10 Disgusting Things Joe Arpaio Did as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz.

[Editor’s note: Trump is utterly incompetent, ludicrously so. After he painted himself as a racist white supremacist in the wake of the Charlottesville fiasco, he really needed to recuperate his image and do something to try to show he isn’t a racist. Instead, he did perhaps the worst thing imaginable and pardoned the most disgusting, racist piece of scum in the entire nation, thus cementing his own image as a racist. Here is a brief rundown of just a few of the truly inhumane and evil activities that have rightly earned Joe Arpaio a richly deserved reputation as a piece of faecal matter in human form. Ian]

The Root
10 Disgusting Things Joe Arpaio Did as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz.

Recently, Sheriff Joe Arpaio was crowned some kind of racist folk hero, keeper of the Obama birther theory, and all around example of an abusive cop. So of course, our president thought him a man deserving of a pardon.

Whether you believe Trump pardoned Arpaio because he wanted to divert attention from the umpteenth staff member who was stabbed in the back quit, or if he really believes that Cotton-Eye Joe (my nickname, cuz redneck) speaks to his “base” (base paint is white, right?) Arpaio represents that type of bigot who will not be restrained by decency, humanity or the law.

But the Phoenix New Times has receipts. Lots of them. The alt-weekly has been covering the embattled sheriff for more than 20 years, and laid out a “couple of things you should know about him.” It is even worse than you thought.

1. He ran a jail he described as a “concentration camp.”

2. Prisoners in his jails died often; often without no explanation

3. An inmate who was paraplegic and asked for a catheter almost had his neck broken by one of his jailers

4. He botched hundreds of sex crimes cases of underage girls, oh and … one of his “sheriff’s posse” was indicted for child pornography

5. He marched only Latino prisoners into a segregated area with electric fencing

6. A black woman horrifically lost her baby in his jail

7. A prisoner baked to death in his cell at a temperature of 109 degrees

8. He sent a deputy to Hawaii to “look for Barack Obama’s birth certificate”

9. He was ordered to pay the Phoenix New Times co-founders $3.75 million dollars for false arrests

1o. His people killed a puppy in a botched SWAT raid.

There’s more unfortunately, including investigating the judge who found him in contempt of court, trying to destroy evidence in said investigation and spending millions of tax payer funds to settle lawsuits under his reign.

For this and so much more, Trump deemed this man who for all intents and purposes seems a lot like him (racist, clueless, bad at his job, dangerous) “worthy” of a pardon. I can think of a million other things that he’s worthy of.

  1. Sorry Ian, but although he may be a ‘citizen’ that does not qualify him for the office of President under the meaning of the 14th Amendment. The original wording stated that only those ‘natural born citizens’ were eligible for that position. Although that phrase is not elaborated on any further in the Constitution it should be read in the language of the time, where English (and before it, Roman) law understood the term to mean both parents were citizens of the country at the time of the birth. As Mr Obama Snr was an admitted Kenyan/British subject at the time of the birth that invalidates Barak’s claim.

Schneider v Rusk (1964) elaborates further:
“We start from the premise that the rights of citizenship of the native born and of the naturalized person are of the same dignity and are coextensive. The only difference drawn by the Constitution is that only the “natural born” citizen is eligible to be President. Art. II, § 1.

While the rights of citizenship of the native born derive from § 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment and the rights of the naturalized citizen derive from satisfying, free of fraud, the requirements set by Congress, the latter, apart from the exception noted, “becomes a member of the society, possessing all the rights of a native citizen, and standing, in the view of the constitution, on the footing of a native. The constitution does not authorize Congress to enlarge or abridge those rights.”

    • If all the people so obsessed with the birth certificate nonsense because they are still pissed that the black guy won put the same effort into checking Trump’s background then we wouldn’t be in the mess we are now with a career criminal sat in the Oval Office.

  2. Some truly earned the nickname of pig. Trump by the way has lifted the ban on police obtaining military gear. thanks.

  3. Regarding Obama’s qualifications, lawsuits were filed all over the country both before and after inauguration. All courts totally chickened out and ducked the issues; either the claims were premature or moot. After over 2 centuries our totally corrupt Supreme Court won’t even tell us what a Natural Born Citizen is. Hawaii is the most corrupt state in the Union. That is where the rich illegal immigrants come from with all the millions of dollars who are welcomed in California. It is and was a total joke to permit political hacks from totally corrupt political parties to sign false and unchallengeable sworn statements that any presidential candidate satisfies the Constitutional qualifications to be President. Many of the vital records about Obama have “mysteriously” disappeared from government archives. All the questions about him before he was first elected still remain totally unanswered today. He refused to divulge his college records from all schools he attended so citizens could verify his student loans and if he had lied on loan applications. This was a massive cover up at the highest levels and Arpaio was one of the few with the guts to stand up to it; all media whores sold out as usual and as expected. WND made a valiant effort though. The birth certificate he presented has been proved to be a total forgery. I am not a fan of Arpaio nor am I a fan of totally corrupt courts and media all over this country. This country is badly broken.

    • Where was Sheriff Joe when the repugs were wanting to nominate Ted Cruz? He was absolutely not eligible. His father was foreign born and his mother gave up US citizenry to live and vote in Canada…at the time of Teds’ birth. If Sheriff Joe was so adamant about the issue, where was he then…oh, yeah, Ted is part of the same gang as Joe…no problemo. Arpaio is nothing but a dictatorial wanna be with delusions of competence.

  4. 2,6,9 & 10, actually could be any town USA. Those types of things are quite frequent. I’m sure a better list of Arpaio’s ignorance is available, and it would go ten fold if the poor had access to good legal reps.
I also would like to see more coverage of the judges who made it all possible. They always use the excuse of “well that is the law” when applying tough sentences for petty crimes. It is an all to common thing for them to ignore the same rule of law, when it applies to themselves. Jails provide a multitude of financial opportunities for what is usually a connected web of contractors and suppliers. Imprisonment is a completely outdated and harmful practice for behavioral reform. The people who work there are often worse than the police, as the pay is decent, and the requirements low brow.
