The United States invaded Afghanistan largely to restore the heroin industry and it is now making about $1.5 trillion every year from this business, according to Veterans Today Editor Dr. Kevin Barrett, an American academic and political analyst.

US Army General John Nicholson, the commander of Resolute Support forces and US forces in Afghanistan, on Monday announced that American jets targeted drug producing facilities in Afghanistan for the first time under a new strategy aimed at cutting off Taliban funding.

He said that the air strikes were carried out on Sunday in the southern Helmand province, adding that Taliban militants generate about $200 million per year from poppy cultivation and opium production.

The general said that the US military carried out the raids under a new war strategy for Afghanistan announced by President Donald Trump in August.

“This latest announcement by the US military that the new strategy involves bombing drug labs is quite humorous given that the US went into Afghanistan in reality largely to protect the heroin industry,” Dr. Barrett told Press TV on Monday.

“Just as the Vietnam war was heavily driven by the fact that at that time most of the world’s heroin was coming from the Golden Triangle, today the heroin epicenter has moved with the CIA’s areas of interest to Afghanistan,” he stated.

“The Taliban had shut down opium production in Afghanistan, and it was not tolerable to the Deep State which profits to the tune of $1.5 trillion per year from the heroin industry, which is then moved in a shell-game to various banks and corporations and leveraged into vastly more money than that,” he noted.

“So they invaded Afghanistan in large part to restore the opium industry. And indeed there was zero opium being produced before the US invasion,” the academic said.

“The first thing in the first year the US did was to release all the drug lords, set them up, and tell them to plant away. Within two years, Afghanistan was setting world records every single year in opium production as US troops guarded the poppy fields and supported the creation of a number of labs which were refining the opium into heroin, which was then transported to the West in Global Hawks – US military vehicles that can fly all way around the world without refueling,” he noted.

The Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk worked on by maintainers at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia sits on the flight line June 29, 2017.

In August, Trump announced his controversial war strategy for Afghanistan. In a blatant U-turn from his campaign pledges to end the now 16-year occupation of Afghanistan, Trump said that his views had changed since entering the White House and that he would continue the military intervention “as long as we see determination and progress” in Afghanistan.

Trump authorized an increase of thousands of troops requested by General John William Nicholson, who has said he needs about 16,000 troops in Afghanistan, and NATO countries have also pledged to help make up the difference.

The United States — under Republican George W. Bush’s presidency — and its allies invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but after more than one and a half decades, the foreign troops are still deployed to the country.

After becoming president in 2008, President Barack Obama, a Democrat, vowed to end the Afghan war, but he failed to keep his promise.

Trump, who has spoken against the Afghan war, has dubbed the 2001 invasion and following occupation of Afghanistan as “Obama’s war.”

  1. Excellent article. It needs to be said.

    Afghanistan’s export industries:

Opium — 810,000 acres. 90% of world production. Untold billions of dollars. Last year it was 530,000 acres. This is a very fast growing industry.

    Uranium — zero tonnes

    Lithium — zero tonnes.

Other exports — fruits, nuts, carpets, animal hides, copper, uncut gemstones and everything else — $658 million total of everything other than opium combined, or about $15 per capita! LOL!

The Lithium and etc. is just a smokescreen. The only game in Afghanistan is Opium. Two thirds of the world’s consumption is in the US.

  2. How does heroin rank with the other factors of rare earth element extraction at below market value, military bases closer to Russia, gas pipelines, and general war profiteering for justifying the conquest of Afghanistan?

    • There’s nothing else. They are not extracting one spoonful of Lithium and have not built one inch of gas pipeline.

  3. Mr Brownstone climbs into your brain and makes a nest right next to the decision council. Once on his pulpit, he takes over as many critical functions as possible and constantly yells for more. It is insidious to even suggest that we would damage Afghani’s ability to sustain themselves if we chop the poppies. Crimes against Humanity is the notch above War Crimes. Damn the pusher man.

  4. My late departed uncle, a Sufi shaikh in Karachi Pakistan stated back then that the invasion is for the opium trade. The quality of the crops is enhanced by all the mineral-rich streams from the mountain ranges.

  5. The US military, after 911, didn’t know were OBL was, but lets bomb the shit out of the country anyway. How many military committing suicide each day, 22? All for Israel.
Also, a picture of a Global Hawk shown, the most likely ac that hit the Pentagon, The GH flies above civilian radar, no one could find it even though they where looking for it, wasn’t till it dropped below the limit of civilian radar, and spiraled perfectly down towards the Pentagon. it has a small engine like what was found at the Pentagon, also has landing gear, also found at the Pentagon, a blue tarp covering a long object was carried out of the pentagon, was this the airframe of the GH, or remains of the missile most people think hit the pentagon, fired by an Israeli sub.

  6. Any American soldier serving in Afghanistan deserves neither respect nor thank you.
I am ashamed of the U.S. military. I do not support the troops nor will I thank them for their service.
The U.S. military has become an army of thugs. Overpaid thugs at that.
Parents: do not allow any of your children to enlist into this criminal organization. Do not allow them to be brainwashed into being a corrupted and immoral soldier for the deep state. Do not allow them to become murderers of innocent men, women and children.
The u>S. military is only for those with no morality or integrity.

    • This is very true, I’ve always wondered how I could alert young people to the disgusting nature of our war involvements. Try placing comments with anti-war thrust in various publications. See how you are attacked by the shills. My state paper is very famous for supporting wars and supported the last disgusting Democratic presidents who satisfied their war lust using opinions and columns that recommended that we win one for the Gipper. Just one more war, then another. If we can convince young people that enlisting is a disgusting act of cowardice, we can win this battle. But, dumbed down young people are hard to point in the right direction. Their often empty lives are satiated by putting on a uniform and taking on a tough-guy attitude. Kill, kill, kill, Drill Sergeant. And, it all starts with their being dumbed down with no powers of analysis, a product of a terrible education that teaches kids what to think, not how to think. This must stop. If it does, we have a good chance to stop this insanity in a reasonable time period. Stupidity starts in the schools and it proliferates producing me-too followers. Betsy deVos, where are you?

    • Betsy Prinz-Devos is a joke. She and her little brother Eric “the Evil” Prinz created Black Water. She married into the DeVos family for the money. Later took control of the Michigan GOP and then wormed her way up the ladder.
I lived in the Grand Rapids area for seventeen years and the Devos’s and Van Andels own that town. The Prinz family owns most of down town Holland, MI. They have their own agenda: far right christian fundamentalist extremism.
VT did a bit of an expose on dear little Betsy last year.
Now Betsy De Vos is head of the Dept. of Edumacation.
