Gassing Up the KIA
By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor
Photos by Gordon and Carol Duff
With a minimum of commentary, we take the short run from Germany’s Mosel Valley, through Calais and into Scotland.
Please excuse the lack of bathroom stops but I am saving the KIA’s brakes for the Zombie Apocalypse.
Walking above town into the vineyards…
And on toward Piesport and Neumagen…
and…

That’s some drive, Gordon. Bit to the northeast of Dufftown on the coast, there’s also Macduff, which I’ve always found more scenic. They make the last big wooden fishing boats in the UK there. “Local Hero” was filmed just to the east in Pennan. In the town across the river from Macduff (Banff) there’s also a Duff House. I know there’s a Macduff in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”, which was little more than English propaganda, but I don’t think I’ve ever comes across anyone with that surname yet. They maybe shortened it at sometime. Donald without the Mac is a common surname in the area.
Just to the south of Macduff, and east of Dufftown, is Clan Gordon territory. On the east coast of Gordon, Donald Trump is building a big golf course and hotel. He says he’s only here because of his Scottish ancestry. Being Scottish can be a curse at times.
The last pic is of Castle Stalker. Remember the end of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, where John Cleese taunts them with a wicked French accent before the mass charge? That’s the place. It is rumoured that the “Holy Grail” was taken to Scotland by Templar Knights that fled France. And it is said they took the field at Bannockburn for The Bruce almost exactly 700 years ago. When Robert became King, the Catholic Church excommunicated the whole of Scotland for his murder of his main rival in a church years earlier, so they may have been safe here. Now I don’t know the reasons behind the Scottish ties to Masonry, I don’t think I’ve ever met one of them either, but maybe it’s in there somewhere.
If you’re looking for the best scenery Scotland has to offer in one place though, you really can’t beat the Isle of Skye. And you can drive there too these days. But mind the midgies and ticks don’t get you! Though for a city, Edinburgh is awesomely striking.
A beautiful set of pics & thank you again, Mr Duff, for sharing… The Isles & Lochs have fascinating history & unexpected discoveries • Holyrood, Sruighlea.
HI GORDON, IF YOU HAVE TIME COME DOWN TO DEVON!
Welcome to Britain, where you are widely read and admired. I work in both the USA and the UK, and despite the bad news over the past 12 years I am still optimistic about both countries, especially the USA, which I think will ride out the present turmoil and get back to the Constitution.
My Grandfather lived near Edinburgh, at Musselborough, and I still love Scotland, but Devon is warmer, and I am old and cold.
You have a long drive to Speyside, be careful, best Regards, John Kirby
Am in Fairford, a bit north of you, part of the time. I do run down to Devon, Lime Regis, etc, periodically.
Then WEST to watch filming of Doc Martin.
Hi Gordon, If you do decide to go down to Cornwall you will be passing us in South Devon. I live in a thatched house in a hamlet with 9 houses, 5 of them thatched, about 2 miles from the sea, and the local village has 2 pubs..
You are most welcome to stop and stay here. It is like going back 200 years. You can contact me on jkdevon@aol.com,
Best Regards, John Kirby
It’s better on a motorbike, late July through late Sept usually (avoiding August holidays). J’adore Europe.
have a 650 “retro” twin…
Curious Gordon. What KIA do you recommend? The ones they feature in “Nikita?” Also curious, any clue as to something beyond a fictional “Divison?” Especially the one being portrayed in the present season. My guess, is that something like that probably exists. I mean, if we have Nephilim DNA experiments going on in DPNK, then anything is possible, and probable. I’m really addicted to that show. I remember how you also recommend “Burn Notice.” Also one of my favorites.
Germany looks great, pristine. When I visited it reminded me of some parts of N.Pa. and New York State before the In dust real revolution reclaimed the Colonies for the crown.
I wouldn’t mind a few more pics of Caledonia. A different, and more rugged sort of beauty; but breath taking.
I have thousands
Oh…does this mean someone is going to be traveling soon?
