It’s a shame that no American president can speak openly without “wrapping” their words in hyperbole. Thus, Obama’s key speech, making startling admissions of American wrongdoing and mistakes, will be misunderstood and mischaracterized, either because it was incomprehensibly written or purposefully misconstrued.

One key failure of the Obama administration has been his failure to close the illegal detention facility at Guantanamo, Cuba.

However, his statement below and other key areas of his May 23, 2013 policy address may well indicate, not just a final fulfillment of that promise but a beginning to redress some of America’s behaviors that have led to so much suffering.

In order to hold someone to account, it is necessary to actually know what has been said. Toward that end, we will look at what President Obama has promised. We will also examine those critical areas that represent a real policy change and, either give credit where credit is due, or if these initiatives are not followed up on, have a rational basis for criticism.

President Obama addresses the issue of Guantanamo:

“So we bring law of war detention to an end, and we are committed to prosecuting terrorists whenever we can.

The glaring exception to this time-tested approach is the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. The original premise for opening GTMO – that detainees would not be able to challenge their detention – was found unconstitutional five years ago. In the meantime, GTMO has become a symbol around the world for an America that flouts the rule of law. Our allies won’t cooperate with us if they think a terrorist will end up at GTMO…

As President, I have tried to close GTMO. I transferred 67 detainees to other countries before Congress imposed restrictions to effectively prevent us from either transferring detainees to other countries or imprisoning them here in the United States.

These restrictions make no sense. After all, under President Bush, some 530 detainees were transferred from GTMO with Congress’s support… there is no justification beyond politics for Congress to prevent us from closing a facility that should never have been opened.

Today, I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from GTMO.

Even after we take these steps, one issue will remain: how to deal with those GTMO detainees who we know have participated in dangerous plots or attacks, but who cannot be prosecuted – for example because the evidence against them has been compromised or is inadmissible in a court of law. But once we commit to a process of closing GTMO, I am confident that this legacy problem can be resolved, consistent with our commitment to the rule of law.”

As there have been no denials as to the accuracy of key aspects of the statement above, congress, long cited as “in thrall” to the AIPAC lobby, is exposed for its active and continuing role in constitutional abuses.

The media, though airing a speech few listened to, purposefully and systematically chose to censor and edit what was actually said.

Were they to have done their job in a manner consistent with free speech and journalistic ethics, the following points would have been paramount:

• President Obama admitted that the United States had backed groups in Syria that are terrorist led and that he believes, if that aid continues, would lead Syria to a period of sectarian slaughter. He didn’t vow to end aid to rebels but admitted that rebel military groups are both extremist and radicalized and represent a danger to the world.

• President Obama clearly stated that the United States and engaged in torture in direct violation of international law. No attempt was made to justify American acts nor was any attempt made to describe “waterboarding” as other than torture or attempt to mischaracterize America’s illegal acts as limited to waterboarding only. No promise was made, we note, to turn those who took part in such acts or authorized their use, over to the International Criminal Court at The Hague, as is required.

• President Obama clearly pointed out that America’s rendition program is illegal; that military tribunals are a violation of both US law and international convention and that the United States has been operating outside the law continually.

• Many who listened to Obama’s speech believed drone strikes were being defended. This is far from the case. What we did learn is that the American congress has been briefed and has been fully complicit in all drone strikes other than those inside Iraq and Afghanistan, which are done under direct military command. We did learn that President Obama sees drone strikes as an element of radicalization. What was there to be heard, were one to wade through misdirection and obfuscation, was an admission that drone polices have been illegal and that oversight is needed.

• President Obama admitted that the incursion into Pakistan to murder Osama bin Laden was a political disaster for the United States and an abuse of Pakistan’s sovereignty. Obama acknowledged, not just that Muslims are the primary victims of terrorism but that Pakistan has lost thousands of troops in support of the United States. These facts have been kept from the American public for years.

• President Obama clearly stated that no armed drones could legally be used over American territory. As of his making that statement, any requests by law enforcement to use armed drones is now a criminal act, constituting not just “conspiracy” but “terrorism” as well.

• A key admission, one stated twice during Obama’s speech, involved the issue of fighting an unending war, even a “drone only” war. Obama was clear, political changes in the US tied to a decade of war have led to constitutional abuses, illegal laws, police state tactics and that no democratic government can survive during war. Such a statement would never have been made unless it was meant to convey and admission that America’s constitution has not survived and that American rights are being violated on a daily basis.

