March 11, 2010 by Bob Higgins · 7 Comments
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides are some of the additional catastrophes that climate change and its rising sea levels and melting glaciers could bring, a geologist says.

Equality and the Good Life, Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better
March 7, 2010 by Bob Higgins · Leave a Comment
We live in a world of deep inequality, and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. We in the rich world generally agree that this is a problem we ought to help fix—but that the real beneficiaries will be the billions of people living in poverty. After all, inequality has little impact on the lives of those who find themselves on top of the pile.
Evolution by the Grassroots

We live in the age of grass. Indeed, from our point of view, the evolution of grasses was one of the most momentous events in the history of the Earth. Which is why I’m nominating them for Life-form of the Month: March.

The Chilean Earthquake and God’s Wrath
March 2, 2010 by Bob Higgins · 2 Comments
According to religious prognosticators, sinners will suffer the wrath of god in the form of earthquakes as biblical punishment for their errant ways. The declarations and explanations of such divine calamities always come after the fact, but let us not have such annoying details get in our way. Nobody is more out front in decoding god’s will than Robertson; he declared that the devastating earthquake in Haiti was a consequence of Haitians making a pact with the devil.

ShareBack in the 1960’s The group of Ham operators known as MARS, offered to make calls in the USA and connect them by radio (2 way air waves), and the Soldiers could call home. It cost $20.00 for three minutes, which was a lot of money back then, but still there were long lines, to [...]

Health Means Life; Health Means Freedom
by George Lakoff
Life and Freedom are moral issues. It is time for Democrats to talk about health in those terms, beyond just policy terms like health insurance reform, bending the cost curve, types of exchanges, etc.
Health means life. If you [...]
13 Ridiculous Things You Didn’t Know About U.S. Presidents
February 18, 2010 by Bob Higgins · Leave a Comment
Exactly what kind of person does it take to lead a nation? So this President’s Day, instead of honoring our commanders-in-chief for the great things they did, why not honor them for the bizarre things they did?
A War Prayer

ShareThe War Prayer
It was a time of great and exalting excitement. The country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism; the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched firecrackers hissing and sputtering; on every hand and far down the receding [...]

Many Christians are repeatedly told by their pastors, teachers, and church leaders that America was founded as a Christian nation. This assertion would not be so bad if it were confined to the arrival of the Puritans at Plymouth and the early development of the new world. If that were the case, it would be an accurate statement, in this writer’s opinion.

This bled into a rant about American history. “The secular humanists may argue that we are a secular nation,” McLeroy said, jabbing his finger in the air for emphasis. “But we are a Christian nation founded on Christian principles. The way I evaluate history textbooks is first I see how they cover Christianity and Israel. Then I see how they treat Ronald Reagan — he needs to get credit for saving the world from communism and for the good economy over the last twenty years because he lowered taxes.”

Crazy Continues: Starbucks Still Allowing Guns in Its Stores
February 10, 2010 by Bob Higgins · 4 Comments
Welcome to the “open carry” movement, an effort by “gun rights” extremists to foist their interpretation of the Second Amendment on the rest of us by openly carrying handguns in public places. While virtually all states have at least some minimal restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons, few states do anything to regulate the “open carry” of firearms.
The 9 Most Ridiculous Reasons Kids Have Been Arrested
February 10, 2010 by Bob Higgins · Leave a Comment
Kids act out. They throw tantrums, have food fights, and occasionally, they open their Christmas presents a little early. Usually this type of behavior is met with a stern word from parents, detention, or even some Bart Simpson-esque chalkboard writing. But this was not the case for these kids, who were handcuffed and hauled away before they could say “It wasn’t me.”
Celebrating 100 years of Hallmark card history
February 10, 2010 by Donna Teresa · Leave a Comment
Postcards, greeting cards and letters have been a vital source of communication for military families during times of war and peacetime. They were essential to help families stay in touch.
If the contents carried good news, they were a great morale booster for troops during difficult times of combat and loss. Cards also were a source of comfort for military families enduring the tragedy of losing a loved one.
Extinction Threatens World’s Butt-Ugliest Fish
February 8, 2010 by Bob Higgins · 2 Comments
Without the redeeming good looks of other endangered species, the rather unfortunate-looking but aptly-named blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) may not figure in anyone’s glitzy conservation campaign. Nevertheless, the fact is that this jiggly, jelly-like creature is threatened with extinction, thanks to the overfishing antics of deep sea trawlers scraping the bottom of Australian and New Zealand waters.
