Should We Bring Back The Draft?
It seems the services are having trouble meeting their quotas, especially the Army and the Marine Corps, so what do ya'll think about bringing back a draft?
the U.S. CANNOT RETREAT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.......it's too late for that now.
The Middle East must become democratic now.....the time of Kings and Dictators is over.........and in the end, the people of the region will embrace freedom, even the extremists who hate - thus, I pray and hope that our leaders can bring those who hold on to the past paradigms into line via negotiation. If not, yes, the use of force is needed and draft may be needed.
As Americans, I believe if called upon for the RIGHT reasons, the people will respond.......but only for the right reasons.
If Ibn Hafez Assad of Syria decides to hold ground like Saddam, he must go too! The Saudis have for all intents and purposes use that country as their business. They will divest, move to Paris - I think they did already - and move on......
Oppression is a dead idea.......Freedom, Human Rights, etc..... must prevail and it will return back to the U.S.A. as Americans re-embrace their heritage....
We cannot go back now.........
I welcome your comments, questions so excercise your freedoms!
Go for it!
The Draft?
Am all for bringing back the draft if our country was in danger.
But the war on Iraq was a misleading war that should not have happened. our poor boys and girls have been killed for what? We were sold on it as a retaliation for 9/11 & the WMD's, which was a major falacy. We have now created a country that is hotbed for terrorism and tarnished our name all over the world. Americans are not safer today that they were before Iraq, if anything they are in danger more now than ever!
Draft for the Right Reasons
Yes, I do agree with your assertions.......the operative word in my reply was "RIGHT" meaning that we can't DRAFT using misleading statements such as the fight for "weapons of mass destruction". Frankly, that sales pitch will only start a riot and people now are very skeptical and will demand proof and more than just the word of Colin Powel or President Bush.....the compelling reason must be REAL and GENIUNE.
Just like in all sales, if the sales pitch is just, right, and honest, you don't have to lie.......you just tell and sell. If you lie and get caught and clients get burned, it's over........
If we get to that point, President Bush must sell us geniunely so that the country clearly understands the reason for a DRAFT, otherwise, the deal is over and we will lose.......IT MUST BE COMPELLING, TRUE, AND HONEST at all times.......
That's just my opinion
50/50
My feelings are mixed concerning the draft. I think it would be good to have a draft because it would make the children of these anti-war activists get a taste of what it's like to be one of us. They could see the war through the eyes of a U.S. troop. I would also like to see the children of some of these politicians, who are so eager to play politics with the lives of U.S. troops, get drafted and get a dose of our everyday life. However, I would feel better serving alongside troops who have volunteered for service instead of some draftee. I feel like a draftee would be more likely to abandon the rest of the troops or be unwilling to fight. A volunteer is there by choice, therefore, a volunteer is more likely to take care of his or her fellow troops and get the job done better. I wouldn't want to send someone's son or daughter home in a flag-draped, metal box because some draftee decided that they didn't want to fire back at the enemy or stay at the front and help protect their comrades.
Rodney, it seems to me like most of the peace activists right now ARE people who have lost someone or have a child in the war.
I hear ya on having the children of the peeps in Congress get drafted, though! I think that's a great idea. I think all Congressmen big business that has profited from the war should have had to send their kids who were of service-age first. I wnder if the war would have happened at all then?!
I have to agree with Paula on this one.
I should have been more clear about the children of the anti-war activists. I'm not talking about those who have lost children or have children serving. Those people have suffered enough, and they have every right, both moral and Constitutional, to protest this war. I'm talking about the people who don't care about the troops. I'm talking about those who choose to degrade troops rather than support them and appreciate them for what they do. I received a lot of negative attention when I returned from Afghanistan, and it really pissed me off. I want those ignorant, heartless people to have THEIR children sent off to war or have the protesters themselves sent. Then again, with them there, they would probably meet their demise through a "friendly fire" incident. I feel that all politicians should have to serve in the military before taking office. That way, they would know what it's like to be one of us, and they wouldn't look at us like chess pieces. Of course, my political opinion is limited since I'm in the military. I will say this, though. I would love to see a politician's child go through the hell I went through. Maybe then, Daddy would listen.
Wow, Rodney... I'm sorry if I came off rude or glib. Thank you for your service to our country. I guess I just know a lot of people IRL who aren't for this war but they ARE for our troops staying safe and supporting them when they come home.
I'm so sorry you've had to deal with a lot of assholes treating you badly. I just can't imagine! What could they hold you responsible for?
Yes, I definitely agree that everyone in government should have had to serve some time in the military. I just don't see it happening.
And as for people protesting the war having to go or send their kids...I don't agree. They have the right to protest. I just don't think they have the right to treat our troops badly. It really stuns me that this is happening.
I thought everyone supported the troops unlike in some past wars..?
OK, and about a draft...Would anyone really want someone fighting beside them that had no desire to be there of their own free will? I wouldn't. But it does seem like a draft is a necessary evil if we're going to continue this war and maybe even start another one. Maybe the answer is not to continue the war!

You have a friend in the national politics section.
So you don't think that Iraq would have been a problem for us or anyone, right? Just leave the murdering dictator to die of old age, right? Or let the murdering dictator bother his neighbors that we rely on for our oil, right?
Stop using oil? Right! When the sun stops setting!
"In danger more now than ever!" How do you know what was planned next after 9/11?
So we don't attack Iraq and we leave a nice playground for the terrorists to go to called Iraq so they can safely plan their next move? Just like they used Afghanistan. How safe would we have been then? Then we throw in a scientist or two on the murdering dictators payroll that can help the terrorists get something much more fun to use than an airplane. Oh yes, much less danger!
Right! When the sun stops setting!
I love you people who can't stomach the U.S being a world leader and the responsibility that carries. Just stick our head in the sand and everything will be okay, right? We've been there and done that. Or did you not pay attention in history class my liberal American friend?
I am fully recommended to who have army or Navy they were directly serve whole life to protrct their country.