• A major component on President Obama’s policy statement covered issues of surveillance and abuses of individual privacy. Of late, “legal opinions” have backed warrantless interception of almost all private communications. As there is no longer a widely used “wire backbone” for telephone service, with mobile, VOIP (voice over internet protocol) and Skype-like services now the norm, “Federalists,” the right wing extremist group now controlling America’s legal system, see an opportunity to intercept everything, not just email and “chat.” It is the hope of many that Obama’s promises will help curtail those broad assaults on American’s lives that have intensified over the past few weeks.

• Perhaps the most important policy change is Obama’s admission that the broad congressional authorization of the use of military force both no longer needed and has, in itself, become a threat. What is clearly stated and missed by the media is that the constitutional basis for continuous warfare has to be ended. This is a powerful issue, one that would declare an end to the ability to send troops into any theatre of operations, one often abused and one that those cynical of America’s intentions now belief has been driven more by economic issues than those of security. The most critical admission made was that American presidents should not have wartime powers in perpetuity. Obama has promised to enact policies to rein in his own ability to fight discretionary and admittedly “unnecessary wars.”

• Toward that end, the President has asked that the AUMF (Authorized Use of Military Force) be ended, that expansion of that mandate be curtailed and that tighter controls be put in place for any future authorizations of that type. What is not being said, but may well be read into this, is that special interest groups that seek to push America into wars have become such a threat that the United States has to curtail its ability to go to war. There would be no reason for Obama to make such a move unless he feared that “sinister forces” are, and have, used the American military for their own gain.

There are key issues of perception. If what is said is unreported or lied about, is the press also lying about other more basis things? Are they lying about the simple issues of “who, what, when and where?”

In fact, is nothing the mainstream media reports to be believed, except sports scores and weather?

Can we even believe that?

    perhaps its true

Mr Gordon is saying (I think) that this is more than we’ve ever had said from a president. Admissions and feelings towards policies not heard from any other politician. Do you really expect him to spell out everything in details? He would be signing his own death wish if he did. It seems like you have totally forgotten that lesser ppl have been murdered for lesser truth telling. I know its hard to sit an hr listening to politicians but if you don’t listen and pay attention how can you hold them accountable much less “have a rational basis for criticism”. The second thought conveyed in the article is that the LSM will take only segments of the speech and twist it to their liking. Yes, true we don’t know if this is to buy time by giving hope but this doesn’t change the fact that more admissions were given in this speech than in the last 6 presidencies. Thanks again for a fine job and effort Mr Gordon. You are always right on target. You must listen to the end.

If I hear one more US President say that his job is “to protect the American people” I’m gonna hurl! There is not one utterance of the oath he’s sworn to that implies that. His job, as is ours and every soldier to ever don a uniform for this country is to “protect the US Constitution!” If that oath was honored, we would not be having this stupid discussion today. It is THAT goddamn simple. Peace.

    The most telling of all…
” These restrictions make no sense. After all, under President Bush, some 530 detainees were transferred from GTMO with Congress’s support… there is no justification beyond politics for Congress to prevent us from closing a facility that should never have been opened.”

It is Obama who is COMMANDER AND CHIEF of the Armed Forces, This is well known and seen in the Illegal “Undeclared” Wars of Aggression. If GITMO was to be closed, where is Obama’s Executive Order for it? GITMO is a Military base/detention center. Last year of which they ran a $40 Million dollar Optical Fiber cable to. There is no plans to close what Obama perhaps watches direct on GITMO-VISION at the White House.

Forget all the IRS and Media scandal’s and have “Holder investigate of all things… HOLDER!” From Gun Running to Mexico, Afghan drugs exports up 800% since the Taliban eradicated them in 2001. The US Government/Military is just new version of Oliver North’s running the Secret Government.

Obama should be Arrested, Tried and Convicted for his Treason!
Imagine, The same Al Qaeda who killed thousand’s of American’s with very strong HINTS to Israel. Are the same exact Al Qaeda Obama has sent nearly $500 Million in Support and who knows how much Arms, Communications and Training too. *These Chicken’s WILL come home to Roost!*

    Great Article Mr. Duff.
P.S. For those who have lost Friends/Family in these Wars.. How does it feel knowing Your President is Arming their Killers?

