Strange Creatures Found Lurking in the Dark Below Antarctica’s Ice

by Sputniknews.com

Despite the extreme temperatures, the waters surrounding the continent at the South Pole are far from deserted, as lifeforms there are varied and include, for example, three-metre-long “invisible” predatory worms. One kind of below-the-ice creature has especially stunned the makers of a new BBC documentary.

An unusual creature has been filmed by the crew of a new series on Antarctica with its diverse and quirky wildlife, featuring TV star David Attenborough, who has exposed the various forms of life there.

The show’s creators set their cameras below the ice to shed light on the inhabitants of the Southern Ocean, which is swarming with life despite the harsh conditions above the ice, where temperatures fall far below zero.

According to famous naturalist Attenborough, “the frozen surface at sea hides a great secret”, as although the conditions are hostile above, the situation is more stable underneath the ice sheet, so the “life over millennia has had time to diversify”. One of the inhabitants of the unfriendly dark is a gigantic worm, invisible to the human eye. Only by using special equipment has the creature been brought into the spotlight.

“Creatures here grow to great sizes like predatory nemertean worms – three metres long. They only become visible when the cameras are sped up and we’re only now able to discover the details of the lives of such strange creatures”, Attenborough explained.

However, another creature captured the presenter’s imagination even more. So-called nudibranchs compensate for their poor sight by having both female and male reproductive organs, which makes breeding easier for them.

“So, to mate, one nudibranch just needs to find another nudibranch and anyone will do. But this is a challenge when their tiny eyes can barely see. Some do get lucky, though, these two are fertilising each other and both will produce young. When it’s hard to find a partner it pays not to have to worry about your gender”, he said.

  1. Antarctica was discovered on January 16 (28), 1820 by a Russian expedition led by Faddei Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, who approached Antarctica on the sloops “Vostok” and “Mirny”.
Next year we will celebrate the 200th anniversary. In fact, there is nothing mysterious there. It’s just that the territory is poorly studied. By the way, the international treaty between the USSR and the USA on the development and non-militarization of Antarctica is the only treaty that is strictly implemented and is fundamental for all countries – for those who would like to divide Antarctica into zones and sectors of influence. Nobody extracts anything there. It is forbidden.

    • You are forgetting two things, blackened moon rocks were cleaned up and taken back to Nasa by Von Braun back in 1966, and from the US Nuclear site (1963-72), gravel was dug up for years and supposedly sent back to the states.

  2. Why are certain areas of Antarctica remain off limits? I listened to an interview of Linda Moulten Howe with a former U.S. navy officer concerning that bit of real estate. Very interesting.
A strange anomaly has been discovered just to the north west of Isle Royale at the bottom of Lake Superior . Weird.

  3. Some interesting items located in the shallow waters of Mcmurdo Sounds Antarctica, where black rocks, rocks that were blasted of the moons surface and sent thru the earths atmosphere to land in the sounds. These were gathered up by Von Braun in 1966 and taken back to the states, to be used for evidence that we brought back moon rocks from the moon. LMFGAO

  4. The fauna is wide and wonderful. One of my friends served as military deep diver in the Barentsev Sea. North of Russia. He said that nothern seas and ocean – there are much more different creatures living in the cold waters, than in the warm seas. I didn’t know that.

    • Andy, Maybe the idea of the Loch Ness monster isn’t so far fetched after all.
      or Big Foot/Sasquatch.
      Or Skin walkers.
So many things we think we know ans yet remain so ignorant.
