Longtime VT writer Sherwood Ross has passed at 85

Award-winning VT reporter Sherwood Ross (1933-2018) has passed on to the next expose story

Journalist Sherwood Ross, who handled publicity for civil rights leader James Meredith's 1966 "March Against Fear" and tended to the civil rights leader's wounds after he was shot, has died at 85.

Sherwood (1933-2018) was a kind gentle soul who dedicated his life to doing good.  He posted on VT for 9 years; from April 2, 2007 until July 7, 2016.

Sherwood Ross was an award-winning reporter. He served in the U.S Air Force where he contributed to his base newspaper. He later worked for The Miami Herald and Chicago Daily News. He contributed a weekly column on working for a major wire service. He was also an editorial and book publicist. He resided in Florida.

He passed away June 21st from complications due to a brain injury he sustained in 2016.

His last article was published on July 7, 2016. This was at the time of his accident and shows how he was active and expressive to the last moment. He made such an big positive impact with his activism for civil and human rights. His impact is highlighted in obituaries that are being published and how his memory is being shared and perpetuated in his home town of Miami, Florida and throughout the country.

It is interesting to note that Sherwood’s “hit” song “I Sliced Pastrami for the C.I.A.” resides in the Smithsonian Folkways folk archives!

A public tribute to Sherwood is being held at the Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida on August 16th.  He was admired, respected and well-liked among the political activists, folk singers and poets in the Miami community.

Truly, he is already missed. VT is lessor today than when Sherwood was on top of things. There is no replacement for a Sherwood Ross; just an unfulfilled hole. VT will keep up the good effort in his memory always.

  1. Sean Ross, one of Sherwoods sons, mentions through Ross on Radio, that his Dad worked on several R and B radio stations with the Sonderling Group. His song I Sliced Pastrami for the CIA And Found God was aired, at least once, on the Dr. Demento Show. With all his great accomplishments in Civil Rights, Journalism and Broadcast Marketing, he was also pretty cool.

  2. We should all be so lucky to live to 85. If I was offered a contract on it, I would take it. Sherwood never really retired, and neither will we. I was in my junior year at Berkshire school when he was on the civil rights front lines. Little did I know then that our lives would cross.

  4. The Miami Herald and the Chicago Sun Times did a great job on his life through the 60s. We were fortunate to have him in this world. Peace to his family in their time of grief.