I could not agree more. I stand with you. Excellent entry. We all need to stand together and demand some accountability, and justice. This is our country and it is time we do something to pressure our elected to do what they should do naturally without being pressured. it is called ‘blind trust.” Preserve, protect and defend this nation from traitorous acts, deceitful betrayal. EXcellent entry!!!!

Another most excellent article in a stream of so many by Gordon Duff. It is rumored Obama has cut a conciliatory deal with an angry Putin over Syria and allowing the zios to drop a nuke their. Putin apparently has now taken serious steps to prevent this from happening again and perhaps cannot be pushed around any more. Obama has bought a big batch of helicopters from the Russians for Afghan AF perhaps as an appeasement and part of a secret agreement with Putin to let the Zionist NeoCons “go down the tubes”, that is, cut them loose.

If true, this means the neocons will be going it alone from here on out and has likely been thrown under the bus. This would mean their time of dominanting American politics and police will be coming to an end and the warmongering, parasitical, terroristic iron fist of aipac, adl, splc will be broken. And it’s like dealing with a cornered rapid dog, it will come at you with everything it has because it’s time is short and it is in a death cycle.

Thus one might expect these entities to use their captive terrorist force, the DHS, to implement some of the most vicious Gladio style false flag attacks imaginable. Some may be virtual only like Sandy Hook and Boston, but some may be real like 911 with thousands of deaths or even millions (a whole major city). It’s about time Americans wake up and understand that DHS is merely an extension of the neocon zio terror machine that has killed so many including the millions of innocent Russians murdered by the Bolsheviks of which DHS is merely an extension of. If you like the idea of Bolshevik red terror, you will love what DHS has planned for America unless disbanded and the leaders arrested and brought to justice for their massive RICO crimes, treason and sedition. Expect a lot of major changes soon during 2013.

If true Obomba has made a secret decision to turn on the neocons and make

sure they twist in the wind. Watch aipac, adl, splc squirm in their derath throws,

like wild rapid dogs that rea cornered. They may use the samson option and

try and start a nuclear ww3 but setting off nukes inside American cities.

Indian Creek, Sand Creek, Wounded knee. These most infamous massacres were just the start of Americas deliberate targeting of unarmed, disarmed none combatant civilians. This policy was continued in subsequent wars by these animated piles of Bovine excrement known by their colloquial name and more commonly referred to as Americans! Kerry formerly Cohen, I hesitated to give him the title “mister” that would suggest I consider him to be part of the human race I do NOT! This Zionist Jew Cohen is the most disgusting of creatures ever to crawl out of that latrine pit known as European Jewry! The Drone kills are quite clearly random acts of murder committed by insane psycho individuals against mainly women and children, a continuation of the vile blood lust exhibited by the Bovine excrement since the Indian wars on the continental USA. They! Americans are an abhorrent affront! repugnant to every ethical and moral code and right thinking human on the planet!

I’m so glad the genius-in-chief, after five years “on the job”, found the time to think about getting around to hinting at the possibility that maybe we should think about the possibility that the whole world hates us for all the crimes we’ve committed. Crimes that said genius-in-chief has played such a large part in executing.

Yes, Obama knows what he’s done. He also knew we’d figure it out, eventually. So now he has to give us “hope” that something will “change” while he blames Congress for all the evil bills he signed into law.

Speech translation: “Don’t shoot me, I’m only the President.”

  9. Chandler  May 26, 2013 at 8:52 am

The United Nations has a Declaration of Human Rights. The U.S. Department of State Mission Statement reads: “Advance freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community by helping to build and sustain a more democratic, secure and prosperous world composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and act responsibly within the international system.”
As they clearly state, they promote respect for human rights, hold governments accountable, promote rule of law, coordinates human rights with important allies. They profess this because, “The promotion of human rights is an important national interest…” of the United States.
All this talk of human rights by our own Department of State, I wonder why they don’t expose the new world order’s quest to overthrow the U.S government? Last time I looked, we were still human.
How much more crooked are the people within the government going to get? The new world order has only provided chaos and human tragedy. If human rights were so important why hasn’t the state department stepped up and protected the people against the tyranny of this dysfunctional organization called the new world order?
2012 Human Rights Reports states, “Human rights are quite simply the foundation for a free and open society. And history shows us that countries whose policies respect and reflect these rights are far more likely to be more peaceful and more prosperous, far more effective at tapping talents of their people…and are far better long term partners.”
Why doesn’t no birth certificate Obama respect our own state department’s mission statement?
Great article. I encourage everyone to read about the human rights we are guaranteed!!!! Ah,thenew world order is no order whatsoever. Why I call it the “new world odor.”

