On December 10, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah launched a military operation in order to clear the desert area in eastern Syria from ISIS. According to pro-government sources, the SAA and Hezbollah liberated about 2,000 km in the area between the T2 pumping station and the city of al-Mayadin during the first day of the operation.

The US-led coalition believes that about 3,000 ISIS members remains in Iraq. If this is true, a notable part of them should hide in the Syrian desert. The liberation of this area will be an important part of the preparations for future anti-terrorist operations of the Iranian-Russian-Syrian alliance in Syria.

Recently, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) also resumed their efforts to take control over the border with Iraq sparking clashes with ISIS. According to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq, members of ISIS captured three positions from the SDF around the village of Hawi Abu Hamam as well as killed 14 members of the SDF and destroyed a Humvee and another vehicle of the SDF. Amaq also claimed that a SDF member was killed by an IED and two others by ISIS snipers south of the Omar oil fields.

ISIS was forced to intensify its operations against the US-backed forces because its members had been locked in the Syrian border area as a result of an advance of the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Units on the Iraqi side of the border.

On December 10, the SAA and the National Defense Forces liberated the village of Zafaria, Tell Boulus, Umm Turaykiyah, Rujm al-Ahmar, Shutayb, Mushayrifah and al-Hawiyah from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) in northeastern Hama. Thus, government troops deployed near the important village of Abu Dali, which is described as a mid-term goal of the SAA advance against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the area.

According to pro-government sources, the Tiger Forces and their commander General Suheil al-Hassan will be the main striking force of the operation. Recently, Al-Hasan was spotted in the town of Khanassir.

Pro-HTS sources report multiple air and artillery strikes on positions of HTS across the entire area west of the Khanassir highway.

On December 8, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced said the situation in Idlib remains “complex” and Iran, Turkey, Russia and Syria are working to launch a de-escalation zone and added “there are no plans with the United States on this specific region” because they would be “counterproductive”. The statement indicates that nobody will take into account opinion of Washington about the so-called moderate rebels if the Syrian-Iranian-Rusian alliance launches a large-scale operation against HTS.

On December 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Russian military airbase of Khmeimim in the province of Latakia and ordered the start of the withdrawall of Russian troops from the country. The president added that if terrorists gain upper hand in the country, Russia will carry out strikes that “they’ve never seen.”

  1. This untimely withdrawal of critical Russian air support in Syria comes as Israel gears up for war against Lebanon. Putin hopes to pressure Assad into a compromise with US backed “rebels” and the Israeli owned Kurds. If Assad cedes to this, Syria is finished and likely, so is Assad. Putin says ‘its not my problem’. Putin might be the first to admit he is not Assad’s saviour. I question whether, in the wake of the withdrawal, Putin (Netanyahu’s buddy) has implicitly given Israel carte blanche to rain hell on Syrian assets, whenever it sees fit. At any rate, we can expect the tempo of Israeli strikes in Syria to increase almost immediately and with plenty of US support to boot. In the end, Putin’s so-called victory over ISIS will prove worthless.

  2. I forgot to make a declare.
Several days ago i heard on TV news that some countries tried to undervalue the Victory in Syria. It reminds me some of the EU countries after WW2.
    1. USA – sorry. 1 point for high-precision strike at a bulldozer. Zero for 11 months circus in Raqqa. Spoilers.
    2. France – you dare smth to say!? Like in WW2 betrayed Poland and capitulated under Hitler for 1 month. Both Polish and French battalions then came to USSR as Hitlers satellites. Remind you who of the capitulated German high-rank general wondered when stood near marshal Zhukov and British-USA generals and saw the French: and these…. French ones… are victors, too? Sorry – i haven’t seen you in Syria. I even haven’t heard about smth in France on TV during several months. Are you alive there? Or i soon will forget where you are at the political map. Keep on catching the frogs!
    3. Britain? What was your input to Syrian Victory? Bla-bla-bla? Where is your army? We know – you have no army. You are intrigue state! The British Lion is dead and smells rotten.
    4. Germany. There was your voice, too. Germany…. Just don’t make me laugh!

The Victory was made by ME countries, Syrian people and Russia.

