World War II

During WW II, 168 airmen of various allied countries were shot down by the enemy behind enemy lines. Through betrayals and hardships, instead of becoming prisoners of war, these men found themselves sentenced to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Miraculously, almost all the airmen survived. But our US airmen who suffered at the hands of the Gestapo, were not allowed to talk about it when they returned home. Until now. “Lost Airmen of Buchenwald” is a riveting documentary of this exceptional and true story.

On the eve of the 50th Anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials, it is appropriate that I share with my English-speaking readerships a few reflections pertaining to those trials. I’d like to start with a revealing and thought-provoking quote coming from none other than Nahum Goldman, long-time president of the World Jewish Congress, in a book entitled The Jewish Paradox.

When you’re a little kid in school or at the movies, resisting Judaism can be made to seem a very wicked thing. As an adult, you can be made to think that to resist Judaism is the very worst, the most dangerous thing. When you see what has happened to people who have resisted Judaism, well – you certainly don’t want that to happen to you.

“Blind Obedience” to orders is an often-heard left-wing liberal rant in reference to those of us who have made a career in the military. Left-wing types demean and insult too – men and women who complete a tour in the military and decide to move into civilian life following honorable and proud service. Leftist views include military folks blindly obeying orders. Very different from the real world of military life. Consider:

On August 27th 1943, a German Luftwaffe long-range photo reconnaissance bomber, a Junkers Ju-390 took off from its base in Norway and flew out across the Atlantic Ocean. Among its four man crew was a brave and daring woman Anna Kreisling, the ‘White Wolf of the Luftwaffe’. A nickname she had acquired because of her frost blonde hair and icy blue eyes. Anna was one of the top pilots in Germany and even though she was only the co-pilot on this mission, her flying ability was crucial to its success.

That was the argument made in a U.S. bestseller in 2009 written by a WWII historian whose father had raised the US flag on Iwo Jima. And the Roosevelt he had in mind was Teddy, not Franklin.
Needless to say, although countless people will say it quite angrily in my Email inbox in response to this article, you cannot simply blame an event on actions that occurred years before. A war is started by the people who start that war, in that instant, and there is no way for them to wiggle out of that responsibility. But, as everyone is eager to recognize when the context is more comfortable, all actions have consequences, and those consequences have further consequences. (As a warning that may further temper the vitriol, I would like to point out that Teddy was not a Democrat.)