“In fact, is nothing the mainstream media reports to be believed, except sports scores and weather?”

I don’t follow lamestream media but I do catch glimpses of it and see conformist obsfurcation and lying in nearly all of it. In the 90’s I began bookmarking MSM sources under Zionist Media. MSM reporting on sports is heavily censored and controlled to quash negative news such as the obvious use of drugs and suspicous results fixing by referees. This censorship carries over into comments under game wrapups. The top professional leagues are so intent on maintaining their images they impose huge fines on coaches and managers for saying to the media what most of the observing fans are saying to each other.

Weather reporting is shallow, inadequate and grossly hyped. The issues of weather wars, our Air Force bragging about controlling weather, chemtrails, HAARP, etc. are underreported, debunked, ignored or lied about. .

If you put this speech together with the one he made about 6 months ago about sinister forces within the military and black-ops agencies, forces that may be picked up and taken-out of the game, it makes for an interesting shift. Especially in view on top ranking military leaders who have been replaced.

But the text and meaning is all filtered through the MSM and the message that is taken away by the public is quite different from the one intended by his actual words. When will our air-wave frequencies spectrum, be taken back and put in the public domain so we can hear what is actually said?

    • Gordon Duff  May 26, 2013 at 5:25 pm

My nagging graphic…is very much accurate…

We are being told what we need to know…and are not listening.

    • Allesandro  June 1, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Do you remember when there was all that questioning of Judge Roberts before his appointment? Everyone involved including the media were tied in knots, all tripping over themselves NOT to phrase a question or answer the wrong way so that TORTURE was NEVER admitted. The definition, and everything related to it was all twisted in some obscure logic, so that it could not be construed as torture.

      That was then.

AND NOW THIS. We have a sitting PRESIDENT stating on the record that torture was committed. WOW. That must have some far reaching legal ramifications for a lot of people and a lot of NEOCONS.

      I especially like this part:

“President Obama clearly stated that the United States and engaged in torture in direct violation of international law. No attempt was made to justify American acts nor was any attempt made to describe “waterboarding” as other than torture or attempt to mischaracterize America’s illegal acts as limited to waterboarding only.”

I’m just guessing, but there appears to be a lot here. I just read it again and it has more impact. Even if the media downplays it, the fact he stated it officially is powerful and carries legal weight.

It is not just Obama calling for AUMF to be ended, take a look at this, its both “sides” of the aisle apparently – McCain and Graham? FFS !?! Please help me understand this G!

McCain and Graham are pushing to reduce war powers originally passed in 2001….

Several senators, including McCain, Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., met privately recently to discuss revising the law. McCain indicated at the hearing Thursday that they could act on the annual defense policy bill expected this summer or produce a new resolution.
Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, summed up the frustration of many in Congress who backed the law in 2001 but now wonder whether they went too far as the nation reeled from the shock of the attacks.

“I don’t believe many, if any, of us believed when we voted for that — and I did vote for it — that we were voting for the longest war in the history of the United States and putting a stamp of approval on a war policy against terrorism that, 10 years-plus later, we’re still using,” Durbin said.

    • truthman  May 29, 2013 at 7:26 am

Bravo, maybe they want to rescind the powers because they just realized that Obama ‘could’ use the NDAA to take them all out! That was my hope and observation from it’s idiotic, insidious inception. And I suppose it could still be, but I mostly gave up on that a long time ago.

  14. PAUL LEO FASO  May 26, 2013 at 6:29 am

President Obama can shift all the false war policies around till the end of time, but any move that denies the facts surrounding 9/11, the twisted government and media roles involved in this crime against the American people will only be useless posturing. This President needs to get on with rounding up all the criminals involved in the 9/11 deception, both foreign and domestic, and pull the pin on the truth grenade.

Anything less is criminal negligence , to include aiding and abetting enemies of the State.