  3. Well informed sources have said the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp Brigadier General Haj Qassem Soleimani sent a verbal letter, via Russia, to the head of the US forces commander in Syria, advising him to pull out all US forces to the last soldier “or the doors of hell will open up”.
“My message to the US military command: when the battle against ISIS (the Islamic State group) will end, no American soldier will be tolerated in Syria.

I advise you to leave by your own will or you will be forced to it”, said Soleimani to a Russian officer. Soleimani asked the Russian responsible to expose the Iranian intentions towards the US: that they will be considered as forces of occupation if these decide to stay in north-east Syria where Kurds and Arab tribes cohabit together.
The Russians are not against the US presence and can adapt to this after defining the demarcation lines to avoid any clash. But Iran has a clear position and has decided not to abandon the Syrian President alone to face the US forces, if these stay behind.
Soleimani’s letter to the US clearly indicated the promise of ‘surprise measures’ against the US: ” You shall face soldiers and forces you have not experienced before in Syria and you will leave the country sooner or later”.
Russia conveyed to the US that Iran will stay in Syria as long as President Assad decides, he who insists in liberating the entire territory from all forces without exception. Russia confirmed to the US its intention to refrain from offering any air support to Iran and its allies in the case of attacks on US forces. From the Russian perspective, the Iran-US dispute is not its concern nor on its agenda.
Mike Pompeo, the US central Agency Director, said last week that he had sent a letter to Soleimani expressing his concern about Iran’s intention to attack American interests and “will hold Soleimani and Iran accountable for any attack in Iraq”.
Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, a senior aid to the Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confirmed Pompeo’s attempt to send a letter but said “Soleimani refused to read it or to take it because he has nothing further to add”.

Sources in the area believe it is not unlikely that Kurdish groups – operating in al-Hasaka and who are faithful to the government of Damascus – are willing to be spearheaded against the US forces. Many of these groups remained loyal to Syria: they reject any occupation forces on its land or the partition of the country.
Al-Hasaka 2018 is being widely referred to, those 1983 events where hundreds of US Marines and French paratroopers were killed following double suicide attacks by Islamist in Beirut. The multinational forces became hostile rather than peacekeepers and were pushed to leave Lebanon in a rush as a consequence of this attack. The future could well mirror these past events.

    • US presence there in Syria became poor and humiliated. They now are like a little dumb kid, that rushes between the legs of mature men. No one pays attention. Yes, Russia doesn’t mind US presence. This problem may be solved by Iran – they have nothing to loose and they have a tooth on USA. We fulfilled the main task – break the horde of terrorism, saved Syria as a state, united key players in the ME. But if smth. goes wrong we may return very quickly.
Putin had a hard day today: 1 hour in Syria, Egypt, Turkey. There are many more things yet to be done. But the main forces return home. Pilots miss their families. 7000 battle flights – it isn’t a joke. They are the musicians of military Art. Time to rest and meet New Year. But keep an eye on our western partners inside and around Syria.

    • “…he who insists in liberating the entire territory from all forces without exception.”

Does that include liberating the Syrian Golan Heights from Israeli occupation?

  4. Putin calls for withdrawal of forces. Meanwhile, the real terrorist entity comprising of illegal US government fores, ensconced in fortified military bases inside Syria remain to undo Putin’s erstwhile victory over ISIS.

  5. Following the progress that the Yemeni army made supported by popular resistance in Hodeidah, navigational sources in the port of Hodeidah revealed that Tehran vacated 40 military advisers from the area along with UN workers in Yemen.
Prior to this, Tehran had evacuated its embassy employees from Sanaa following the intense battles between Houthi militias and the General People’s Congress Party (GPC) forces in the Yemeni capital last week.
Meanwhile, Houthi militias are still being clamped down in the west coast of Yemen, with national army and coalition forces fast approaching the city of Hodeidah.
The evacuation of Iranian advisers along with UN workers took place three days ago through the Hodeidah port which is controlled by the militia.
Sources at the port confirmed that the operation was done very discretely so as not to attract any attention.
More notably, the decision to evacuate the Iranian advisers closely followed the killing of Iranian missile expert Hussein Khasrawy, who was killed on Saturday in a coalition raid in Sanaa.
Media sources said that the embassy employees were evacuated from Sanaa to Muscat, after the embassy building was exposed to an air raid during a battle between the Houthis and GPC forces last week.
