Papers on U.K. Role in Israeli Nuclear Program Missing From National Archive, Reports Say

The documents are among 400 sensitive files reportedly missing since 2012 from the British national archive.

The Israeli nuclear programme has always been cloaked in secrecy, officially Israel does not acknowledge nor admit it possesses an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Several western countries have been accused of aiding Israel’s nuclear programme, including an allegation that Germany exchanged Dolphin class submarines for nuclear warheads. These missing papers probably contain information that would embarrass either Britain, Israel or both, hence  their disappearance.

Britain’s involvement in the creation of Israel’s alleged nuclear arsenal is one of the topics among more than 400 documents missing from the U.K.’s national archive, British media reported on Thursday.

The Independent cited a response to a Freedom of Information request, that important files missing include a so-called nuclear collaboration with Israel in the 1970s and a letter from Winston Churchill.

The BBC quoted an unidenfitied British lawmaker as expressing concern about the loss. It said 402 historical files were unaccounted for since January 2012.

Missing among these papers is a Foreign Office file from 1979 called “military and nuclear collaboration with Israel: Israel nuclear armament,” the BBC says.

The report says the missing file is likely related to a United Nations resolution with the same headline, about “increasing evidence” of the country’s efforts to acquire atomic weapons.

Another missing document is a letter from Winston Churchill regarding his memoirs, from October 1947, the BBC says.

The National Archives in Kew, London, contain more than 11 million official documents. Many are made available to the public after 30 years.
