Hundreds of thousands of servicemen were exposed to asbestos over decades, especially during the period from 1940 to 1980.  Asbestos was used in construction of naval vessels as well as shore facilities.  All branches of the military used asbestos, which was also widely used in civilian applications.  Asbestos can cause mesothelioma.  Because this cancer has a particularly long latency period, many servicemen who were exposed years ago are now developing this disease.

ARE YOU READY? Buy the Book on Amazon.com Army Veteran  publishes book about stroke

On May 23, 2007, author Philip R. Hanaburgh, a U.S. Army Veteran, suffered a stroke that left him unable to use his left side. In his moving and inspirational memoir, Are You Ready?, he offers advice, practical wisdom, and tips for anyone going through any sort of devastating medical episode, particularly a stroke.

Realizing that the market is filled with medical books about strokes, Hanaburgh seeks to reach readers on a more spiritual level, intimating that terrible experiences that force us to confront our mortality and death can actually lead us into richer, fuller lives. Warmly written, Are You Ready? is a testament to the indomitable spirit of one courageous man.

A Book About Surviving a Stroke

Strokes, silent and deadly interruptions of the blood supply to the brain, come without warning. Would you be ready if you were suddenly felled by one? Author and stroke victim Philip R. Hanaburgh certainly wasn't. Just fifty years old, he was a contented family man with a good job, when he had a stroke that left him without the use of his left side. Rushed to the hospital in a helicopter, Hanaburgh endured a long recovery period, but soon realized that love, deep faith, and inner strength could help him survive and even triumph over this adversity.

ARE YOU READY?
Philip Hanaburgh reveals his long journey back to some sort of normalcy, offering insight and helpful information along the way. Warmly written and deeply spiritual, Are You Ready? gives inspirational advice and guidance to stroke victims, their families, and their caregivers.

About the Author
Philip R. Hanaburgh enlisted in the Army in 1976 and volunteered for both Airborne and Ranger training. Currently a contractor and carpenter, he lost the use of his left side due to a stroke. He and Paola, his wife of twenty-nine years, have two children and two grandchildren.

"I must admit, I originally bought this book because I know the author and wanted to be supportive. But wow! Was I ever surprised! While reading it I realized this book is good - actually better than good. It offers valuable information, humor, and inspiration. What can be better than that?? Sure we all know the standard symptoms of a stroke (someone who can't smile or hold their arms above their head) but I NEVER heard the others mentioned in this book. Making your way back from something so devastating has to be frustrating and difficult, but Phil does it with courage (after all he was an Army Ranger), humor, and the love and support of his family and faith. He not only inspires us, and anyone facing a challenge, but he manages to make us laugh in spite of the seriousness of the subject. Bravo Phil. I'm looking forward to a sequel."  S Gibson

"What a wonderful inspirational book!!! I have always been a believer in positive thought when it comes to illness, and Phil Hanaburgh is a testament to the power of faith and positive thinking. Instead of sinking into depression and giving up, this brave and strong man fought his way back from the brink of death to live a full, complete and meaningful life. This book grabs you from the first page, and is hard to put down. It is informative on so many levels - it's message can applied to any serious illness or just to life in general, and I highly recommend it to everyone!!!!" Gayle Soto
