Top Heavy Salaries and Dead Weight Administrators

Mark Finchem is running for Congress in Arizona and Chip Tatum is the Director of VATVA.ORG

vavaAs a taxpayer I always want to know where my tax dollars are going and what they are paying for.  Below is a list that was sent to me recently, which helps bring definition to the term “outrageous”.  It is a list of the Phoenix VA Hospital administrators and their salaries.  For clarity, there are no doctors providing patient services in this list; none of these well paid administrators provides care to a Veteran.  If any of these individuals received an efficiency bonus, it should be charged back to them immediately.  If the whole organization has failed, no individual in it should receive a dime in bonus money.

The mess we have is what you get when the government runs top down, central planning, health care.  Getting your head around these numbers is hard enough, but you will see we must transform the government ourselves, it won’t reform itself.  In business we reduce cost by reducing overhead, AKA “management”.

Here is a comparison of Governmental salaries to compare the V.A. Administrators to:

  • Vice President $230,700
  • Senator $174,000
  • Representative $174,000
  • Majority and Minority Leaders $193,400
  • Speaker of the House $223,500
  • Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court $223,500
  • Assoc. Justice, U.S. Supreme Court$213,900

Moving the care delivery to non-VA hospitals and doing away with a separate, tax consumption system that is so poorly run would be a net improvement for the world of care delivery that our Vets have been forced to live within.  If we don’t have the resources to actually provide care for our Vets, how is it we have the resources to pay these salaries and have so many individuals who don’t deliver care on the payroll?

  1. WHEN will the VARO in DesMoines IOWA be INVESTIGATED and held accountable for DEFRAUDING US OF HONEST SERVICES and other CRIMES against US Disabled American veterans ? 4. Thanks Mr. Tatum –

This high-paying criminal theft routine of $$$$ with bogus jobs & titles has been a routine in every establishment especially in counties (like Los Angeles County) & the state of California where many hi-paid individuals are even “ANONYMOUS” on the supposedly public list of public employees roster which they disclose on internet!!!

a few years back some journalist found & discussed on a local radio here that he found dozens of names of county & state employees paid several hundred thousands a year who check into their bogus work just once a week to show up on their registries!!!

So most of the jobs you have listed are probably bogus jobs to begin with. & only created to shave off maximum funds from money centers like Veterans Offices!!!

  5. A wonderful eye opener! Here is another suggestion, if someone can group these into religious/ethnic affiliations you will discover the real truth.

Someone said something about privatization of VA care; which is noble in intent. However, you have to look at the administration of civilian hospitals and their affiliations to get a peek at the real goings on in healthcare industry . Yes, this is an Industry! With all of the ills of a corrupt business and more. More, because they have the patients bend over a barrel and you are not an “ethical” businessman if you don’t take advantage of those who at a great disadvantage.

The great thing about healthcare industry is that “insurers” control the supply and demand, through their enforcers (legislators, lobbyists, judges, attorneys, AMA, State boards, DEA, FDA, EPA) they even control who, how, and how independent a care giver can be through control, of MCATS (a useless test), the controlled faculty, the printing of textbooks, the phoney research paid for by the pharmaceuticals, the courting of med students during education, paying for attendance at conferences, teaching them ethics (“Ethics”), and scaring the bejesus out of them before they ever set foot in a medical setting of “tort attorneys”.
It great that they got caught in the VA, this might help the overall system. No one would have paid attention to this abuse in the civil. A civilian patients gets reamed, but his protector (representative) is in on the scam.

    In Christ,

    Nasir

  6. These bureaucratic mandarins and one-percenters are the government of the US, not the footstools of both parties in congress who rob their own constituents to pay these salaries and millions more like them. These bureaucratic parasites and their lapdogs in congress are the enemy of the American people, and at this late stage of corruption it’s no exaggeration to say the mandarins of a conquering Chinese army would provide more honest service to the people.

    • Well said. And how are government embezzlers punished in China?

As opposed to someone say like John C. Beale…a former ‘senior analyst’ for the EPA who only got sentenced to 32 months in the slam.

Beginning in 2000, Beale began skipping work on occasional Wednesdays, continuing many times until his retirement in 2011. In his 2013 deposition, Beale said that he told an assistant administrator that he was working for the CIA, and that these days were spent working for the CIA’s Directorate of Operations. Beale would later admit that during these days he was at home reading or exercising.

In 2002, Beale was given a subsidized parking space because he had led his coworkers to believe that he had contracted malaria during the Vietnam War. Beale held the space until June 2005, costing a total of $8,000. He in fact never had malaria, and did not serve in Vietnam.

Beale claimed to be working on an EPA research project and drew $57,235 in travel expenses to Los Angeles, where he was in fact visiting family in nearby Bakersfield. The travel expenses covered first-class flights and stays in high-end hotels.

For a period of six months in 2008, Beale did not report to work for the EPA under the guise of his CIA work, but continued to draw his salary from the EPA. After retiring in 2011, he continued to draw his salary, and the temporary bonus that was supposed to cease in 2003 continued to be paid through 2013. By the time of his retirement, Beale was the highest paid employee in the EPA.

      Mad as hell?

