Hundreds of thousands of servicemen were exposed to asbestos over decades, especially during the period from 1940 to 1980.  Asbestos was used in construction of naval vessels as well as shore facilities.  All branches of the military used asbestos, which was also widely used in civilian applications.  Asbestos can cause mesothelioma.  Because this cancer has a particularly long latency period, many servicemen who were exposed years ago are now developing this disease.

Important Information
for Veterans:

Asbestos products were often used on military ships and within military housing, and Veterans may have been exposed. News: Fighting for Sepulveda VA hospital's return

Lester and Mary Gentry made a wonderful, magnanimous gesture to the San Fernando Valley 57 years ago. The couple donated 160 acres they owned in North Hills so the government could build a veterans hospital.

So many returning World War II and Korean War veterans were settling in the San Fernando Valley to work and raise families that it only made sense to have a nearby hospital and medical treatment and care facility for them. By 1993, with the Vietnam War adding to the caseload, more than 275,000 veterans a year were treated at Sepulveda VA. Then everything changed in 1994. We had a major earthquake.

VA officials claimed there had been too much damage done to the buildings. For safety's sake, they would have to be torn down or left empty.

And since VA officials said it would be way too expensive to rebuild the damaged hospital, they essentially told vets to hit the 405 Freeway and take their serious medical problems to the West L.A. VA facility just a short two-hour, bumper-to-bumper drive away.

It was all a smokescreen, a chance for VA officials to save some money, downsize and gut Sepulveda.

The hospital was demolished and never rebuilt. Buildings were judged unsafe, yet today the same buildings are being rented out to movie and TV companies to film, including "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Unit."

The VA makes millions every year renting the buildings out, but it can't seem to find a dime to bring back lost medical services for our local veterans.

"I've got letters from producers that state clearly no production company would ever allow its cast and crew inside unsafe, unsound buildings," says Peggy Burgess, who is rapidly becoming a major thorn in the VA's side.

"They sent in fire and safety inspectors. Everything's perfectly safe."

Burgess, a member of the North Hills West Neighborhood Council, smelled a scam. In 2004, the retired businesswoman became the point person for nine other neighborhood councils and hundreds of angry vets drawing a line in the sand.

Enough is enough. Give us back our hospital.

Veterans owe a BIG thanks to Peggy Burgess! She has been a Godsend for Veterans in their ongoing battle with A Community of Friends, a "non-profit developer," an oxymoron if ever there was one, and the "new" New Directions, which are trying to steal two medical buildings and seven acres at the Sepulveda VA with a 75-year, $1 a year lease to build 147 apartments with $50 of taxpayers' money.

Peggy has led the charge in garnering the San Fernando Valley's residential support in opposing this egregious land grab, and fostered support to protect Veterans land and medical facilities at the Sepulveda VA.

Peggy is 180 degrees from Sue Young, executive director of Veteans Park Conservancy, which is not a Veterans organization by any stretch, but a wealthy West LA homeowners group. Young used her wealth and political connections to confiscate 16 acres of Veterans land at West LA VA for a public park, and she got the billioin-dollar parcel "rent free" in a 30-year sweetheart deal.

While Peggy has defended Veterans property and kept the community and businesses out of the Sepulveda VA, Sue Young has led the charge to invade and conquer Veterans property at the West LA VA. What a differnce in missions

And a BIG thanks to Dennis McCarthy for writing the article about Peggy's successes at the Sepulveca VA. It is rare that Veterans ever get any favorable coverage by any of the media.

t' time for Secretary Shensiki to do the right thing and rescind the ACOF/ND lease at the Sepulveda VA and the public park agreement at the West LA VA.

Ooops! That's $50 Million of taxpayers' money for the 147 units. That's nearly $350,000 per 400 square foot unit, and it doesn't include the land or existing buildings that they are simply renovating. ACOF / ND could buy each resident a very nice home for that much money. So where's the money really going?

If this country had more people like Peggy Burgess, perhaps we could get to the bottom of problems the VA has or at least veterans know they have. God Bless her!
