Iran ready for strategic partnership with Iraq

…from PressTV, Tehran

[ Editor’s Note: I am growing more suspicious that US policy might actually be to drive Iran and Iraq closer together to have a more credible threat to justify the US continued occupation of Iraq.

Somewhere in the pre-execution analysis of the danger of the Soleimani assassination, there must be at least a line item that it would force Iran and Iraq to cooperate on a much deeper level, which would have to include potential combat with a US refusing to leave Iraq, which is its position now.

It has Iraq somewhat over a barrel with the US Fed holding the Iraqi oil sales dollar reserves, rendering it a de facto colony in that regard. But as with all former colonies, such exploitation breeds never ending resentment which eventually bubbles over.

As Saudi Arabia’s finances crash, its mischief making enthusiasm in the region will wane, as will the Crown Prince’s support. His continued repression of any and all dissent will just speed that along. Watch for the military to eventually take him down when they feel they have enough support internally to do so.

Iraq has to admire Iran’s having withstood the pummeling it has gotten from the US sanctions while maintaining and even expanding its defensive capacity. The US’ only response so far is more sanctions, a clear sign of a bankrupt former world leader that views force as its ultimate tool of persuasion.

The Iraqis are not sitting on their behinds. They have launched a Syrian border area clearing of ISIS-US forces to forestall the US plan to crank ISIS back up to full operational capacity to tie up the Iraqi military in defensive operations.

Iraq has remained quiet of any demands to reassert control over its airspace, leaving the US with full capacity to move forces around at will, with no clearance required from Baghdad, a typical colonizer treatment of a colony.

This situation cannot last forever. The trick will be to find a miracle solution absent of full scale war there, to the best of Iraq’s potential anyway Jim W. Dean ]

The US inspired Iraq riots did not consume the country as planned

– First published … May 17, 2020

Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami has voiced Iran’s willingness to forge a strategic partnership with neighboring Iraq and turn bilateral ties into a “successful model for cooperation.”

Hatami made the comments on Sunday during a video call with his Iraqi counterpart, Lieutenant General Juma Anad Saadoun Khattab, who was recently appointed to the post by new Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

Hatamai underlined the need for defense cooperation between Baghdad and Tehran to restore security and stability in the region.

“We are willing to offer all our potential to Iraq and become strategic partners and turn our bonds into a successful model of cooperation,” he said.

Iran has maintained close ties with Iraq since the ouster of former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.

In 2014, when Daesh unleashed its campaign of terror in Iraq, Iranian military advisers rushed to the aid of Iraqi armed forces on Baghdad’s request, helping them reverse Daesh’s gains and ultimately liberate their entire homeland from the Takfiri terrorist group some three years later.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Hatami congratulated the Iraqi defense minister on his appointment and wished him success in his career.

He also expressed his satisfaction with the formation of the new Iraqi administration, saying, “A united, independent and powerful Iraq, with the participation of all ethnic and religious groups, is our principled policy.”

“Therefore, we hope that the Iraqi government will be successful in fulfilling its inherent responsibilities and duties, especially in materializing national demands, improving economic conditions and fighting the coronavirus disease.”

Hatami also touched on the common history, culture and religion of the two neighbors, and extended an invitation to his Iraqi counterpart for an official visit to the Islamic Republic.

Iraq swore in al-Kadhimi as the new prime minister earlier this month after months of political deadlock that had hampered the country’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic and stepped-up Daesh operations.

The United States is strongly opposed to close relations between Iran and Iraq, pressuring Baghdad to keep Tehran at an arm’s length. However, Washington’s efforts have been trumped by the extent and depth of the relationship between Tehran and Baghdad.

Iraq’s former electricity minister said this week that Iran will remain a key source of energy for the Arab country for years to come despite the US opposition.

“The only available option we have at the moment right now is Iran—and let’s be frank,” Luay al-Khatteeb said in an interview.

The US has been enlisting its companies and allies such as Saudi Arabia to replace Iran as Iraq’s source of energy.

  1. US is it’s own worst enemy, through its bullying policies, maintaining an army of ISIS terrorists to destroy ME, but wait there’s more, the unshakable love of the venomous Zionist which are the cause of all unrest in the world – not just the region.. what do you expect – to be loved? Top-down or down-up whichever way you look USG (not People) stinks.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see how freely the US will be using Iraqi airspace after they eventually acquire the Russian S400 Units.

    • What good would a S400 system be if the Russians would not let Iraq use it against Israeli, Turkish, and US aircraft (e.g., S300 in Syria)?

That is why the region needs a state of the art system manufactured by Iran.
