Trump’s COVID Plan: ‘Let Coronavirus wash over the country’ (and it’s working nicely)

Daily Beast: “In a conversation with Dr. Anthony Fauci last month, President Trump questioned why health officials couldn’t simply let the coronavirus pandemic “wash over the country,” according to The Washington Post

In his desire to reopen the country as soon as possible, Trump reportedly wanted to know why the United States could not simply decline to take countermeasures against COVID-19, with an aim of reaching a critical mass of immunity faster. Fauci, reportedly aghast, said, ‘Mr. president, many people will die.’ Public health experts agree that if the coronavirus is not containedhundreds of thousands will die.”

Guardian.co.uk: Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, which he once dismissed as a hoax, has been fiercely criticised at home as woefully inadequate to the point of irresponsibility.

Yet also thanks largely to Trump, a parallel disaster is unfolding across the world: the ruination of America’s reputation as a safe, trustworthy, competent international leader and partner.

Call it the Trump double-whammy. Diplomatically speaking, the US is on life support.

The Trump administration’s self-centred, haphazard, and tone-deaf response [to Covid-19] will end up costing Americans trillions of dollars and thousands of otherwise preventable deaths,” wrote Stephen Walt, professor of international relations at Harvard.

‘But that’s not the only damage the United States will suffer. Far from ‘making America great again’, this epic policy failure will further tarnish [its] reputation as a country that knows how to do things effectively.’

This adverse shift could be permanent, Walt warned. Since taking office in 2017, Trump has insulted America’s friends, undermined multilateral alliances and chosen confrontation over cooperation. Sanctions, embargoes and boycotts aimed at China, Iran and Europe have been globally divisive.

But Trump’s ineptitude and dishonesty in handling the pandemic, which has left foreign observers as well as Americans gasping in disbelief, is proving a bridge too far.

Erratic behaviour, tolerated in the past, is now seen as downright dangerous. It’s long been plain, at least to many in Europe, that Trump could not be trusted. Now he is seen as a threat. It is not just about failed leadership. It’s about openly hostile, reckless actions.”

  1. Ian, with all due respect, while the farcical and criminal response of the US government to this pandemic is notable, it is greatly surpassed by a far more sinister aspect of the calamity: who are the murdering psychopaths that released it? While they remain alive and free to play their insidious hand, no one is safe. VT editors are harping about the holes in the fire fighting hose. Meanwhile, there’s an arsonist running free among us.

  2. I agree 100% Ian, I am being required to reuse masks that can hold the virus for 7 days on the outside. In order to comply with best PPE standards we healthcare providers have been taught. I must sterilize them with a hydrogen peroxide solution or like a coworker who has his own ultraviolet light sterilization process, purchase my own light sterilizer. I must bring in my own sewn mask covers enough to change with every infectious patient encounter and wash those daily. As healthcare workers we are being told to break protocol and risk cross-contaminating our patients. This leaves us guilty of doing harm, the antithesis of the oath we take. If we get any more busy I will be forced to make an excruciating decision, my livelihood or that of my patients’. With the inadequacy in testing we are forced to waste PPE on uninflected patients or follow new management standards of using inadequate PPE. There was enough time to prepare for what we were told about this virus and what was obviously coming. This has all appearances of a planned PPE and testing crisis. The most elementary precautions for a known potential pandemic were completely ignored. Completely unbelievable.
But who could anticipate kerosene from two jetliners could dustify 80 floors of two skyscrapers and drop three in their footprints. The Easter bunny must have brought himself back from the dead.

  3. no problem with asking the question. The problem comes when hearing the consequences, deciding they are acceptable and progressing with the minimum-effort plan.

I can’t believe I’m reading this vacuous talking point reprinted on VT; the same VT that has been saying for years that the American government is nothing but a bunch of middle level managers for an international crime cabal. Did the folks in Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, and the Donbass get this memo?
I’m still waiting for the great Dr. Fauci to even mention the word “bioweapon”.
For as much as VT’s disdain for Trump, why was letting it wash over the country in order to secure first wave immunity so horrific? We know from earlier pandemics(leaving the engineered bioweapon question aside) that they happen in waves, the second usually far more fatal than the first.

    • Did you hit your head or something? Wake up, the US has passed Italy for virus deaths now and is losing people at the rate of over 2000 per day. The US handling of this pandemic is farcical and downright criminal, so many more people are going to die than if you had a government that wasn’t composed of traitorous criminals.

    • Trumps plan to let the virus wash over the country would be far superior to the present plan of letting unemployment and bankruptcy wash over the country. The reason for choosing the unemployment and bankruptcy plan was to protect the health care workers from having to work over time. Many more will die from unemployment and bankruptcy that will ever die of this flu.
