The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism

bully-pulpitThe gap between rich and poor has never been wider . . . legislative stalemate paralyzes the country . . . corporations resist federal regulations . . . spectacular mergers produce giant companies . . . the influence of money in politics deepens . . . bombs explode in crowded streets . . . small wars proliferate far from our shores . . . a dizzying array of inventions speeds the pace of daily life.

These unnervingly familiar headlines serve as the backdrop for Doris Kearns Goodwin’s highly anticipated The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism — a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air.

The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft—a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country’s history.

The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources. The muckrakers are portrayed through the greatest group of journalists ever assembled at one magazine—Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White—teamed under the mercurial genius of publisher S. S. McClure.

Goodwin’s narrative is founded upon a wealth of primary materials. The correspondence of more than four hundred letters between Roosevelt and Taft begins in their early thirties and ends only months before Roosevelt’s death. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers wrote hundreds of letters to one another, kept journals, and wrote their memoirs. The letters of Captain Archie Butt, who served as a personal aide to both Roosevelt and Taft, provide an intimate view of both men.

The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism, like Goodwin’s brilliant chronicles of the Civil War and World War II, exquisitely demonstrates her distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigor with accessibility. It is a major work of history—an examination of leadership in a rare moment of activism and reform that brought the country closer to its founding ideals.

Review
“If you find the grubby spectacle of today’s Washington cause for shame and despair—and really, how could you not?—then I suggest you turn off the TV and board Doris Kearns Goodwin’s latest time machine. … [Goodwin puts] political intrigues and moral dilemmas and daily lives into rich and elegant language. Imagine ‘The West Wing’ scripted by Henry James.”
(Bill Keller, The New York Times Book Review)

“Doris Kearns Goodwin tells this tale with her usual literary skill and deep research. … Goodwin not only sheds light on the birth of the modern political world but chronicles a remarkable friendship between two remarkable men.”
(The Wall Street Journal)

  1. Teddy was a blue blood progressive when placed as NY governor and then VP ticket. The robber barons immediately snuffed McKinley in 1900 and Teddy got reelected in 1904. Teddy stepped aside for Taft in 1908, but by 1912 was seeing the non-progressive view and did support anti-trust and sound currency, which is why the elites tried to snuff teddy, but only wounded him. Woody Wilson won in 1912 with 40% of the vote, delivered the Feral Federal Reserve and Income Tax in 1913. In 1917 Woody delivered the Espionage Act allowing arrest of hundreds of newspaper reporters, editors and owners….monopolizing the printed press. This history covered in the satire “Rice*A*Romney…that MUST have Zombie Treat”.

The elites had previously stolen the four Tesla patents for radio using front man Marconi. Then using front man Edison they created Radio Corporation of America. RCA monopolized the new radio medium. See “I’ll Take Some E Pluribus…but HOLD the Unum”. Both articles at the FSS website along with other science and history Truths. Will review the DKG view on LBJ for accuracy and get back to VT readers, thanks.

“Golden Age of Journalism”..that’s the part that caught my eye….We could use more real journalism…and, then again, it can be found…but what to do with the people who enjoy being lied to fm the neo-con scream machine on the right? I talked on the phone today to an aunt in her 60′s who has Fox “News” totally plugged into her brain….Still uses “Osama Bin Laden” and 9-11 in the same sentence..still doesn’t know that Benghazi was primarily a neo-con take-out of an ambassador who objected to shipping weapons to our terrorist “allies” in Syria..doesn’t appear to know that “Obama-Care” ( subsidizing the purchase of pvt health ins ) was patterned after Romney-Care in Mass..and was pushed by the Heritage Foundation in a policy paper 10 yrs ago!!

  3. Clip from recently aired History Channel series: “America: Fact versus Fiction”

JP Morgan said to Rockefeller & Carnegie: “Gentlemen we have to buy our own president” & so they bought McKinley & got rid of him once he had served their purpose & replaced him with Teddy Rosenwelt (aka: Roosevelt):

US President William McKinley bribed by corporate titans

  4. Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt had been groomed by the powerful NY Jewish political machine to be the Governor of NY and future President of the United States. In 1900, McKinley was forced by Republican partisans of the Jews to appoint “Teddy” Roosevelt as Vice President to get the “Jewish vote.” McKinley’s appointment of Roosevelt soon turned out to be his demise.

McKinley was known as a “hard money” man because he advocated a gold standard and was against “easy money” with no backing — printed by Jewish lenders at interest to the borrower – namely the US government. This was the essence of McKinley’s 1896 & 1900 successful campaign against William Jennings Bryan who advocated for “free and unlimited coinage of silver.”

On September 6, 1901, a 28 year old Polish Jew, Leon Czolgosz, walked into the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY where McKinley was speaking and shot McKinley twice in the abdomen at point blank range. McKinley died a week later and “Teddy” Roosevelt was sworn in as President, much to the delight of the NY Jews.

With McKinley out of the way, the path to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was easily paved through the pawns of Jewish agents of the House of Rothschild. ****http://www.realjewnews.com/?p=169
