Putin and Merkel screw up Netanyahu’s Iran plan

Both Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel obviously know that Benjamin has been running like a wild animal saying crazy things about the Iran nuclear deal. The mad man in Tel Aviv has said ad nauseam that the nuclear deal is based on lies. “Iran did not come clean on its nuclear program,” Netanyahu declared two years ago. “The deal is based on lies.”[1]

Netanyahu, like Wile E. Coyote of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons, invented his own picture of a nuclear Iran and expected everyone to believe him. Back in 2018, Netanyahu went to work in order to prove that the Iran deal is based on lies. In order to do that, Netanyahu had to invent his own lies: “Atomic Archive: Iran’s Nuclear Files.” Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister, responded then by saying: “BREAKING: The boy who can’t stop crying wolf is at it again. Undeterred by cartoon fiasco at UNGA. You can only fool some of the people so many times.”[2]

This is Netanyahu at his best: “After signing the nuclear deal in 2015, Iran intensified its efforts to hide its secret files. In 2017 Iran moved its nuclear weapons files to a highly secret location in Tehran.”[3] Netanyahu’s “documents” show that Iran’s nuclear plant was “designed from the get go for nuclear weapons for project Amad.”[4] Netanyahu continued:

“Iran lied about never having a secret nuclear program. Secondly, even after the deal, it continued to expand its nuclear program for future use. Thirdly, Iran lied by not coming clean to the IAEA. The nuclear deal is based on lies based on Iranian deception.”[5]

Who has the capability to decipher the “documents” that Netanyahu put on one beautiful slide after another? Only Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet and no one else. In fact, not a serious intelligence agency has fully agreed with his crazy idea. The only person who applauded Netanyahu was Donald Trump:

“U.S. President Donald Trump, who spoke publicly 30 minutes after Netanyahu’s speech, said that Netanyahu’s speech ‘showed that I was 100% right’ in criticizing the nuclear deal.

“Prior to Netanyahu’s conference, Trump spoke with Netanyahu over the phone on Sunday to discuss the current situation in the Middle East, the White House said. The reach out of their phone conversation stated that they ‘discussed the continuing threats and challenges facing the Middle East region, especially the problems posed by the Iranian regime’s destabilizing activities.’”[6]

Trump declared: “In seven years that deal will have expired and Iran is free to go ahead and develop nuclear weapons. Seven years is tomorrow. I am not saying what I am doing, (but) it’s a horrible agreement.”[7] One White House official declared then:

“This information provides new and compelling details about Iran’s efforts to develop missile-deliverable nuclear weapons. These facts are consistent with what the United States has long known: Iran has a robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program that it has tried and failed to hide from the world and from its own people. The Iranian regime has shown it will use destructive weapons against its neighbors and others.  Iran must never have nuclear weapons.”[8]

The interesting thing is that “Netanyahu spoke on the phone this evening with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the information he revealed concerning Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”[9] Netanyahu was just getting started. “Even after the deal was made,” he opined, “Iran continued to preserve and expand its nuclear know-how for use at a later date.”[10]

So the death of the General Qassem Soleimani is the culmination of what Israel has been saying for years. Netanyahu again declared back in 2018, when the deal was taking place: “This is a terrible deal. In a few days time, President Trump will make his decision. … I am sure he will do the right thing, the right thing for the United States, the right thing for Israel and the right thing for peace in the world.”[11]

But both Merkel and Putin have obviously rejected Netanyahu’s risible proposal by agreeing that the Iran nuclear deal stands! Merkel declared that “everything must be done to keep the JCPOA going.” She will do everything in her power to use “all the diplomatic tools to help this agreement.” In a similar vein, Putin said: “It is not perfect but it is still an agreement and it involves responsibilities for all the parties involved. And we want to keep it.”[12]

Keeping the Iran deal means Benjamin Netanyahu needs to take a back seat. Merkel in particular must have had enough of Netanyahu’s perpetual lies. As the Times of Israel itself put it back in 2018:

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a decision by the United States to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal could plunge the Middle East into war.

“During their January meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, the German leader told the Israeli premier that an American withdrawal would also split the West, pitting the US and Israel against Germany, France, and the UK, along with Russia, China, and Iran, according to Israel’s Channel 10 news. ‘Do you want that to happen?’ she was quoting as asking Netanyahu. January 24, 2018. (Amos Ben Gershon/ GPO). Merkel also told the prime minister that Germany, the UK, and France will object to making any significant changes to the 2015 accord.”[13]

A nuclear Iran, said Netanyahu, will “endanger the entire world,”[14] but much of the world doesn’t give a damn about what the mad man in Tel Aviv is saying now because serious politicians know that this man is a pathological liar. Let us hope that both Merkel and Putin continue to give the mad man in Tel Aviv some carrots and slowly kick him off the political stage.
