The eCommerce market is booming, with global sales projected to be somewhere around $653 billion by the end of the year, an amount that is more than double what it was just five short years ago. This factor alone makes eCommerce very appealing to many, but for veterans specifically, it’s often the perfect match.

According to research published in Advances in Medical Education and Practice, military veterans face some unique challenges when they return home as a civilian.

One of the most well-known is post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It’s not uncommon for individuals with this condition to not want to spend a lot of one-on-one time with others, so having an eCommerce business enables the vet to work primarily alone, yet still earn a decent income.

Depression is another major issue for military vets, with 14 percent struggling with this mental health condition at any given time. Developing a clearer sense of purpose and providing value to others can often help ease these feelings of sadness and an eCommerce business does both, while also providing a constructive use of time.

For veterans in chronic pain or those who’ve had amputations as a result of their service, finding an outside job may be more difficult. However, by starting their own business, they’re able to set their own hours and work in a manner that is best for them. If they need regular breaks, they can take them. Or if they have doctor’s appointments, they don’t have to request time off.

There are many do-it-yourself options—with Shopify, Wix, and BigCommerce being three of the highest reviewed website builders—or you can hire this out. Either way, the goal is to create a site that is consumer friendly, easy to use, has appealing pictures of your products, and provides a simple checkout process.

With everything in place, it’s time to market your eCommerce goods. Being active on social media helps, as does creating a blog that provides your consumer valuable tips about how to get the most out of the products you sell. Offering promotions works well too because, who doesn’t love a good deal?

eCommerce is a perfect fit for Veterans, both physically and mentally, and it’s a business that is fairly easy to get started. All you have to do is decide what you want to sell, create a site, and then begin to get the word out. Do these three things and you’re on the right path.
