was as they have completely conquered America and now have full control of its government, something Germany could never have accomplished. They have turned America into a de Facto police state in order to protect their jewish banking fraud and the corporations which have grown up around it.

The zionist jue will gut America and allow it to dry up and blow away.

  4. duay khwaam nap theuu

Inspiring and informative stories, Jim. Thank you for writing them up and sharing them.

Here are some WWII words from another Frenchman, who later went missing as pilot on a reconnaissance mission in July 1944, at the age of 44.

American friends, I would like to fully do you justice… It is not for material gain that American mothers accepted to let their sons go. It is not for material gain those boys accepted to put their lives on the line.. The fifty thousand men in my convoy went to war to save not the American citizen, but man himself, human dignity, human freedom, human greatness. How can I forget the great cause for which the American people joined the fight ?

My faith in you was confirmed in Tunis, where I was among you in July 1943, taking part in missions in a Lightning [F-5 reconnaissance aircraft based on the P-38]. One night, a twenty-year old American pilot invited my friends and me to dinner. He was troubled by a moral problem that seemed to him very serious. But he was shy and found it difficult to share his secret dilemma with us. In the end, he explained, blushing:

“This morning I took part in my twenty fifth war mission. I battled with several Messerschmidtt 109. I’ll do the same tomorrow, and I may be shot down. You, you know why you are fighting: you need to save your country. But I have nothing to do with your European problems. Our own interests lie in the Pacific. So, if I accept the risk to be buried here, it is, in my mind, to give you back your country. Every man has the right to live free in his country. And I support every man. But after my fellow Americans and I have helped you free your home, will you help us in the Pacific ?”

We could have kissed this young friend! At this time of danger, he needed to hear all of us confirm his faith in the solidarity of all men.

You see, American friends… your young men were dying in a war which, for the first time in history, was, in spite of all its horrors, and albeit dimly felt, an experience of love.

    Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
