CNN: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to second-degree murder in George Floyd’s killing and also charging the other three officers involved in the incident, according to a tweet from US Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Ellison’s official announcement is expected to come Wednesday afternoon, more than a week after Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests that call for the end to police violence against black citizens.

Chauvin, who had his knee pressed into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, had previously been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Officers Thomas Lane and J.A. Keung, who helped restrain Floyd, and a fourth officer, Tou Thao, who stood near the others, were not initially charged.

Two autopsies on Floyd determined that he died by homicide. Minneapolis Police chief Medaria Arradondo fired the four officers and said they were “complicit” in Floyd’s death. Floyd’s family and protesters nationwide have called for them to be arrested and convicted for the killing.

  1. The whole business of Floyd’s murder seems very fishy to me. It was so calculated, so in your face, no effort to conceal what was being done. On the contrary it was filmed from start to finish and immediately publicized. The police made no effort to stop the filming, rather as though they were expecting it to be filmed. The “First Responders”, so called, when they came, made no effort to revive Floyd, just as though they had been told to go and pick up a body. They handled him like a sack of potatoes. They looked more like policemen than first responders.

So what to make of this? Who benefits? I think the most obvious conclusion is that this was deliberate and was designed by the PTB to stir up racial hate. Why would they want to do that? Again the obvious reason for that is as a means of dividing the working class, (which includes the police) at a time when there is a particularly strong set of reasons for the working class to unite, namely the present and rapidly growing unemployment and consequent poverty, the wave of coming evictions for the consequent non-payment of rent and mortgages and the lack of money by many, even for food. While some (by no means all) of the working class have received $1200 cheques, many have not while, at the same time, the Ultra-rich have been bailed out to the tune of $6 trillion! So long as Blacks, Browns, Whites and others are all fighting each other the Uber-rich are relatively safe. Racial hate is easy to stir up in the US and has a long history. It has served the PTB well and may again in this instance. The “collateral damage” to the small shopkeepers will hardly touch the wallets of the rich, never mind the hydraulic pumps the call their hearts.
