[Editor’s note: Those who have followed our coverage of the US election and it’s aftermath will be fully aware of the role played by Netanyahu in getting Trump elected. Therefore we have to ask – to what extent will Netanyahu wield power and control over Trump? I think the answer is that Trump will do Netanyahu’s bidding, he will act in favour of Israel at every turn, such as scrapping the Iran nuke deal and recognising the city of Jerusalem as the legal and rightful capital of Israel. Not far short of being nothing more than an Israeli puppet. Ian]
Netanyahu: Trump is ‘a true friend’ of Israel
The Prime Minister of Israel on Wednesday applauded newly elected president of the United States Donald Trump calling him “a true friend” of Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his victory in a statement released on Wednesday.
“President-elect Trump is a true friend of the state of Israel,” Netanyahu said.
“I look forward to working with him to advance security, stability, and peace in our region,” he continued.
The Prime Minister pointed to the “shared values” between Israel and the United States and said he and Trump would “strengthen” the partnership of the two countries.
“The ironclad bond between the United States and Israel is rooted in shared values, buttressed by shared interests, and driven by a shared destiny,” Netanyahu stated.
“I am confident that president-elect Trump and I will continue to strengthen the unique alliance between our two countries and bring it to even greater heights,” he added.
While Netanyahu did not mention specific details in his statement regarding a renewed US-Israeli partnership, other members of the Israeli government did not hold back.
Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home Party, pointed to Trump’s win as an “opportunity” to end discussions of a Palestinian state.
“Trump’s victory is an opportunity for Israel to immediately retract the notion of a Palestinian state in the centre of the country,” he said referring to the occupied West Bank.
“This is the position of the president-elect…the era of a Palestinian state is over,” Bennett concluded.
Trump confirmed his victory in the 2016 race for the US Presidency after defeating Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton by 276-218 votes.