  7. I researched the positions of the first 32 on your list. They are all Medical Officers, or physicians.

    Swartz; George J Orthropedic Surgeon
    Dossett; Harold G Orthropedic Surgeon
Joehl; Raymond J General Surgeon He has worked at Edward Hines VAMC in Illinois
    Lopchinsky; Richard A General Surgeon
    Kilpatrick; Danny B Radiologist

That is the first five. If you wish to verify their positions, please go to http //www.phoenix.va.gov/providerinfo/index.asp

Making a blanket statement that they are all “administrators” making the Big Bucks is disingenuous. It is important to do a little more research.

    • Male, Age 76. Dr. George Swartz is an orthopedic surgeon in Phoenix, Arizona. He is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System. He received his medical degree from University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and has been in practice for 49 years. He is one of 37 doctors at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and one of 14 at Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System who specialize in Orthopedic Surgery. No longer provides surgical services. Administrative services provided. Admissions Physician

    • Again, does not provide patient care…You will find that the VA masks the positions. There are 14 Orthopedic physicians at Hayden. 5 provide patient services.
Official Name Harold G. Dossett, MD MBA
      Principal Investigator
Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center

  8. Now you know what the 2 billion hollow points are for. To protect these legions of unscrupulous government parasites once the common people who worked their butt off, wake up and realize how badly they’ve been fd.

  9. Thank you for posting this. I sent this to Mr. Dean before he left to Syria. I also sent this to a few others in which I was shocked at one reply that I received. Former Military who’s sister worked for the VA in which he was so outraged not at the amount those VA employees made as a wage (A-Side from known PERKS) He told me me his sister receives but that he was MAD and was going to write our State REP that none of this (Employee Information) should at anyway be posted on the Internet.

So the privacy of employees like his sister means more to him then the fact of government spending and as a former veteran what salaries are received. I should add that he came home with all his limbs, has a great security job and makes great $$$ while I note others not so lucky can’t even get a handout of a free sandwich which in most states its illegal to give to the homeless now.

Thanks Mr. Dean for passing this on for print.

    • I should also mention that I too sent this to my State Rep. I hate the Military and Wars as a whole. Yet I support those who were lied to in these many conflagrations inasmuch as those who sit on their butts pushing pencils or watching porn at the pentagon on tax dollar supplied computers and IP services through taxes.

I cited to our Rep that American boys don’t return to parades and confetti, they are dumped on by the VA and labeled as domestic terrorist’s by the same government they allegedly fought for that screws them.
[NETWORK] You’ve got to get MAD!

  10. Howard T.Lewis III

I feel like I did when Dad took me to a trout farm. There they are! Trout from a trout farm are not nearly as tasty as wild caught. There they are though. Nice catch!!

ALL these leeches at the same time? No doctors, no care, no medical researchers. No shame? Just office boys?

  11. Preston James, Ph.D

Outstanding article. The corruption at the top levels of the VA is astounding and almost beyond imagination. Many should be charged under RICO as operating a criminal syndicate and this should include the corrupt Congressional committees that allowed this and even shared in the millions ripped off from taxpayers instead of going to Vets who desperately need care.

VATVA.org is a great idea and is the fastest way to expose and stop this massive corruption and theft of Taxpayer funds. I hope that every one who wants this VA corruption routed out joins and becomes a part of the solution. Can you imagine the political pressure VATVA will be able to apply to Congress with millions of members?

    • I looked also at Presidential pay.
President’s Salary Effective January 1, 2001, the annual salary of the President of the United States was increased to $400,000 per year, including a $50,000 expense

So some of these VA employee’s who do NOTHING for the veteran’s make almost as much as a President who also does NOTHING. Good trade?

  12. Thanks for this infuriating information Mr. Tatum.

I count 99 administrators all making more than $200,000 per year, some much more. And I assume that doesn’t include bonuses, and contributions to retirement. At a conservative cost estimate of $300,000 each, these people are pulling in almost $30 million a year. And this is just one VA hospital. What kind of salaries are being paid to the head bureaucrats in DC to manage the flunkies out in the sticks? It would scarcely be justifiable if any of them were actually doing a good job of providing veterans with timely and high quality health care, but they clearly are not doing that. I’d love to see the job titles associated with these salaries and, given that many top executive level positions in the federal government are filled by “presidential appointment,” what their contributions to Obama’s presidential campaigns may have been.

  13. Cut those VA salaries by 2/3rds and see if any resign to get the same money from other employers. Oh wait, they won’t need to, their pensions will set them up for life, leagues over the levels of we taxpayers. Where’s big mouth nut cake McCain on this? politiking?

  14. That’s how officials turn poverty into wealth. Works in every government, in every nation.

  15. Reduce Federal TAXES to 2 percent for US citizens and Corporations. That way folks and US business AND 50 American states wont have to worry if the Fed is wasting their money or NOT!

  16. 1) BONUS MONEY? The VA should be worry about going to jail!
    2) How can the VA get away with this?
This reminds of hagel cleaning up the pentagon. How far did that go! I can’t believe that the VA did this. Everyone wonders why there’s no money for the Veterans. I see it go to top of the food chain. I been fighting for my benefits for 7 1/2 years and I have to see this. This really makes me boil. I am so mad about what they’re doing to all of the Veterans. All the games we go through and the pain of getting denied and delayed. I have to go to a outside doctor to get my pain meds. The doctor at the VA like to see you a lot of pain. All of you should telling your stories bad or good.
VA Motto Deny, Deny, Delay, Delay until we die!
