VA Issues - Veterans Administration Issues

"NEW" VA ID cards "

The VA has recently been sending out its latest VA ID card.
The letter received with it states:

In recognition of the sacrificies made by former POW's and Purple Heart recipients in service for our country, the VA has added POW and PH designation on the VA card under your photo.
If you have a service connected disability it will state under your photo" as in my case.

"Service Connected"
"Purple Heart"

If you have not received your call your VA office.

The designator of "POW" or "Purple Heart" on your ID card is supposed to give you preference when visiting the VA.

New Veterans I.D. Card from the Veterans Administration

Yeah, I received this note from a veteran today

"How do I go about getting a I. D. card to prove that I am a Vet? I have been asked for a I.D. card on several occasions and I have nothing to show ? My I.D. # Us XXXXXXXX I served in the Army in the early 60's. Thanks for your help. Joe"

Okay Joe! The Department of Veterans Affairs is providing a Veterans Identification Card (VIC) for veterans to use at VA medical facilities. The VIC will be issued only to veterans who are eligible for VA medical benefits and only for the purpose of identification and check-in for VA medical appointments. The new card protects personal privacy by not showing Social Security Numbers or dates of birth on the front of the cards.

VA has Service Connected, POW and Purple Heart (PH) indicators on the new VIC. Veterans who have been awarded service-connected status after their VIC has been issued or SC status is not properly documented on their card, will need to present their letter showing their SC rating to the eligibility clerk at the local VA Medical Center where they obtain treatment. After verification, the eligibility clerk will submit a request to National Card Management Directory (NCMD) System for a new card to be issued to the veteran.

Once a veteran has his/her picture taken for the new card at the VA medical facility, the card will be mailed to the veteran at the address that has been provided. To ensure that a veteran receives the new VIC card, the veteran should please verify that VA has the correct address on file. If the U.S. Postal Service cannot deliver the card, it will be returned to the facility at which the card was requeted. The card will then be held in a secure location at the facility for 90 days. If the card is not picked up within the 90-day period, the card will be destroyed.

You have to go to the VA Hospital or Center to get it.
Hope this helps

Sorry, I refuse to give the VA my picture. I don't let them take my picture. Period.

Therefore, I do not have one of the new ID cards. And I don't want one. I have enough of the old cards.

And I made the VA (medical) remove my Social Security Number from all my medical records. "Can't do it" they told me. Well, I wrote VA headquarters in Washington. The letter states that the VA medical cannot make me use my Social Security Number for identity purposes in any VA facility.

How many numbers does the VA need? My Service Number (before the SSN became the number) or my VA Claim Number. That's two numbers they already have.

I still get all my medical benefits. I still see all needed physicians. I just use my state issued ID - driver's license - as identification.

Do you really think that putting on the ID card "purple heart" or "pow" makes any difference to that GS-5 clerk at the VA hospital?

And what about that VA laptop that was stolen? Anyone ever heard of "Identity Theft"? Ya, ya, they "found" the laptop. Don't worry.

John Allen, when I received my new VA ID card when it was issued, a new photo was taken then they mailed the card to me, took couple days and received it with no issues.

perfumeriver let me ask you a question does your current ID card have your ss # etc on it ? If so it is for that reason it was removed..identity theft.

As far as having service connected, PH, POW labled on it is deffinatley there for a reason..priority in care, at least here in New York. In these days of shortages at the VA, it does and will make a difference, unless of course you have health issues and have been in the system for some time now. The only time the VA asks me for my ss#, last 4 digits is when I am in the hospotal. Over the phone I never provide it to them.

Yeah we all wonder about these laptops disappearing.

Be well all
