U.K. OKs Use of Third, Less Expensive COVID-19 Vaccine

Health Editor’s Note: Britain today authorized the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. While the two first approved vaccines must be kept in ultracold freezers until used, this third vaccine can be stored in normal refrigerators for 6 months and thus will be far easier to be dispensed. Also, the U.K. has decided to delay holding vaccines to be used for the second dose which completes the COVID-19 vaccination process and using these doses for first doses.  Amazingly, this vaccine costs only $3 to $4 a dose.

Let’s hope that the rest of the world follows suit…..Carol

  1. Continued comment: We are hearing that vaccines are being used for those in congress (some of whom have denigrated the use of masks and science, but yet there they are getting the vaccine-angering, maybe those who pay lots of money to go to the top of the line. While we hear these stories, we can become, untrustful, but now we will have a third vaccine, that is cheaper and can be more easily handled because it does not need the super cooling the first two need. I hold licenses as a registered nurse in both Ohio and Michigan and no one has called me to see if I would like to volunteer in the vaccination process. I would volunteer in a heart beat.

  2. keaneperson, I am disappointed in the vaccine roll-out process. I am not seeing the transparency that we had with the vaccine drug companies as they have sought emergency use for their vaccines and even transparency from the FDA as it goes through its duties to analyze the effectiveness of these vaccines.
Leaving the roll-out to each individual state is crazy. There should be one plan, one time-line, that addresses most needy and then continues down the line. More comment to come:
Healthcare workers, elderly in nursing and care homes, etc. Unfortunately I am not in charge. I believe that all nursing home facilities could be done quickly as there is a captive audience so to speak. How about older veterans? Copious records are kept on these people, where they live, phone numbers. How about letting them know when they will be in line to get the vaccine? I have one of those at this house. No contact whatsoever from the VA. More comment to come:
