Iraq - War, Elections, Terror? Get in and give it to us straight!
Is it worth it?
Since the war began, there have been over 1,569 American military deaths. Over 12,000 soldiers have been injured. Of those 12,000 over 6,000 were not return to duty. Nearly half a billion dollars have been paid out in S.G.L.I. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of money spent by the government with all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines deployed.
I spent my time in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division with the initial round of deployments. It effects you for years or maybe forever. Is this war really worth it? What do we get out of it? As of now, Iraq isn't any better of a country. The people are still in fear. Maybe years down the road the country will be better. It's going to be difficult if not impossible to capture, kill, or stop all of the insurgents. When one falls into one of these categories, another one steps up to replace him.
After WW2 ended, former Nazi's that were loyal to Hitler's ideas still attacked the townspeople, the city and country officials, etc.. It took the people to finally stand up and say "No More !!" If the Iraqi's can't fight back for themselves and try to stop these insurgents themselves then this will never end.
Other countries are now nervous of the United States and what we might do next. Is this a good thing? I don't think so. I think it will make other countries more defensive and agressive towards the US and maybe all of NATO. North Korea is going to do their own thing and things won't change for a long time over there....at least until their President Kim Jong-II changes power. Iranian President Mohammed Khatami seems to be doing his own thing too and has appeared more aggressive since the Iraq Invasion.
The world is not at peace and our invasion of Iraq did not help things one single bit.
Don't get me wrong now, I love my country and will fight for its freedom. When ordered to fight for other countries freedom, I have done that and if ordered to do so again, then so be it...I will pick up my M-4 or M-16 and defend or attack. I am glad that I am within a few years of retirement. I hope that I will not have to be deployed again within that time and I pray for those that are deployed.
Let's bring our troops home!
