Trump Lying: No increased Iran threat in Syria or Iraq, top British officer says

Deputy commander of anti-Isis coalition rebuts White House justification for sending troops

The top British general in the US-led coalition against Isis has said there is no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq or Syria, directly contradicting US assertions used to justify a military buildup in the region.

Hours later however, his assessment was disowned by US Central Command in an extraordinary rebuke of an allied senior officer. A spokesman insisted that the troops in Iraq and Syria were on a high level of alert due to the alleged Iranian threat.

Maj Gen Christopher Ghika, who is a deputy commander of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the coalition conducting counter-terrorist operations against Isis in Iraq and Syria, was repeatedly questioned by reporters about the threat from Shia militias in Syria and Iraq, cited by US officials over the past week as justification for speeding up the deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group in the Gulf and for sending B-52 Stratofortress bombers and an anti-aircraft battery to the region.

“No – there’s been no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria,” Ghika said in a videolink briefing from Baghdad to the Pentagon. “We’re aware of that presence, clearly. And we monitor them along with a whole range of others because that’s the environment we’re in.

  1. I am always open to finding an actual British ally. However, on this point , I wait to see if he is controlled opposition. The trust level isn’t there to take it at face value. You know how it is when guys take turns. And we all know how it is to hope and be disappointed. Anyways, the focus should be getting through august.
Good time to review the military blunders since Trump took office. Accident rates, MOAB, Yemen Osprey , Warmbier payment, Venezuela coup fail, media blackouts, etc., it all seems to just follow his MO. Con and be found out.
    What a bunch of jerks.

  2. Every US president job in office involves lying on Middle East affairs. And most of (NATO) Nor.Am. and Europe buy those lies. That will be so until countries around world stop signing non-extradition treaties with US Wehrmacht.

  3. With this fishy oil tanker sabotage story, the deployment of the carrier group, and the B-52’s…, Trump, Bolton, Pompeo, and their band of neocon maniacs are pushing hard for this war with Iran. I salute this British General Officer for having the integrity to speak the truth, and I hope it resonates if this aggression based on phony intelligence goes forward. Big shout out to Spain for their frigate bugging out from this sham!
