The Defense Department is raising objections to key parts of a bipartisan veterans employment bill, but it may end up being costs — not those complaints — that force lawmakers to scale back on the ambitious legislation.

Leon E. Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee today that if he’s confirmed as the next defense secretary, his first and foremost mission will be to protect the United States and ensure it has the “best-trained, the best-equipped and the strongest military in the world” to provide that defense.

The lessons of Memorial Day can be summed up in a few words, President Barack Obama said here today: "Brotherhood. Sacrifice. Love of country"

Memorial Day is the day America sets aside each year to remember, honor, and give thanks to all those who answered their nation’s call and fell in battle. It is the day we formally recognize the cost of freedom and realize that price is not yet paid in full.

The American people have had enough of war creating more enemies abroad while killing our domestic agenda here at home. Our nation simply cannot afford another war, economically, diplomatically or spiritually. Congress must find its voice and the American people must call upon Congress to take the Administration off the war path

Flanked by the memorials of wars past, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates today said he has had no greater honor than serving and leading the U.S. military.

Among active-duty soldiers, there were 16 potential suicides: none have been confirmed as suicide, and 16 remain under investigation.

Memorial Day weekend in 2004 was a special time for me. My family drove to Chicago to watch me graduate from U.S. Navy Boot Camp with my fellow sailors in Recruit Division 184.

About a year ago, I had the honor of attending a dignified transfer for two soldiers who had been killed just a few days prior in Afghanistan.

As our Nation marks the 150th anniversary of the first year of the Civil War, this weekend we observe Memorial Day, a tradition that originated following the toll that terrible conflict levied upon our Nation.

ATSDR’s health survey will compare two groups from Lejeune and Pendleton, two Superfund sites with expected higher incidences of cancer and other diseases.

Americans can share personal notes of encouragement and thanks through Applebee’s Honor a Veteran Web site this Memorial Day weekend. As Americans honor fallen U.S. soldiers this holiday, the Web site helps connect Veterans and civilians with one another – today and every day.

Since 1990, with the development of the Total Assistance Program (TAP), which was suppose to meet the needs of military personnel and their families by providing the skills, tools, knowledge, and self-confidence necessary for a successful re-entry to the civilian world, things have moved slowly.

The White House on Tuesday launched a national initiative that focuses on the employment, education and wellness of military personnel and their families.

Last night on Public Television here in Charlotte, NC, there was a great program about Outpost Harry in North Korea and the battle waged there in 1953…almost unknown by the people back home in the States at the time, and long forgotten accept by those who survived the battle. Why bring this up today one [...]

To help combat the growing trend of suicide by servicemembers, The USAA Educational Foundation collaborated with the DoD Suicide Prevention and Risk Reduction Committee (SPARRC) to produce a publication focused on suicide prevention.

For a soldier making the transition from military life to civilian is far different in the era of an all volunteer military. It can be an unbelievable challenge for those who have returned from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, because unlike previous wars where combat duty entailed a single deployment to the war zone, many of those serving today have been deployed 2, 3, or more times in a period as short as four years, with little R&R in between.

Despite the fact that both the Bush and Obama Administration have made it easier for Americans to go to war, since most U.S. citizens have never been asked by either administration or any political party to share in the sacrifice of our troops and military families, both the conservatives and so called liberals have been able to neutralize the anti-war movement (defined as pure pacifists) into being as much of a nuisance as a mosquito on an elephant.
On March 2, 2011, The Army announced it had filed 22 additional charges against Pfc. Bradley E. Manning, the soldier suspected of providing classified government documents published by the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group. The counts against him involve the leaking of the Afghan and Iraq war logs as well as the quarter million State Department cables disseminated last year.
Since when did the Constitution or the Bill of Rights allow free speech to take hostages? That is what we’re talking about when families are forced to listen to a group of hateful people stalking, harassing and intimidating them. Every time there is a military funeral, families have to add in Westboro showing up as [...]
As a mark of respect for the memory of Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, the last surviving American veteran of World War I, and in remembrance of the generation of American veterans of World War I, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that, on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day.
If Bradley Manning turns out to be the hero he appears to be, he will not be the first “detained” at Quantico. In fact, Quantico once locked up the most decorated Marine in history, a Marine who would have been running the Marine Corps rather than getting locked up by it if he had known how to brown-nose the swivel-chair commanders as he called them, a Marine who had helped create Quantico years before, the first senior officer in the U.S. military to be arrested in the 65 years following the Civil War, and a serious fearless principled democratic hero whose heroism had nothing to do with the nasty tasks he took on as a U.S. Marine.
Controversy over American military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan is common. America has been at war for over ten years. Children of troops that fought America’s enemies in the first days of the war on terror are now fighting too. There is no end in sight. Very well intended people like to point out that The United States failed to comply with what has become to be called the “Powell Doctrine” after General Colin Powell.
